Rice mill polishing residue (RMPR), an abundant and cheap agro residue, was used as substrate for microbial growth of Bacillus subtilis MTCC 2423 by submerged fermentation process to produce surfactin. Nutrients present in the residue were sufficient to sustain the growth of the microorganism. Multi stage foam fractionation followed by acid precipitation was used to concentrate and recover the product. Recoverable yield of surfactin was 4.17 g/kg residue. Vacuolar Ca2+-transporters could play an important role for salt tolerance in rice (Oryza sativa L.) root. Here, we compared the expression profiles of putative vacuolar cation/H+ exchanger (CAX) and calmodulin-regulated autoinhibited Ca2+-ATPase (ACA) in rice roots of salt tolerant cv. Pokkali and salt sensitive cv. IR29. In addition to five putative vacuolar CAX genes in the rice genome, a new CAX gene (OsCAX4) has been annotated. Cu is an essential element for plant growth, but the molecular mechanisms of its distribution and redistribution within the plants are unknown. Here, we report that Yellow stripe-like16 (YSL16) is involved in Cu distribution and redistribution in rice (Oryza sativa). Rice YSL16 was expressed in the roots, leaves, and unelongated nodes at the vegetative growth stage and highly expressed in the upper nodes at the reproductive stage. YSL16 was expressed at the phloem of nodes and vascular tissues of leaves. Knockout of this gene resulted in a higher Cu concentration in the older leaves but a lower concentration in the younger leaves at the vegetative stage...

In vitro oxidation of the HIV-1 nucleocapsid protein p7 by the C-nitroso compound 3-nitrosobenzamide (NOBA) has been investigated. When reconstituted p7 was incubated with NOBA, three disulfide bonds were formed per molecule of p7, Cys 15-Cys 18, Cys 28-Cys 36, and Cys 39-Cys 49. These were identified using the proteolytic enzyme endoproteinase Lys-C and mass spectrometry. When the denatured protein (Apo-p7) was incubated with NOBA, a more random pattern of multiple S-S linkages was found. Oxidation of reconstituted p7 also occurred on treatment with cupric ions (Cu2+), and the same three major disulfide bonds were formed as in the reaction with NOBA...
