Message sticks are wooden objects once widely used in Indigenous Australia for facilitating important long-distance communications. Within this tradition an individual wishing to send a message would carve a stick and apply conventional symbols to its surface. The stick was entrusted to a messenger who carried the object into the territory of another community together with a memorised oral statement. Between the 1880s and the 1910s, settlers and international scholars took great interest in message sticks and this was reflected in efforts to document, collect and store them in museums worldwide...

OBJECTIVES: Olfactory habituation is a transient decrease in olfactory sensitivity caused by prolonged odor exposure, aiding in the discernment of new olfactory stimuli against the background. We explored the impact of subclinical olfactory impairment on odor habituation using age as a proxy. METHODS: Before the actual experiment, the individual olfactory threshold for the rose-like odorant phenylethyl alcohol (PEA) was assessed separately for the left and right nostril using the "Sniffin' Sticks" test, and ratings for odor intensity and pleasantness were collected...

Type-V deep eutectic solvents (DESs) are a newly emerging unique class of solvents obtained by physical mixing and heating of non-ionic components. These solvents show deviation from the thermodynamic ideality. Compared to type-I to IV DESs, type-V DESs are less explored and their physical chemistry is in its nascent stage. In this work, we have chosen a type-V DES based on menthol-thymol (MT) for our working media. Solvent and rotational dynamics were studied with varying temperature using a well-known solvatochromic probe, Coumarin 153 (C153)...

KEY CLINICAL MESSAGE: Clinicians should not only consider the presence of metallic foreign bodies within the digestive tract but also contemplate the possibility of nicotine poisoning during the diagnostic process. ABSTRACT: When clinicians encounter cases of accidental ingestion of some types of heated tobacco, they must consider not only nicotine poisoning but also the possibility of a metallic foreign body within the digestive tract during diagnosis. In children, even sharp or relatively large ingested foreign bodies can spontaneously pass below the esophagus...

Background : Depression and cognitive impairment are recognized complications of COVID-19. This study aimed to assess cognitive performance in clinically diagnosed post-COVID depression (PCD, n = 25) patients using neuropsychological testing. Methods : The study involved 71 post-COVID patients with matched control groups: recovered COVID-19 individuals without complications (n = 18) and individuals without prior COVID-19 history (n = 19). A post-COVID depression group (PCD, n = 25) was identified based on psychiatric diagnosis, and a comparison group (noPCD, n = 46) included participants with neurological COVID-19 complications, excluding clinical depression...

Background Needle stick injuries caused by various sharp and other items like hypodermic needles and intravenous cannulas are important occupational hazards for healthcare workers (HCW). Preventing injuries is the most effective way to protect workers and requires good awareness and perceptions associated with practice on a daily basis. Therefore, we did a descriptive cross-sectional study involving healthcare workers in a tertiary care hospital to find the level of awareness, perception, and practice associated with needle stick injury and its prevention...

ConspectusThe COVID-19 pandemic further demonstrated the need for usable, reliable, and cost-effective point-of-care diagnostics that can be broadly deployed, ideally for self-testing at home. Antigen tests using more-detectable reporter labels (usually at the cost of reader complexity) achieve better diagnostic sensitivity, supporting the value of higher-analytical-sensitivity reporter technologies in lateral flow.We developed a new approach to simple, inexpensive lateral flow assays (LFAs) of great sensitivity, based on the glow stick peroxyoxalate chemistry widely used in emergency settings and in children's toys...

Venous blood collection testing is one of the most commonly used medical diagnostic methods. Compared with conventional venous blood collection, robotic collection can reduce needle-stick injuries, medical staff workload, and infection risk; allow doctor-patient isolation; and improve collection reliability. Existing venous blood collection robots use rigid puncture needles, which can easily puncture the lower wall of blood vessels, causing vessel damage and collection failure. This paper proposes a bionic blood collection strategy based on a composite puncture needle that mimics the structure and function of mosquito mouthparts...

Abortion is criminalized in Malawi in the absence of a life-threatening condition. Consequently, women often undergo unsafe abortions. A large proportion of abortions performed in Malawi require subsequent treatment at a healthcare facility. We describe the case of a 17-year-old who presented with generalized peritonitis and was found intraoperatively to have a necrotic and perforated uterus with a stick retained in her abdominopelvic cavity from a clandestine abortion. This case demonstrates the need for awareness and vigilance among healthcare providers in all specialties to suspect surgical abortion complications as a cause of generalized peritonitis and points to the need for further studies on the optimal management of such patients...

The purpose of this research was to learn more about the primary and secondary properties of Moroccan natural clay in an effort to better investigate innovative adsorbents and gain access to an ideal adsorption system. Scanning electron microscopy coupled with energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy analysis (SEM-EDX) and X-ray fluorescence were employed for identification. SEM revealed clay grains, including tiny particles and unevenly shaped sticks. First- and second-order rate laws, representing two distinct kinetic models, were applied in the kinetic approach...

Self-assembly processes triggered by physical or chemical driving forces have been applied to fabricate hierarchical materials with subtle nanostructures. However, various physicochemical processes often interfere with each other, and their precise control has remained a great challenge. Here, in this paper, a rational synthesis of 1D magnetite-chain and mesoporous-silica-nanorod (Fe3 O4 &mSiO2 ) branched magnetic nanochains via a physical-chemical coupling coassembly approach is reported. Magnetic-field-induced assembly of magnetite Fe3 O4 nanoparticles and isotropic/anisotropic assembly of mesoporous silica are coupled to obtain the delicate 1D branched magnetic mesoporous nanochains...

METHODS: This study included individuals aged ≥18 years, divided into quantitative OD only, parosmia, and phantosmia groups. BACKGROUND AND HYPOTHESIS: Persistent auditory verbal hallucinations (pAVHs) and olfactory identification impairment are common in schizophrenia (SCZ), but the neuroimaging mechanisms underlying both pAVHs and olfactory identification impairment are unclear. This study aimed to investigate whether pAVHs and olfactory identification impairment in SCZ patients are associated with changes in cortical thickness. STUDY DESIGN: In this study, cortical thickness was investigated in 78 SCZ patients with pAVHs (pAVH group), 58 SCZ patients without AVHs (non-AVH group), and 83 healthy controls (HC group) using 3T magnetic resonance imaging...

After the loss of a trait, theory predicts that the molecular machinery underlying its phenotypic expression should decay. Yet, empirical evidence is contrasting. Here, we test the hypotheses that (1) the molecular ground plan of a lost trait could persist due to pleiotropic effects on other traits and (2) that gene co-expression network architecture could constrain individual gene expression. Our testing ground has been the Bacillus stick insect species complex, which contains close relatives that are either bisexual or parthenogenetic...

INTRODUCTION: Type C hepatic encephalopathy (HE) is a decompensating event of chronic liver disease leading to severe motor and cognitive impairment. The progression of type C HE is associated with changes in brain metabolite concentrations measured by 1 H magnetic resonance spectroscopy (MRS), most noticeably a strong increase in glutamine to detoxify brain ammonia. In addition, alterations of brain cellular architecture have been measured ex vivo by histology in a rat model of type C HE...
