Rabies is a deadly neurotropic viral infection but is preventable through vaccination. Its impact on human and animal health is often devastating. Despite advances in research and control of this disease, along with an effective vaccine, rabies continues to be a lingering threat in many parts of the world. Its high incidence reinforces the constant need to address it with scientific and public health measures. In this review article, we will explore the most important characteristics of the disease, its distribution, symptoms, prevention methods, and the global efforts that have been made to eradicate this deadly disease...

BACKGROUND: Kawasaki disease is a systemic vasculitis that affects small and medium-sized vessels, primarily the coronary arteries. First-line treatment includes intravenous immunoglobulin (IVIG) and acetylsalicylic acid; however, 20% do not respond adequately despite treatment. We describe a case treated with etanercept after initial IVIG failure, showing a good response. CASE REPORT: A 5-year-old female was diagnosed with classic Kawasaki disease. Echocardiography and angiotomography revealed giant and fusiform aneurysms in the coronary arteries...

Inflammatory pseudotumor is a rare lesion, especially at the level of the central nervous system. Its etiology is unknown and the most accepted hypothesis is that it is the consequence of an exaggerated immune response. We present the clinical case of a young Senegalese male, with a history of epilepsy secondary to severe cranioencephalic trauma in childhood, who presented with new epileptic seizures. Imaging tests showed a lesion in the anterior fossa intimately attached to the meninges, so the initial diagnosis was meningioma...

Immunoglobulin G4-related disease (IgG4-RD) comprises a group of immune-mediated diseases that, until recently, were considered separate entities. These entities have a similar clinical presentation, serological findings, and pathogenesis, so they are currently considered a single multisystemic disease. The common characteristic is the infiltration of involved tissues by plasma cells and lymphocytes that are positive for IgG4. Three major criteria have been proposed for the diagnosis of IgG4-RD: clinical, laboratory, and histological...

INTRODUCTION: Multifocal motor neuropathy (MMN) is a chronic progressive immune-mediated neuropathy, predominantly involving upper limbs asymmetrically with electrophysiologic evidence of motor conduction block. The treatment of choice is immunoglobulin (Ig). Nevertheless, some patients may become resistant to treatment. We describe a patient with history of MMN who became resistant to gammaglobulin treatment but markedly improved using ultra-high doses of intravenous immunoglobulin. CASE REPORT: A 36-year-old woman with diagnosis of MMN...

BACKGROUND: breast milk is the ideal food for newborns and infants, but there are factors that can prevent the practice of breastfeeding. Human milk banks (BLH) are a strategy to increase breastfeeding coverage; the donated milk is subjected to Holder pasteurization to guarantee its innocuousness, undergoing large changes in temperature and a decrease in the concentrations of biocomponents such as Immunoglobulin A (IgA) and lactoferrin (LF). This article describes the results of recent studies on the impact of Holder pasteurization on IgA and LF in human milk...

Neuroimmunology is a discipline that increasingly broadens its horizons in the understanding of neurological diseases. At the same time, and in front of the pathophysiological links of neurological diseases and immunology, specific diagnostic and therapeutic approaches have been proposed. Despite the important advances in this discipline, there are multiple dilemmas that concern and filter into clinical practice. This article presents 15 controversies and a discussion about them, which are built with the most up-to-date evidence available...

INTRODUCTION: Measurement of the exhaled nitric oxide fraction (FeNO) has been proposed as an indirect and non-invasive method to detect eosinophilic airway inflammation. Allergic rhinitis (AR) is frequently associated with high levels of FeNO. Allergic sensitization can contribute to the recruitment of eosinophils in the airway and the consequent increase in FeNO. OBJECTIVE: To correlate FeNO values with inflammatory and atopic sensitization biomarkers in patients with AR...

INTRODUCTION: Hypogammaglobulinemia in the first months after allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) is common in paediatric patients. During this phase, replacement therapy with human immunoglobulin must be administered parenterally to prevent infections. In some cases, this hypogammaglobulinemia persists over time, which forces further treatment when the patient is usually no longer a carrier of a central line, making them ideal candidates for subcutaneous replacement therapy...

Proper communication between natural killer cells and the human leukocyte antigens of the embryonic trophoblast at the maternal-fetal interface during pregnancy is essential for successful reproduction. However, specific combinations of embryonic human leukocyte antigen-C with killer immunoglobulin-like receptors on decidual natural killer cells (the immunological code of pregnancy) can be associated with obstetric morbidity and pregnancy loss. This article presents an updated review of the mechanisms underlying the interaction between embryonic human leukocyte antigen-C and maternal killer immunoglobulin-like receptors and their relevance to the physiology and pathophysiology of human reproduction...
