BACKGROUND: Since 2015, a major economic crisis in Brazil has led to increasing poverty and the implementation of long-term fiscal austerity measures that will substantially reduce expenditure on social welfare programmes as a percentage of the country's GDP over the next 20 years. The Bolsa Família Programme (BFP)-one of the largest conditional cash transfer programmes in the world-and the nationwide primary healthcare strategy (Estratégia Saúde da Família [ESF]) are affected by fiscal austerity, despite being among the policy interventions with the strongest estimated impact on child mortality in the country...

Adrenaline and noradrenaline bind to membrane receptors of the superfamily of G protein-coupled receptors (GPCR) in target cells, where they modulate physiological responses such as metabolism, vasoconstriction, vasodilation and proliferation. Alteration in their function is associated with conditions such as hypertension, benign prostatic hyperplasia and cardiac hypertrophy. In response to adrenaline, receptors form signaling complexes, which enables adrenergic action to be specific, rapid and efficient. These signaling complexes or signalosomes are composed of kinases, phosphatases, and adapter and scaffold proteins, which together modulate the receptor function...

Benzodiazepines (BZDs) are central nervous system (CNS) depressants which are widely used to treat insomnia and anxiety, despite having long-term adverse side effects. (Fortea González, Oriolo, Balcells Oliveró, Sánchez Del Valle & Castellvi, 2017). As with alcohol, continued use can lead to tolerance and dependence phenomena. Discontinuation in such cases can produce abstinence symptoms such as tremors, anxiety, seizures and, occasionally, death (Brett y Murnion, 2015).

Depression is a common psychiatric disorder and a leading cause of disability worldwide. Multiple and diverse factors are involved in its cause although biologic factors are prominent. The present study reviews the evidence about the role that gamma-aminobutyric acid plays in the complex pathogenesis of depression, particularly in women. The implication of gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) is based mainly from animal models whereas clinical studies in depressed patients show alterations of GABA levels in plasma and cerebrospinal fluid...
