BACKGROUND: In view of the considerable changes that have taken place in the last 20 years in the clinical picture of celiac disease, epidemiological research is now underway to search for atypical forms, which are appearing with growing frequency; if not treated, they cause a deterioration in the quality of life of these patients. The goal of our research was to identify the frequency of occurrence of celiac disease among the parents of children with the disease and to analyze the clinical picture in these cases...

Over a period of 4 years (January 1993-December 1997), 509 patients were treated for abdominal colic with or without intestinal obstruction and a history of passage of adult roundworms either in the stool or in vomitus. All patients were below the age of 10 years, the youngest 6 months old, and were treated successfully with antispasmodics and normal saline enemas. When the pain subsided, an anthelminthic drug was given. Of 209 patients admitted to the hospital, 105 responded to conservative management and 104 (50%) required surgical intervention...

Oligosaccharides are widely distributed in higher plants, especially leguminous seeds. This review described the structure of galactooligosaccharides, fructooligosaccharides and raffinose-type oligosacchariddes. Flatulance--causes, relation to diet and composition of intenstinal gas are discussed. Emphasis is placed upon the fact that ingestion of oligosaccharides increases the bifidobacteria population in the colon, which in turn contributes to human health in many ways.

This report describes a 9-year-old boy with intermediate variant type of giant lymph node hyperplasia or Castleman's disease (CD) originating from the mesentery. He had symptoms and signs related to the disease for seven years before the final diagnosis. The patient's general condition remained good, except for periods of fever and abdominal pain. Pallor and slow growth were the only abnormal findings on physical examination during the follow-up. Laboratory measurements showed worsening microcytic anemia, low serum iron level, and low iron stores in bone marrow samples...

The regulation of salt absorption in the sea water eel intestine was studied by evaluating the effects of theophylline, 8 Br cyclic adenosine monophosphate, 8 Br cyclic guanosine monophosphate, atriopeptin III, porcine vasoactive intestinal peptide and prostaglandin E1 on the short-circuit current, the transepithelial voltage difference and conductance and on the dilution potentials. It was shown that theophylline increased the transepithelial conductance and reduced the magnitude of the dilution potentials, indicating that the drug increases the anion conductance of the tight junctions...

Because of the high uptake of polyamines by the prostate and by prostate derived tumors, polyamines have been considered as potential imaging agents for metastatic prostate cancer. We now report the successful PET imaging of the Dunning R3327H prostatic carcinoma with N-(3-[18F]fluoropropyl)putrescine (FPP), a positron-labeled putrescine analog. Additionally, the biodistribution of FPP in tumor bearing Copenhagen male rats is analyzed. The tumor uptake of FPP was high, and the tumor-to-muscle ratios at 1, 2, 3 and 4...

In the small intestine mucosa of 24 gnotobiotical piglets experimentally infected the first day post partum with oocysts of the coccidium Isospora suis, the activities of dipeptidylpeptidase IV (EC.3.4.14.5.; DAP IV) and gamma-glutamyl transferase (EC.2.3.2.2.; GGT) in the microvillous zone of enterocytes were evaluated by scanning densitometry. The tissue of the small intestine in piglets infected with a dose of 100,000 oocysts of the coccidia of I. suis was examined in the period from the first till the eleventh day post infection (DPI)...

Using several novel in vitro culture systems, we have examined the tissue-specific regulation of the proglucagon-derived peptides, at the levels of proglucagon gene expression and pGdp synthesis and secretion. Our studies indicate that proglucagon gene expression in intenstine, hypothalamus and pancreas is under the regulatory control of protein kinase A- but not a protein kinase C-dependent pathway. PKA and PKC stimulate secretion of the intestinal pGdp's, whereas only PKA stimulates secretion of the hypothalamic peptides...

Axonal tracing techniques were used in combination with immunohistochemistry to examine the distribution of neuropeptides in afferent pathways from the uterine cervix of the cat. Primary afferent neurons innervating the uterine cervix were identified by axonal transport of the dye, fast blue, injected into the cervix. Fifteen to twenty-five days after the injection, dorsal root ganglia (L1-S3) were removed and incubated for 48-72 h in culture medium containing colchicine to increase the levels of peptides. Calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP), cholecystokinin (CCK), leucine-enkephalin (LENK), somatostatin, substance P and vasoactive intenstinal polypeptide (VIP) were identified by use of indirect immunohistochemical techniques...

During fetal life, formation and arrangement of the microcirculatory bed in the serous membrane of the sigmoid colon correspond to the growth and functioning of the latter at different stages of ontogenesis. Two periods in the development of the microcirculatory bed of the serous membrane of the sigmoid colon are revealed: the first period coincides with the first half of the fetal development when capillary growth is considerable, i.e. with the growth of metabolic part in the microcirculatory bed; the second period coincides with the second half of the fetal development when intensified growth of the sigmoid portion of the large intenstine and its transport sections in the microcirculatory bed (arterioles, precapillaries, postcapillaries, venules) are observed...

Data on the extensiveness and intensity of infection of Kildin island cod with Echinorhynchus gadi in various seasons are given. E. gadi was proved to have a one-year life cycle and Gammarus duebeni as an intermediate host in the lake. A change of the parasite generations occurs in late summer--autumn. A high extensiveness (100%) and intensity of Kildin cod infection with E. gadi depends on the feeding habits (monophagy) and narrow distribution range of the host. Infection intensity is directly correlated with the fish age...
