BACKGROUND: Due to limited numbers of palliative care specialists and/or resources, accessing palliative care remains limited in many low and middle-income countries. Data science methods, such as rule-based algorithms and text mining, have potential to improve palliative care by facilitating analysis of electronic healthcare records. This study aimed to develop and evaluate a rule-based algorithm for identifying cancer patients who may benefit from palliative care based on the Thai version of the Supportive and Palliative Care Indicators for a Low-Income Setting (SPICT-LIS) criteria...

Patients who have received bariatric surgery have specific and complex dental needs. After surgery, nutrient deficiencies, osteoporosis, gastroesophageal reflux, and changes to the oral cavity may be seen, and erosion, caries, wear, xerostomia, hypersensitivity, and changes to the salivary buffering capacity may occur. In addition, patients are advised to ingest smaller, more frequent, meals throughout the day, and the oral condition may decline rapidly after surgery. Without oversight, this accelerated decline may even necessitate complete mouth rehabilitation postoperatively...

BACKGROUND: To retrospectively access outcome, adverse events and prognostic factors in oropharyngeal carcinoma (OPC) patients treated with intensity-modulated radiotherapy (IMRT). METHODS: Ninety-eight OPC patients were treated between 2000 and 2015. Thirty-three patients received definitive and 65 adjuvant radiotherapy. Seventy-one percent had simultaneous chemotherapy. Patients were systematically followed up (mean 114 months, range 19-197 months). Statistical analysis used Kaplan-Meier method, Cox regression analysis, and log-rank test...

STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM: Reduced saliva production or changes in the quality of saliva are major causes of xerostomia as a perceptual disease. PURPOSE: This study aimed to measure validity and reliability of the Persian version of the xerostomia inventory (XI) questionnaire. MATERIALS AND METHOD: This cross-sectional study was performed in Kerman in 2021. The sample size for this study was 100 people. To test the discriminant validity of XI, 50 healthy people (control group) and 50 people undergoing or recovering from laryngeal radiation (xerostomia group) were chosen...

Head and neck cancer is a common cancer worldwide. Radiotherapy has an essential role in the treatment of head and neck cancers. After irradiation, early effects of reduced saliva flow and hampered water secretion are seen, along with cell loss and a decline in amylase production. Currently, there is no curative treatment for radiation-induced hyposalivation/xerostomia. This study aimed to develop and optimize a validated manufacturing process for salivary gland organoid cells containing stem/progenitor cells using salivary gland patient biopsies as a starting material...

Data on oral lesions of coronavirus disease (COVID-19) are conflicting, and there are few evidence-based data on oral lesions directly caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2). The aim of this case series and literature review is to determine the prevalence of oral lesions associated with COVID-19 in outpatients and identify oral manifestations that are likely associated with COVID-19. We present 15 patients that came for their first specialist examination to the Oral Medicine Outpatient Clinic, Dental Clinic, Split, Croatia between November 2020 and January 2024...

OBJECTIVE: Leveraging the Manhattan Lupus Surveillance Program (MLSP), a population-based registry of cases of systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) and related diseases, we investigated the proportion of SLE with concomitant rheumatic diseases, including Sjögren's disease (SjD), antiphospholipid syndrome (APLS), and fibromyalgia (FM), as well as the prevalence of autoantibodies in SLE by sex and race/ethnicity. METHODS: Prevalent SLE cases fulfilled one of three sets of classification criteria...

We compared dynamic trajectory radiotherapy (DTRT) to state-of-the-art volumetric modulated arc therapy (VMAT) for 46 head and neck cancer cases. DTRT had lower dose to salivary glands and swallowing structure, resulting in lower predicted xerostomia and dysphagia compared to VMAT. DTRT is deliverable on C-arm linacs with high dosimetric accuracy.

BACKGROUND: People with cancer frequently experience severe and distressing symptoms associated with cancer and its treatments. Predicting symptoms in patients with cancer continues to be a significant challenge for both clinicians and researchers. The rapid evolution of machine learning (ML) highlights the need for a current systematic review to improve cancer symptom prediction. OBJECTIVE: This systematic review aims to synthesize the literature that has used ML algorithms to predict the development of cancer symptoms and to identify the predictors of these symptoms...

Sjögren's syndrome (SjS) is the most common connective tissue disease with a prevalence of 1:200. Predominantly affecting women, SjS is associated with destruction of the exocrine glands, leading to xerophthalmia and xerostomia. In over 50% of patients, there are also extraglandular manifestations, leading to multiple organ manifestations including polyneuropathies and interstitial lung disease as well as symptoms such as fatigue and arthralgia. Diagnostic procedures include biomarkers, in particular anti-SS-A/Ro antibodies, histology of salivary glands, and salivary gland sonography...

BACKGROUND: Pain associated with cancer is one of the greatest causes of reduced quality of life in patients. Acupuncture is one of the treatments used to address this issue, with the great advantage of having little or no side effects, especially when compared with pharmacological pain-killers. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this systematic review and meta-analysis was to evaluate the current evidence regarding the efficacy of acupuncture for cancer pain. SEARCH STRATEGY: Six electronic databases (PubMed, EBSCO, Cochrane Library, Scielo, b-On and Scopus) were searched for relevant articles about pain relief in cancer patients from their beginning until 2022 using MeSH terms such as "acupuncture," "electroacupuncture," "ear acupuncture," "acupuncture analgesia," ''oncological pain," and "cancer pain...

INTRODUCTION AND IMPORTANCE: Allgrove syndrome (AS) (AAA syndrome) is a rare autosomal recessive disease caused by mutations in the AAAS gene located on chromosome 12q13. The AAAS gene encodes for the ALADIN protein (alacrima, achalasia, adrenal insufficiency, neurologic disorder). AS can manifest with a plethora of symptoms. Early recognition of the syndrome remains challenging due to its rarity and progressive nature. This report presents an unusual case of triple-A syndrome (TAS) with concurrent neuromuscular manifestations...

OBJECTIVES: Epidemiological data regarding the evolution of problems related to mastication and swallowing with age are lacking. This study aims to (i) describe changes in oral function with age, using data from a large French population, (ii) validate online, self-report uses of an ICF questionnaire in older persons, and (iii) assess whether impairment is related to avoidance of certain foods, xerostomia, body mass index (BMI) and oral health related quality of life (OHRQoL). METHODS: Volunteers aged ≥18 years with internet access completed a series of questionnaires on sociodemographic, anthropometric and oral health characteristics (oral function, Xerostomia Index (XI), OHRQoL, reasons for avoidance of certain food)...
