Multidrug-resistant bacteria have become the predominant etiology in bovine female reproductive tract infections and thus require effective treatment approaches. The main goal of this study was the molecular detection of mecA, blaZ, tetK, and aacA-aphD genes in Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) responsible for methicillin, beta-lactam, tetracycline, and aminoglycoside resistance respectively. Phylogenetic analysis was conducted to check the homology of staphylococcal genes with NCBI sequences. The in-vitro efficacy of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) in combination therapies against MDR S...

Interleukin-6 (IL-6) superfamily cytokines play critical roles during human pregnancy by promoting trophoblast differentiation, invasion, and endocrine function, and maintaining embryo immunotolerance and protection. In contrast, the unbalanced activity of pro-inflammatory factors such as interferon gamma (IFNγ) and granulocyte-macrophage colony-stimulating factor (GM-CSF) at the maternal-fetal interface have detrimental effects on trophoblast function and differentiation. This study demonstrates how the IL-6 cytokine family member oncostatin M (OSM) and STAT3 activation regulate trophoblast fusion and endocrine function in response to pro-inflammatory stress induced by IFNγ and GM-CSF...

OBJECTIVE: To determine whether clinical outcomes among clients undergoing medical abortion after 12 weeks' gestation differ by provider cadre. METHODS: Randomized controlled trial conducted among eligible clients seeking abortion between 13 and 20 weeks' gestation. Participants seeking in-facility abortion were randomized to receive care from a mid-level provider (nurse/midwife) or physician. The primary outcome was median time to expulsion with non-inferiority margin of -1...

Trophoblast stem cells (TSC) are a proliferative multi-potent population derived from the trophectoderm of the blastocyst, which will give rise to all the functional cell types of the trophoblast compartment of the placenta. The isolation and culture of TSC in vitro represent a robust model to study mechanisms of trophoblast differentiation into mature cells both in successful and diseased pregnancy. Despite the highly conserved functions of the placenta, there is extreme variability in placental morphology, fetal/maternal interface, and development among eutherian mammals...

OBJECTIVES: To evaluate first-trimester ultrasound imaging of eccentric implantation in predicting the probability of retained placenta. METHODS: A total of 61 cases with gestational sac eccentrically implanted in first-trimester ultrasound imaging was selected. Demographic and obstetric data were collected through data extraction of the electronic medical record at the time of delivery admission. Baseline characteristics (including age, gestational age of first-trimester ultrasound, size of gestational sac, gestational age of delivery), delivery outcomes (mode of delivery, retained placenta or placental fragments, blood loss, postpartum hemorrhage and postpartum ultrasound imaging) were collected and analyzed...

Ethnoveterinary medicine (EVM) has been used by local South African communities for centuries. However, the knowledge of EVM is under threat due to the influence of Western medicine and acculturation. This study aimed to document the knowledge of ethnoveterinary medicinal plants in four villages within the Mahikeng Local Municipality to help preserve this valuable knowledge. The study used a qualitative research approach and targeted practitioners and holders of ethnoveterinary knowledge in four villages. Participants were recruited using key informants and snowball techniques, and in-depth interviews were conducted using semi-structured interview schedules...

Rhinoceros species range from near threatened to critically endangered due to habitat loss and poaching. A sustainable ex situ breeding population is critically important to maintain genetic diversity and help ensure the survival of the species; however, not all populations under human care are self-sustaining. While rhinoceros reproductive physiology and pathology have been well studied, there is still a paucity of information describing the normal parameters of parturition and neonatal landmarks. Using video recordings, medical records, and keeper logs, we reviewed and compared data regarding the parturition of three rhinoceros species (black rhinoceros (BR) ( Diceros bicornis ), n = 4; greater one-horned rhinoceros (GOHR) ( Rhinoceros unicornis ), n = 21; and southern white rhinoceros (SWR) ( Ceratotherium simum simum ), n = 22) managed under human care in the United States...

Angular pregnancies are rare and difficult to diagnose. Evidence suggests they are associated with a higher risk of intrauterine growth restriction and abnormal third stage of labor due to a retained placenta. The lack of standardized AP diagnostic criteria impacts on their correct identification and makes the treatment of potential complications challenging. We present a case of the successful conservative surgical management of a retained placenta after a term AP also complicated by intrauterine growth restriction...

INTRODUCTION AND IMPORTANCE: Postpartum hemorrhage (PPH) can be defined as excessive bleeding (>500 ml) from the genital tract after the delivery of baby upto 6 weeks. PPH accounts for major cause of maternal mortality rate. Prevention and early intervention can prevent this complication of delivery. However condition like placenta accreta leads to retention of placenta and makes PPH inevitable. CASE SUMMARY: We present the case of massive postpartum hemorrhage secondary to Placenta accreta in young primigravida with RH negative pregnancy...

Antimicrobial use (AMU) is critical to preserving animal health and welfare. However, the development of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) represents a public health threat. Although most antimicrobials used on the farm require a veterinarian prescription, farmworkers make daily on-farm treatment decisions. Therefore, farmworker training is vital to promote responsible AMU. This research project aimed to evaluate the impact of farmworker antimicrobial stewardship (AMS) training on the quantity of AMU on dairy farms in Ohio and California...

This study leveraged a growing data set of producer-recorded phenotypes for mastitis, reproductive diseases (metritis and retained placenta), and metabolic diseases (ketosis, milk fever, and displaced abomasum) to investigate the potential presence of inbreeding depression for these disease traits. Phenotypic, pedigree, and genomic information were obtained for 354,043 and 68,292 US Holstein and Jersey cows, respectively. Total inbreeding coefficients were calculated using both pedigree and genomic information; the latter included inbreeding estimates obtained using a genomic relationship matrix and runs of homozygosity (ROH)...

Individual cow and calf health data were collected from 16 USDA certified organic farms from across the United States. Eleven of these farms provided treatment costs for some or all of the following cow health issues (mean cost): mastitis ($46...

Organotypic slice cultures provide several advantages over primary and cell line culture models. Unlike monolayer cultures, organotypic slice cultures retain the tissue's 3-D architecture, multi-lineage cell populations, and many complex functional characteristics. Organotypic slice cultures can be exposed to biological, pharmacological, or environmental agents and analyzed to predict in vivo responses. Herein, we describe a method for preparing organotypic slice cultures generated from rat placenta.

Barriers to studying this population exist and add to knowledge gaps. The goal of this study is to determine the clinical characteristics and frequency of complications within 1 year of a postpartum hemorrhage diagnosis and the psychiatric sequelae within 7 days of a postpartum hemorrhage diagnosis in mothers with a pre-existing mental health diagnosis prior to delivery versus those without...

Dystocia represents a life-threatening condition for mare and foal. Morbidity and mortality rates due to a difficult birth, as well as the influence on fertility of the mare were analyzed, based on a review of publications. This was aggravated by the fact that no standardized diagnostic code was used and that most publications do not clearly describe how extensively the examinations were performed beforehand. Retentio secundinarum is the most common complication caused by dystocia. Other complications are injuries to the soft birth canal and the colon...
