AIMS: New Zealand currently defines the adolescent and young adult (AYA) group for cancer services as young people 12-24 years of age, while other countries favour a designation of 15-29 years. This study was undertaken to compare cancer incidence and survival among 25-29 year olds to New Zealand's younger AYA population and to assess survival for our 15-29 year population against international benchmarks. METHODS: Diagnostic and demographic information for cancer registrations between 2000 and 2009 for 25-29 year olds was obtained from the New Zealand Cancer Registry...

Breast cancer rarely metastasizes to the uterus. Here, we report two breast cancer patients with synchronous metastases to the uterus. Case 1 highlights a 46-year-old female with invasive ductal carcinoma who presented with a breast mass and was found to have uterine enlargement on positron emission tomography (PET) scan. Biopsy revealed a metastatic 4 mm focus of breast cancer in the background of endometrial hyperplasia. Case 2 reports a 62-year-old postmenopausal female diagnosed with lobular carcinoma of the breast following an abnormal screening mammogram...

BACKGROUND: Incidence rates of in situ breast carcinomas have increased due to widespread adoption of mammography. Very little is known about why some women with in situ breast cancer later develop second primary breast cancers. METHODS: In this population-based nested case-control study among in situ breast cancer survivors, including 539 cases with a second primary breast cancer and 994 matched controls, we evaluated the association between first degree family history of breast cancer and risk of developing a second primary breast cancer...

Radiation therapy is used in the management of a number of childhood cancers and can have significant effects on skeletal growth. We present the case of a 35-year-old woman who developed a hypoplastic pelvis and buttocks following radiotherapy for rhabdomyosarcoma of the vagina at the age of 2. At the age of 25, the patient underwent bilateral buttock augmentation with a two-stage reconstruction using tissue expansion followed by definitive augmentation with anatomical breast implant insertion. The patient continues to have a satisfactory outcome 10 years following reconstruction, having undergone a single uplift procedure and exchange of implants through the original incision 9 years postoperatively...

Radiological and histological features of breast leiomyosarcoma can mimic a wide variety of other breast lesions, such as mesenchymal tumors, breast lymphomas, poorly differentiated carcinomas and metaplastic breast carcinomas. The authors present the case of a 62-year-old woman with a primary breast leiomyosarcoma with synchronous ipsilateral lung adenocarcinoma. The latter was an incidental finding during pre-surgical staging examinations. Clinicopathological, immunophenotypic and imaging features cancer are described...

We present the case of a patient with relapsing anti-synthetase syndrome (ASS) that may have been triggered by monoclonal antibody trastuzumab therapy given for breast cancer. A 52-year-old female with a history of anti-Jo1-associated ASS went into remission with glucocorticoids and mycophenolate mofetil. Her past history included invasive ductal carcinoma of the right breast that was fully treated six years prior to the onset of ASS. She subsequently developed recurrent right-sided breast cancer that was treated with right mastectomy and six cycles of cyclophosphamide-docetaxel chemotherapy...

The presence of two or more malignant tumors of different histological entities in an individual is referred to as multiple primary malignant neoplasms (MPMN). These are becoming more frequently encountered and reported in clinical practice nowadays. Majority of MPMN are diagnosed in elderly, where senility might alter the management plan. Despite the increased reporting of MPMN in the literature, only a few elaborated on the management of such cases. Also, the combination of synchronous primary appendicular and breast cancers-to our knowledge-has never been reported...

BACKGROUND: African-American breast cancer survivors commonly demonstrate low serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25(OH)D). Decreased cutaneous conversion, high levels of adiposity, and even breast cancer treatment may influence vitamin D status. Previous investigations have analyzed African-American women in aggregate with other breast cancer survivors and have not comprehensively addressed these influential factors. OBJECTIVES: To determine the prevalence of low serum 25(OH)D in an exclusively African-American cohort of female breast cancer survivors with overweight/obesity and to evaluate the role of ultraviolet (UV) light exposure, body composition, and dietary sources of vitamin D on serum 25(OH)D levels...

A 72-year-old man underwent total gastrectomy for gastric cancer (por2, T3, N2, Stage IIIA). Eleven courses of postoperative chemotherapy with TS-1 (tegafur/gimeracil/oteracil) were administered. Five months after surgery, the serum carcinoembryonic antigen value was slightly elevated. However, computed tomography did not reveal any metastatic lesions in other organs. Two years after surgery, the patient felt a mass in the left mammary. A 2-cm tumor was palpable in the central portion of the breast. Ultrasonography revealed a hypoechoic tumor, which was Class 3 on aspiration biopsy cytological examination...

Lung adenocarcinoma (LADC)is a general form of non-small cell lung cancer that represents a significant threat to public health worldwide. The 5-year-survival rate for LADC is currently below 15%. The transcription factor KLF15, also called kidney-enriched KLF (KKLF), has been proven to play a role in inhibiting proliferation and diversification of carcinoma cells, including those of the endometrium, pancreas and breast, but the involvement of KLF15 in LADC has not previously been studied. In this study, we compared the in vitro expression of KLF15 in human LADC tissues and adjacent normal lung tissues...

INTRODUCTION: Mucinous carcinoma is a variant of invasive breast carcinomas that accounts for 2% of them and has a better prognosis in contrast to the non-specific invasive carcinoma. They regularly are positive for estrogen and progesterone receptors and, generally, they do not overexpress HER2. When HER2 is positive, the first line treatment is trastuzumab; although the resistance is 52-89% for the non-specific carcinoma, it has been described just once in mucinous carcinoma. CASE SUMMARY: A 48-year-old female presented with a lump in her right breast and after a biopsy, it was diagnosed as mucinous carcinoma in the core biopsy and surgical resection, with positive hormone receptors and HER2 positive (3+) in 100% of the tumor cells...

Ectopic breast tissue and male breast cancer are both very rare diseases with only a few reports in the literature. Here, we present the first case of ectopic male breast cancer in the perineum. The patient was a 70-year-old man with a palpable mass in the perineum. A wide local excision and inguinal lymph node dissection revealed invasive breast carcinoma of no special type involving the skin and subcutis, and inguinal lymph node metastases. Immunohistochemical staining showed that the tumor cells were strongly positive for estrogen and progesterone receptors and negative for human epidermal growth factor receptor 2...
