A 41-year-old woman with a history of asthma presented to the emergency department with complaints of progressive malaise, dyspnea, vomiting, and diarrhea for a week. Upon presentation, the patient was hemodynamically unstable and exhibited severe respiratory distress. A chest computed tomography revealed consolidation of the left upper lobe with confluence in the left perihilar region and a left pleural effusion. The patient was admitted to the intensive care unit for further management of respiratory failure, and a chest tube was placed on the left side...

INTRODUCTION: Respiratory ailments, encompassing a spectrum of disorders, are a leading cause of mortality and morbidity in children, with pneumonia being particularly significant, accounting for 16% of child mortality. To ensure timely engagement with healthcare services, it is imperative to instill awareness through Information, Education, and Communication (IEC) initiatives targeting mothers of children under five. The primary objective of this pilot study is to assess the feasibility of a community-based intervention on health-seeking behaviour, knowledge, and practice measures concerning the management and prevention of pneumonia in children...

While most episodes of community-acquired pneumonia are caused by Streptococcus pneumoniae and respiratory viruses, other atypical pathogens can also be responsible for lung infections. The Infectious Diseases Service of the Lausanne University Hospital (CHUV) organizes an annual meeting aimed at general practitioners, during which interesting clinical cases are presented. In this article, we summarize five cases of community-aquired respiratory infection due to atypical pathogens that were presented during the 2023 meeting, each with a particular teaching point...

BACKGROUND: Pneumonia is a leading cause of morbidity and mortality in children < 5 years. We describe nasopharyngeal carriage of respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), human metapneumovirus (hMPV), and influenza virus among children with fast-breathing pneumonia in Karachi, Pakistan. METHODS: We performed a cross-sectional analysis of nasopharyngeal swabs from children aged 2-59 months with fast-breathing pneumonia, enrolled in the randomized trial of amoxicillin versus placebo for fast-breathing pneumonia (RETAPP) (NCT02372461) from 2014 to 2016...

BACKGROUND: Community-acquired pneumonia (CAP) is a common reason for intensive care unit (ICU) admission and sepsis. Acute kidney injury (AKI) is a frequent complication of community-acquired pneumonia and is associated with increased short- and long-term morbidity and mortality and healthcare costs. OBJECTIVE: Describe the prevalence of AKI in patients with CAP requiring mechanical ventilation and evaluate its association with inhospital mortality. DESIGN: Retrospective cohort...

Despite increased risk of morbidity and mortality among older adults due to preventable infectious diseases such as influenza, shingles, pneumonia, and COVID-19, many forego receiving some, if not all, of these vaccinations. This study examines vaccination motivators and deterrents for undervaccinated older adults in North Dakota (ND). Adults aged 65+ in ND were mailed a survey (n = 901) with questions gauging vaccination behaviors and perceptions, with 132 of these indicating not receiving certain vaccinations...

Existing recommended first-line antibiotic agents for MRSA pneumonia have several shortcomings. We reviewed 29 cases of community- and hospital-acquired MRSA pneumonia managed at our hospital. Lincosamide monotherapy was administered to 21/29 (72%) and was the predominant antibiotic regimen (> 50% course duration) in 19/29 (66%). Patients receiving lincosamide-predominant monotherapy were no more likely to die or require intensive care unit admission than patients receiving vancomycin-predominant monotherapy (5/19 (26%) versus 4/7 (57%), p = 0...

Older adults are more vulnerable to the negative impacts of infectious diseases than younger individuals. However, regardless of the importance and effectiveness of vaccines to reduce morbidity and mortality, issues remain with vaccine hesitancy among this population. Older adults' sources of immunization information and their level of trust in those sources may play a role in their vaccination behaviors. This research aimed to better understand the role of information sources and related issues of trust as related to vaccine uptake among older adults...

The livestock sector of Pakistan is increasing rapidly and it plays important role both for rural community and national economy. It is estimated that almost 8 million rural people are involved in livestock rearing and earning about 35-40% of their income from the livestock sector. Mycoplasma bovis (M. bovis) infection causes significant economic losses in dairy animals especially young calf in the form of clinical illnesses such as pneumonia, poly-arthritis, respiratory distress and mortality. M. bovis is hard to diagnose and control because of uneven disease appearance and it is usually noticed in asymptomatic animals...

However, respiratory supports may be delivered in more severe clinical condition. In cases with life-threatening ARF, invasive mechanical ventilation (IMV) will be required. Noninvasive strategies such as high-flow nasal therapy (HFNT) or noninvasive ventilation (NIV) by either face mask or helmet might cover the gap between standard oxygen and IMV...

Recent research has revealed that airway epithelial calcium-activated chloride channel-1 (CLCA1) is implicated in the inflammation of multiple human respiratory diseases, but the specific role in acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) remains unknown. To investigate the role of CLCA1 in ARDS, 80 participants, including 26 ARDS patients, 26 patients with community-acquired pneumonia (CAP) and 28 control subjects, were enrolled in this study. As the result shows, the level of CLCA1 was significantly increased in ARDS patients and positively correlated with neutrophil infiltration and the poor prognosis of ARDS...

A 12-year-old boy was transferred to our pediatric department from a rural hospital for fever, cough, and vomiting associated with thrombocytopenia, non-immune hemolytic anemia, and acute kidney injury, leading to the diagnosis of hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS). Pneumonia is a clinical syndrome characterised by fever, cough and alveolar infiltration of purulent fluid, caused by infection with a microbial pathogen. It can be caused by infections with bacteria, viruses or fungi, but a causative organism is identified in less than half of cases. The most common type of pneumonia is community-acquired pneumonia, which is caused by infections acquired outside the hospital. Current guidelines for pneumonia diagnosis require imaging to confirm the clinical suspicion of pneumonia...
