BACKGROUND: Radiation therapy (RT) utilization for elderly women with respect to human epidermal growth factor receptor 2 (HER2) receptor status has not been evaluated. Our purpose was to determine differences in RT utilization and breast cancer specific survival (BCSS) for elderly breast cancer patients with distinct molecular biomarkers. METHODS: The Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results database was queried for women ≥70 years of age diagnosed with T1N0M0 breast cancer between 2010 and 2013 receiving breast conservation...

INTRODUCTION: The conservative surgery is more and more indicated for breast cancer. However, we still fear local recurrence which is mostly due to residual tumors?. Several techniques have been used to minimize theses residual tumors; one of them is the systematic circumferential tumor cavity shaving (SCTCS). METHODS: We sampled 75 female patients who had conservative surgery with positive shaved margins in the anatomopathology examination and to whom a complementary treatment with mastectomy have been decided...

A 57-year-old man presented to the surgical oncology clinic with a mildly tender mass under his right arm. Four years prior, the patient had a melanoma removed from his right shoulder along with an ipsilateral right axillary sentinel lymph sampling. Computed tomography (CT) scan was negative for metastatic disease at that time. The patient did not undergo completion axillary node dissection and was lost to follow-up. The patient was originally from Australia, did not tan but reported multiple sunburns before age 18...

Chronic inflammation may be a risk factor for breast cancer development and progression, yet which inflammatory biomarkers and pathways are relevant is unknown. The study included 27,071 Women's Health Study participants (mean, 54.5 years old) free of cancer and cardiovascular disease at enrollment (1992 to 1995) with baseline measures of four inflammatory biomarkers: high sensitivity C-reactive protein (hsCRP), fibrinogen, N-acetyl side-chains of acute phase proteins (GlycA), and soluble intercellular adhesion molecule-1 (sICAM-1)...

In most cases, cutaneous metastases develop after the diagnosis of the primary internal malignancy has been established, but sometimes they can be discovered earlier or simultaneously. We describe a case of a 90-year-old woman who presented to the emergency room in poor general condition, with cutaneous lesions characterized by hot, infiltrated, violaceous and erythematous plaques involving the left chest wall. The clinical and histopathological findings were consistent with the recently described variant of inflammatory cutaneous metastatic carcinoma named carcinoma hemorrhagiectoides...

A 61-year-old woman was referred to our hospital because of a right breast mass. A 19 mm hard mass was palpable in the A area of the right breast. A contrast-enhanced MRI showed rim enhancement at the peripheral region of the tumor, which was thought to represent the carcinoma component mainly at the periphery and the matrix component inside the tumor. A low density mass with rim enhancement at the peripheral region was observed in a contrast-enhanced CT, the same as in the MRI. Neither axillary lymph node metastasis nor distant metastasis was observed...

BACKGROUND: Sarcomas are a rare type of breast malignancies and malignant peripheral nerve sheath tumors of the breast are even rarer. There are no specific clinical and radiological features for the diagnosis of this tumor and histological features are also reported to be nonspecific. Therefore, immunohistochemistry is required for its diagnosis. A definitive treatment protocol is unavailable because of its rarity. CASE PRESENTATION: We report a case of a sporadic form of breast malignant peripheral nerve sheath tumor found in a 16-year-old Asian Bangladeshi girl...

Renal cell carcinoma (RCC) is a highly prevalent disease worldwide with many cases being metastasised to various organs during the time of initial presentation. Metastatic RCC to the breast is a rare entity and can mimic primary breast carcinoma. In this article, we present a 63-year-old Caucasian woman presented with a breast mass that was detected by screening mammography and found to have a biopsy proven grade-II clear RCC in the breast tissue. Despite the high incidence and prevalence of primary breast cancer, metastasis from extramammary should be suspected in patients with a prior history of other cancers...

Background: Population-based data on the risk of cardiac death among cancer survivors are needed. This scenario was evaluated in cancer survivors (>5 years) registered within the Surveillance, Epidemiology and End Results (SEER) database. METHODS: The SEER database was queried using SEER*Stat to determine the frequency of cardiac death compared to other causes of death; and to determine heart disease-specific and cancer-specific survival rates in survivors of each of the 10 most common cancers in men and women in the SEER database...

BACKGROUND: Breast cancer, the most commonly diagnosed cancer among women and leading cause of cancer-related deaths worldwide, exhibits aggressive behavior in indigenous African women evidenced by high histologic grade tumours with low hormone receptor positivity. Aggressive breast cancers grow quickly, easily metastasize and recur and often have unfavourable outcomes. The current study investigated candidate genes that may regulate tumour aggression in Ghanaian women. We hypothesize that increased expression and function of certain genes other than the widely-held view attributing breast cancer aggression in African populations to their younger population age may be responsible for the aggressive nature of tumours...

BACKGROUND: There has recently been a strong interest in the inter-individual variation in normal tissue and tumor response to radiotherapy (RT), because tissue radiosensitivity seems to be under genetic control. Evidence is accumulating on the role of polymorphic genetic variants, such as single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) that could influence normal tissue response after radiation. The most studied SNPs include those in genes involved in DNA repair (single- and double-strand breaks, and base excision) and those active in the response to oxidative stress...

IgG4-related sclerosing disease of the breast is a rare entity with 10 reports in the literature. We report the first case in a male patient. A 48-year-old male presented with 4-week history of palpable right upper outer quadrant breast mass associated with skin puckering. He reported a family history of breast cancer in his aunt. Ultrasound and mammography showed a spiculated 2.5-cm mass associated with skin retraction with extension to the pectoralis muscle. Ultrasound-guided core biopsy was performed. The findings were interpreted as acute and chronic inflammatory process...

PURPOSE: The natural history of pleomorphic lobular carcinoma in situ (PLCIS) remains largely unknown. METHODS: A pathology database search (1995-2012) was performed to identify patients diagnosed with an LCIS variant. Patients with synchronous breast cancer and/or no evidence of pleomorphism were excluded. Original slides were re-evaluated by three pathologists to identify a consensus cohort of PLCIS. Borderline lesions with focal atypia were classified as LCIS with pleomorphic features (LCIS-PF)...

BACKGROUND: Inflammatory breast cancer (IBC) is the most aggressive form of primary breast cancer. CASE REPORT: A 40-year-old woman was referred to our hospital for evaluation of an induration in the right breast, suspected to be breast cancer. The tumor was diagnosed as estrogen receptor-negative, progesterone receptor-negative, HER2-positive, T4dN3cM0 stage IIIc IBC with axillary lymph node metastasis. Rather than surgical intervention, we chose a systemic treatment approach with pertuzumab, trastuzumab, and docetaxel (PTD) combination therapy which was shown to be effective for HER2-positive IBC in the NeoSphere trial...

A 59-year-old woman was noted to have an anterior mediastinal mass on computed tomography at a regular follow-up 13 years after initial surgery for left breast cancer. Magnetic resonance imaging showed an anterior mediastinal mass. A total thymectomy with excision of surrounding lymphoid tissue was performed. Pathological examination of the resected tumor confirmed the diagnosis of thymic metastasis from breast cancer. The patient has been alive for 6 years after thymectomy. Metastases to the thymus are rare, but long-term survival can be expected with appropriate treatment...

Tumor-to-tumor metastasis is a relatively uncommon entity, whereby the so-called 'recipient' tumor is involved by another biologically unrelated 'donor' tumor. Intracranially, meningioma (WHO grade 1) is the most common recipient tumor, while breast and lung cancers are the most common donor tumors. We present an unusual case of intracranial tumor-to-tumor metastasis involving papillary thyroid carcinoma (PTC) believed to have metastasized to an anaplastic meningioma (WHO grade 3). The patient is a 64-year-old female with a history of PTC, whose neuroimaging, performed as part of her staging workup, revealed a right parietal scalp lesion...

Disseminated carcinomatosis of the bone marrow (DCBM) is a condition in which bone marrow (BM) metastases diffusely invade the BM, and is frequently accompanied by disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC). While prostate, lung, breast and stomach malignancies, in addition to neuroblastoma, are the most prevalent non-hematological malignancies to metastasize frequently to the BM, colorectal cancer is a malignancy that rarely metastasizes to the BM. The present case describes a 65-year-old male patient treated by resection and one course adjuvant chemotherapy for stage IIIC rectal cancer who presented with nasal bleeding at 8 months post-surgery...
