Pseudomonas aeruginosa produces a large number of virulence factors, including the extracellular protein, Exotoxin A (ETA). Human Neutrophil Peptide 1 (HNP1) neutralizes the Exotoxin A. HNP1 belongs to the family of α-defensins, small effector peptides of the innate immune system that combat against microbial infections. Neutralization of bacterial toxins such as ETA by HNP1 is a novel biological function in addition to direct killing of bacteria. The IL-22 signaling pathway is critical for regulating mucosal defense and limiting bacterial dissemination. IL-22 is unusual among interleukins because it does not directly regulate the function of conventional immune cells, but instead targets cells at outer body barriers, such as respiratory epithelial cells. Three known compounds, stemofoline (1), (2'S)-hydroxystemofoline (2), and (11Z)-1',2'-didehydrostemofoline (3), along with two new alkaloids, stemaphylline (4) and stemaphylline-N-oxide (5), have been isolated from a root extract of Stemona aphylla. The structures of these alkaloids were determined on the basis of their spectroscopic data. The analysis of the crude dichloromethane extract by GC-MS in the EIMS mode showed the presence of alkaloids 1-4, the alkaloid 11, and stilbostemin R (12). Bulking and foaming in activated sludge have been associated with filamentous overgrowth. Filamentous Nocardia amarae and nonfilamentous Pseudomonas auruginosa were cultured using fatty acids (C2-C24) as the sole carbon. N. amarae could utilize all acids tested for growth, whereas P. auruginosa hardly grew on acids with 12 or more carbons. Bacterial flora of burn wound smears and hemocultures of 25 patients with burns have been followed up and analysed in the period of one year. Pseudomonas auruginosa have been most commonly isolated from burn wound smears, in 406 (5.6%) and Staphylococcus aureus, in 371 (47.14) samples. The most important hemoculture isolates has been Staphylococcus aureus found in 34 (57.6%) of samples. One multiresistant strain of Staphylococcus aureus represented 91% of all Staphylococcus aureus strains isolated from hemocultures and 84% from burn wound smears...
