INTRODUCTION: Breast cancer is the most common type or cancer in women with an incidence of about 720,000 cases per year and a mortality between 6 and 23 per 100,000, what it means a very important global health problem. METHOD: Sistematic review in the following databases: PubMed, SciELO, Cochrane Plus, Medline, Cuiden and Embase. The search was limited to English and Spanish languages, between 2005 and 2015 and human studies. RESULTS: All studies are observational by the characteristics of the studied pathology...

OBJECTIVE: To examine the quality of evidence and the variability in the off-label use of intravitreal bevacizumab for retinopathy of prematurity (ROP). METHODS: A wide review of the literature was performed using Pubmed, Medline, and Cochrane database, using the words vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), retinopathy of prematurity, treatment and bevacizumab. RESULTS: Case reports, case series, reviews, one sistematic review and one randomized controlled trial were found on the use of intravitreal bevacizumab in severe ROP, as monotherapy or combined with láser and/or vitrectomy...

INTRODUCTION: Despite of benefits of bariatric surgery for obesity treatment, the procedure may be related to some complications. AIM: Analyze studies to address the relation between nephrolithiasis and bariatric surgery. METHODS: Ten papers about this theme were selected from 2005-2013 in Pubmed, describing the relation of nephrolithiasis or their risk factors with several types of bariatric surgery. RESULTS: Retrospective studies with minimal follow-up of three years demonstrated 7,65% in surgery patients and 4,63% non-surgery with nephrolithiasis (p<0,05)...

INTRODUCTION: Studies on bioavailability are part of the clinical development of drugs for oral use in order to identify potential drug-food interactions. For oral antitumor drugs, their clinical importance is currently recognized although regrettably the information available presents variability concerning the scientific evidence. OBJECTIVES: To review the available scientific evidence about oral anti-tumor medications and establish the recommendations for their administration with foods...

Carlos Renato Moreira Maia, Luis Augusto Rohde
Anxiety disorders are very prevalent in children and adolescents, causing serious impairments. The pharmacological treatment for these disorders is not much investigated in children and adolescents. Thus, there is no consensus about its indication. The present study aims to check the efficacy and tolerability of drugs used for the treatment of anxiety disorders in children and adolescents in the context of evidence based medicine. A systematic literature review was carried out in the main databases. In addition, authors were contacted...

The evolution of medical thought from the precientific phase during Renaissance toward the beginning of scientific phase in the XVII Century is reviewed. This phase was dominated by the great event of the discovery of blood circulation. The irradiation of this doctrine was parallel to that of Copernican theory. Harvey, the starter of experimental method in medicine, graduated at the University of Padua, where previously studied Copernicus. There he was influenced by Galileo's teaching, from whom adopted the quantitative focussing for his physiological research...

Gastrointestinal stromal tumors show an increasing incidence. Immunohistochemistry is mandatory to make differential diagnosis with other mesenchimal tumors. We retrospectively reviewed 15 primary stomach GISTs operated during the last decade. Gastroscopy, Ultrasonography and CT scan were employed to obtain the diagnosis. Tumor size ranged from 1.5 to 30 cm in diameter. Treatment consisted of curative surgical resection without sistematic lymph node dissection. A wedge resection was sufficient in 8 cases. In 2 patients a distal subtotal gastrectomy was required and in 1 a total enlarged gastrectomy with pancreaticosplenectomy was performed...

The authors realized a retrospective clinical-statistical study about 121 cases of acute myocardial infarction (AMI), treated in the Department of general medicine with a pharmacological association of Lysine acetylsalicylate--Erythrityl tetranitrate--Papaverine hydrochloride, with the purpose of obtaining a vasodilatation on coronary arteries and a platelet antiaggregation, in the light of the new etiopathogenetic views about the prolonged coronary spasm and the platelet aggregation, in some cases of myocardial infarction with or without thrombosis...

Diabetes insipidus and its' treatment, are revised. New pathogenic concepts stressing the roll of osmoreceptors in its' etiological causes are explained. In the diagnosis, great importance is given to recently sistematized proof by Miller-Moses. This allows, to evaluate the grade of deficiency in vasopressin as well as new therapeutic possibilities, using differents drugs other from the classical "oily" solution of vasopressin.

Authors present a child three years old with an idiopathic left anterior hemiblock. Causes of left anterior hemiblock in children are reviewed, and it is concluded that although a left anterior hemiblock justifies a thorough non-invasive cardiologic and sistematic study and long-term follow-up, sometimes it may be the expression of an anatomic and/or physiologic variant.
