Idiopathic restrictive cardiomyopathy (IRC) is a rare condition characterized by reduced ventricular compliance. Children with IRC have poor outcomes with most patients proceeding to cardiac transplantation. We sought to analyze our institutional experience and assess contemporary outcomes for children with IRC. We reviewed the medical record for patients (<21 years old) evaluated for a primary diagnosis of IRC between 1975 and 2013 at our institution. Demographic, clinical, echocardiographic, and catheterization data were abstracted...

Area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AROC) is commonly used to choose a biomechanical metric from which to construct an injury risk curve (IRC). However, AROC may not handle censored datasets adequately. Survival analysis creates robust estimates of IRCs which accommodate censored data. We present an observation-adjusted ROC (oaROC) which uses the survival-based IRC to estimate the AROC. We verified and evaluated this method using simulated datasets of different censoring statuses and sample sizes...

The notable advances obtained by computational (bio)chemistry provided its widespread use in many areas of science, in particular, in the study of reaction mechanisms. These studies involve a huge number of complex calculations, which are often carried out using the Gaussian suite of programs. The preparation of input files and the analysis of the output files are not easy tasks and often involve laborious and complex steps. Taking this into account, we developed molUP: a VMD plugin that offers a complete set of tools that enhance the preparation of QM and ONIOM (QM/MM, QM/QM, and QM/QM/MM) calculations...

During their late pulsating phase, AGB stars expel most of their mass in the form of massive dusty envelopes, an event that largely controls the composition of interstellar matter. The envelopes, however, are distant and opaque to visible and NIR radiation: their structure remains poorly known and the mass-loss process poorly understood. Millimeter-wave interferometry, which combines the advantages of longer wavelength, high angular resolution and very high spectral resolution is the optimal investigative tool for this purpose...

Cyclopropyl cyanide and other simple nitriles detected in Titan's atmosphere could be precursors leading to the formation of organic macromolecules in the atmosphere of Saturn's largest satellite. Proposing a thermodynamically possible mechanism that explains their formation and supports experimental results represents a difficult challenge. Experiments done in the Atomic and Molecular Physics Laboratory at the University of Trento (AMPL) have studied the ion-molecule reaction between cyclopropyl cyanide and its protonated form, with reaction products being characterized by mass spectrometry...

Introduction: Infrared photocoagulation (IRC) was introduced as a mainstay procedure for treatment of hemorrhoids. The present study aimed to compare the clinical efficacy of IRC compared to closed hemorrhoidectomy. Methods: Forty patients suffering grade-3 hemorrhoid that referred to the surgery clinic at Imam Hossein hospital in Tehran in 2013 were randomly assigned to groups treated with the IRC modality or Ferguson's closed hemorrhoidectomy method. The patients in the 2 groups were followed-up for the first 24 hours after surgery and 8 weeks later...

In intermediate-risk cytogenetic acute myeloid leukemia (IRC-AML) patients, novel biomarkers to guide post-remission therapy are needed. We analyzed with high-density arrays 40 IRC-AML patients who received a non-allogeneic hematopoietic stem-cell transplantation-based post-remission therapy, and identified a signature that correlated with early relapse. Subsequently, we analyzed selected 187 genes in 49 additional IRC-AML patients by RT-PCR. BAALC, MN1, SPARC and HOPX overexpression correlated to refractoriness...

In this study the operational extraction variables to obtain higher yields of inulin from Jerusalem artichoke tubers (JAT), as well as the optimal conditions to obtain a stable and dispersible powdered product by either spray or freeze drying, were studied. With this purpose, the powder yield, moisture content, water activity and flowability or products obtained by different experimental conditions were analyzed. Inulin rich carbohydrates (IRC) extraction was performed from lyophilized and ground tubers employing distilled hot water as solvent...

Background: Immune checkpoint inhibitors are successfully introduced as anticancer treatment. However, they may induce severe immune-related adverse events (irAEs). One of the most frequent irAEs is diarrhoea. The main objective of this study was to analyse symptoms (ie, grade of diarrhoea), endoscopic and histological features and response to management in immune checkpoint inhibition-related colitis (IRC). Patients and methods: We retrospectively analysed patients who developed diarrhoea on checkpoint inhibition and therefore underwent an endoscopy and/or were treated with corticosteroids...

We hypothesized that radiation-induced rescue effect (RIRE) shared similar mechanisms with 'metabolic cooperation', in which nutrient-deprived cancer cells prompted normal cells to provide nutrients. Our data demonstrated that X-ray irradiation induced autophagy in HeLa cells, which could last at least 18 h, and proved that the irradiated cells (IRCs) resorted to breaking down their own intracellular components to supply the molecules required for cell-repair enhancement (e.g. to activate the NF-κB pathway) in the absence of support from bystander unirradiated cells (UICs)...

The current report seeks to validate the existence of a post-transition state bifurcation in the Lewis acid-catalysed (4 + 3)-cycloaddition of butadiene and α-methoxy acrolein. Cycloaddition transition state (TS) structures are shown by intrinsic reaction coordinate (IRC) and potential energy surface (PES) scan calculations to connect directly to both (4 + 3)- and (4 + 2)-products. A second TS, a 1,2-sigmatropic shift which interconverts the products, was also located. Implicit solvent is observed to have a substantial effect of the course of the reaction, with the minimum energy path from the gas phase TS leading to (4 + 2)-product whereas the DCM solvent phase TS leads to (4 + 3)-product...

BACKGROUND: Nanoparticle albumin-bound (nab)-paclitaxel was developed to improve paclitaxel solubility and does not need premedication to avoid infusion-related reactions associated with solvent-based (sb)-paclitaxel. We conducted a phase II trial to investigate the efficacy and safety of nab-paclitaxel plus ramucirumab combination therapy for previously treated advanced gastric cancer. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Patients with unresectable advanced gastric cancer refractory to first-line chemotherapy were administered nab-paclitaxel 100 mg/m2 intravenously on days 1, 8 and 15, plus ramucirumab 8 mg/kg intravenously on days 1 and 15 of a 28-day cycle...

Enzyme-induced articular cartilage degeneration resembling osteoarthritis was evaluated using a newly defined acoustic parameter, the "averaged magnitude ratio" (AMR), which has been suggested as an indicator of articular cartilage degeneration. In vitro experiments were conducted on porcine cartilage samples digested with trypsin for 2 h (n = 10) and 4 h (n = 13) and healthy control samples (n = 13). AMR was determined with 15- and 25-MHz ultrasound, and the integrated reflection coefficient (IRC) and apparent integrated backscattering coefficient (AIB) were also calculated for comparison...

The analysis of the electronic-structure changes along IRC paths for double-proton-transfer reactions in the formamide dimer (R1), formamide-thioformamide system (R2), and the thioformamide dimer (R3) was performed based on the extended-transition-state natural orbitals for chemical valence (ETS-NOCV) partitioning of the reaction force, considering the intra-fragments strain and the inter-fragments interaction terms, and further-the electrostatic, Pauli-repulsion and orbital interaction components, with the latter being decomposed into the NOCV components...

A methodology to analyze a trajectory on-the-fly (TOF) based on a global reaction route map consisting of intrinsic reaction coordinate (IRC) pathways is proposed. By using the distance functions in the configurational space, the location of each point on the trajectories is detected, providing a dynamical picture that the molecular system goes over several minima and transition states in the reaction path network. In its application to structural transformations of an Au5 cluster, a variety of reaction routes are obtained, and the hopping from one IRC to another IRC (IRC-jump) is analyzed...

This study is intended to clarify in detail the tautomeric transformations of the wobble (w) G*·2AP(w) and A·2AP(w) nucleobase mispairs involving 2-aminopurine (2AP) into the Watson-Crick (WC) G·2AP(WC) and A*·2AP(WC) base mispairs (asterisks denote mutagenic tautomers of the DNA bases), respectively, by quantum-mechanical methods and Bader's Quantum Theory of Atoms in Molecules. Our previously reported methodology has been used, which allows the evolution of the physico-chemical parameters to be tracked along the entire internal reaction coordinate (IRC), not exclusively in the stationary states of these reactions...
