BACKGROUND: Given the underutilization of contraception in India, this study was undertaken to gauge cisgender female clients' knowledge of, attitudes toward, and barriers to contraceptive usage in North India. METHODOLOGY: The present study was done at a tertiary care Institute in North India, where 209 structured interviews were conducted with cisgender female patients attending the outpatient department. One-way chi-square tests for independence, Kruskal-Wallis test, and Wilcoxon test were applied to quantitative data...

BACKGROUND: The obstetrics and gynaecology (OB-GYN) residency training program in Lao People's Democratic Republic (PDR) began in 2003 based on the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) and 'Reproductive, maternal, newborn, and child health interventions (RMNCH) strategies and action plan'. However, the training program had not been properly evaluated previously. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the current postgraduate OB-GYN residency training program in Lao PDR by using CIPP model to identify the current problems (the strengths and weaknesses) and suggest a future plan to promote continuous improvement...

Simulation training at trainees' actual workplace offers benefits over traditional simulation-based team training. We prospectively investigated whether regular in situ simulation training of neonatal emergencies in an interprofessional and interdisciplinary team could be used to identify and rectify latent safety threats (LSTs).For this purpose, we conducted 1-day in situ simulation trainings at the Department of Gynaecology and Obstetrics, Feldbach, Austria, targeting anaesthesiologists, obstetricians, midwives, nurses and consultant paediatricians...

OBJECTIVE: To study the adverse maternal and perinatal outcomes in women with severe pre-eclampsia (SPE) among different ranges of proteinuria. METHODS: This prospective cohort study was conducted in Jawaharlal Institute of Postgraduate Medical Education and Research, India. After obtaining informed written consent, the 202 singleton women fulfilling the criteria of severe features of pre-eclampsia were stratified based on the value of urine protein-creatinine ratio (UPCR) as mild, moderate, severe, and massive proteinuria during pregnancy...

Obstetric emergencies are challenging, requiring implementation of a rapid sequence of interventions in a very short time to optimize clinical outcome. Managing obstetric emergencies could evoke ethical dilemmas for the obstetrician because of limited time to adequately educate the patient about her condition; impaired consciousness of the patient to give consent; nonexistent prior patient -doctor relationship and the need to consider both the patient and the fetus. In Low- and middle-income countries (LMICs), poor access to appropriate emergency care, structural and financial barriers and a largely uneducated and a deeply cultural population contribute to the ethical challenges...

Preterm birth (PTB) is the leading cause of neonatal morbidity and mortality. Maternal stress during pregnancy is an established risk factor for PTB. We aimed to review the effects of stress-reducing interventions during pregnancy on PTB. Studies reporting on stress-reducing interventions during pregnancy and PTB rates in general low-risk obstetric populations were included. PTB rates, low birth weight (LBW) rates, mean gestational age and birth weight, maternal anxiety and stress, and adverse perinatal outcomes were investigated...

INTRODUCTION: The career intentions of medical students can exert influence on service provision and medical staffing in the health services. It is vital for a specialty's development and sustainability that it has a constant stream of trainees into it annually. An appreciation of how a specialty is viewed by medical students can be used as an opportunity for early intervention in order to improve perception of the specialty and reduce future workforce problems, such as retention and attrition within obstetrics and gynaecology (O&G)...

Cardiovascular disease is a major cause of mortality in women and is the leading cause of pregnancy-related mortality in Australia. This study aims to discover the extent of teaching regarding women's cardiovascular health in Australian and New Zealand medical schools. All 22 medical schools in Australia and New Zealand were approached for participation in completing this survey. Seven medical schools (32%) completed the survey and demonstrated that within our sample population, findings suggest that while women's cardiovascular health is present in medical curricula, there is a large variability in the rigour and depth as to which it is taught, as well as possible lack of explicit teaching and examination regarding this topic...

BACKGROUND: The clitoris has long been ignored in medical literature and teaching, with the first paper describing its anatomy only published in 1993. It is essential that those working in women's health understand the anatomy of this important female sexual organ. AIMS: The aim of this study was to assess the level of knowledge of the anatomy of the clitoris across five cohorts in a busy teaching maternity hospital in Ireland. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A questionnaire was devised, asking ten consultants, ten non-consultant hospital doctors (NCHDs), ten midwives, ten midwifery students and ten medical students to name the anatomical parts of a 3D model of the clitoris...

Obtaining medical consent preoperatively is one of the key steps in preparing for surgery, and is an important step in informed decision making with the patient. According to good medical practice guidelines, doctors are required to have the knowledge and skills to treat patients as well as inform them, respect their wishes, and establish trust between themselves and their patients. Valid consent includes elements of competence, disclosure, understanding, and voluntariness. Documentation of these elements is also very important...

A recent editorial in this Journal argued that increasing surgical complexity coupled with more limited training calls for separating obstetrics from gynaecology. The speciality suffers manpower challenges and high attrition rates. There is an apparent gulf in approach between researchers focussing on the views of UK graduates or trainees and workforce planners who address the problem through overseas recruitment. Whilst available literature provides scant, if any, indication as to how to address current challenges, it is important that advocates for women's health assess and mitigate potential drawbacks when exploring the way forward...
