INTRODUCTION: COVID-19 vaccination has been associated with rare but severe complications characterized by thrombosis and thrombocytopenia. METHODS AND RESULTS: Here we present three patients who developed de novo or relapse atypical hemolytic uremic syndrome (aHUS) in native kidneys, a median of 3 days (range 2-15) after mRNA-based (Pfizer/BioNTech's, BNT162b2) or adenoviral (AstraZeneca, ChAdOx1 nCoV-19) COVID-19 vaccination. All three patients presented with evident hematological signs of TMA and AKI, and other aHUS triggering or explanatory events were absent...

The purpose of this study is to describe the clinical case of a patient suffering from a gland carcinoma with bilateral inguinal and pelvic lymph node metastases in treatment with weekly administrations of Docetaxel. After two therapy cycles, the patient developed an atypical uremic hemolytic Syndrome (SEUa), treated with infusions of frozen fresh plasma, hemodialysis, and antibiotics. Because of a severe septic secondary complication on an extensive lymph node abscess, the administration of Eculizumab was not possible...

Protein loads in normal subjects increase glomerular filtration rate (GFR), which implies a renal functional reserve (RFR). Patients who have suffered a loss in the number of nephrons may show normal values of GFR due to hyperfiltration of remnant nephrons, with subsequent loss of RFR. This could be an early sign of renal damage, and probably a contributory factor to renal damage progress. The objective of this study is to determine the RFR through technetium-99m diethylene-triamine-penta-acetic acid (99m Tc-DTPA) clearance in patients who have recovered from hemolytic uremic syndrome...

INTRODUCTION: Oxaliplatin is a third-generation platinum compound with proven antitumor activity in the treatment of colorectal cancer. The occurrence of life-threating hemolitic uremic syndrome has been observed after oxaliplatin therapy. The kind of tumor and treatment modalities seem to influence the onset of hemolitic uremic syndrome. METHODS: The clinical course of the case is reviewed and compared with reports of other similar cases in the literature. RESULTS: We describe the development of hemolitic uremic syndrome as a result of prolonged oxaliplatin treatment of a colon cancer patient...

In order to guarantee that harmless food is ingested by consumers, it is essential that strict hygienic procedures are followed both during the elaboration of food and during the procedures that range from the purchasing, the cooking and the consumption of food. This is an invaluable and unquestionable tool that should be used in order to decrease the incidence of Hemolytic Uremic Syndrome (HUS) in our country. The State, the enterprise owners, and the consumers should take responsibility for this: the State should guarantee the citizens' access to safe food products through an adequate legislation and a mechanism for it to be controlled and obeyed; the enterprise owners should obey the current regulations and provide their employees with education about the importance of these regulations; and the consumers should take responsibility for how they handle food...

In the last years, infection associated with Shiga toxin-producing Escherichia coli (STEC) and subsequent Hemolitic-Uremic Syndrome (HUS) became relevant as a public health since it was considered as one of the most important emergent patogen present in the food contaminated by cattle feces. STEC infection may be asymptomatic or begins with a watery diarrhea that may or may not progress to bloody diarrhea (hemorrhagic colitis) and HUS. In Argentina, HUS is the most common pediatric cause of acute renal insufficiency and the second cause of chronic renal failure...

BACKGROUND: Thrombotic microangiopathy (TM) is a disorder characterized by fibrin formation and platelet aggregation in the small arteries and capillaries. Two main clinical settings are reported in association with this disorder: hemolitic uremic syndrome (HUS) and thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura (TTP). Both conditions share common findings such as microangiopathic anemia and thrombocytopenia. HUS is more frequent in children and is mainly characterized by renal symptoms, whereas PTT is dominated by neurologic abnormalities...

Acute tubulointerstitial nephritis is associated with a variety of causes, such as drug interaction, and infectious or immunological mechanisms. We describe a patient who suffered from sepsis, septic shock, disseminated intravascular coagulation(DIC), hepatic failure and renal failure after receiving a bite from her house cat. The causes of her acute renal failure were initially thought to be due to circulatory failure with hypotensive shock, decrease in renal blood flow with fibrin formation by DIC, or microangiopathy such as hemolitic uremic syndrome...

Because of the poor response of pancreatic cancer to conventional therapy, the authors performed a phase II pilot study to evaluate whether beta-interferon and retinoids, added to active chemotherapeutic agents, could increase response rate and survival in a group of patients who had metastatic disease. Twenty-three chemotherapy-naive patients were treated as follows: epirubicin, 60 mg/m2, and mitomycin C, 10 mg/m2, intravenously on day 1; folinic acid, 200 mg/m2, and 5-fluorouracil (5-FU), 370 mg/m2, intravenously for 5 consecutive days...
