INTRODUCTION AND OBJECTIVES: To compare gonad doses with and without a gonad protector and to optimize the use of gonadal protectors in infants thorax radiography. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Two pediatric anthropomorphic phantoms are used: an X-ray system for KXO-50SS/DRX-3724HD, and a digital radiography system for CALNEO Smart C12, with and without a gonad protector during infants thorax radiography. A real time skin dosimeter is placed on the X-ray system, and a real time skin dosimeter is inserted on the front side of the mammary gland, the front and back sides of the true pelvis level, and on the ovaries and testes...

INTRODUCTION: The factors and patterns associated with antibiotic consumption in infants are unclear. Our aim was to assess the cumulative incidence of antibiotic consumption from birth to 16 months and identify factors associated with antibiotic consumption among infants aged 4-16 months. MATERIAL AND METHODS: We conducted a cross-sectional study in 2016 in a sample of 18 882 women from Galicia, Spain, who had given birth to a live child between September 1, 2015 and August 31, 2016...

UNLABELLED: Anemia (An) is a public health problem in South America, with iron deficiency (ID) as the main cause. In high-altitude cities, hypobaric hypoxia causes an increase in hemoglobin (Hb) levels in residents. For the diagnosis of An, Hb is measured, which is modified after erythrocyte indices (EI) measurements. There is evidence that there is an overestimation of the prevalence of An at high altitudes. OBJECTIVE: To correlate serum ferritin (SF) with Hb and EI, and to determine the Hb cut-off point for predicting ID in 6-month-old infants at 3400 m of altitude...

Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) infection is a frequent cause of morbidity and mortality in children. Recently, great advances have been made in the development of new monoclonal antibodies and vaccines thanks to the recognition of the structural conformation of virus proteins. The objective of this study was to review the advances related to the prevention of RSV infection in the first 6 months of life. Advances in structural biology have shown that the RSV fusion protein (F-Protein) in its prefusion state (Pre-F) is an excellent antigen for developing monoclonal antibodies and vaccines to prevent respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) infections...

The AEP Immunization Calendar for 2024, with its immunization recommendations for pregnant women, children and adolescents residing in Spain, marks the 25th edition since the first one was introduced in 1995, being annual since 2003, as a vaccination calendar, and since 2023 as immunization schedule due to the inclusion of a monoclonal antibody for the prevention of RSV disease. Novelties for this year include the following: The rest of the recommendations from the previous calendar remain unchanged.

Here we describe the case of a 2-month-old infant who consulted several times due to excessive crying, initially interpreted as having a gastrointestinal cause. Since the symptom persisted, a fracture was suspected due to its association with mobilization of the limbs and palpation of a mass on the anterior aspect of the right tibia. X-rays showed diaphyseal polyostotic involvement and lesions compatible with cortical involvement of long bones. Caffey-De Toni-Silverman syndrome was diagnosed and treatment with nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs was initiated, resulting in symptom remission...

UNLABELLED: Giant Juvenile Xanthogranuloma (GJXG) corresponds to an infrequent variant of Juvenile Xantho- granuloma (JXG) and is characterized by a lesion larger than 2 cm in diameter. It usually presents as a plaque but infrequently, presents as an ulcerated nodule. OBJECTIVE: To report two cases of atypical presentation of GJXG, highlighting the importance of considering them in the differential diagnosis of large, ulcerated tumors in infants. BACKGROUND: Urinary tract infection (UTI) is infants' most common serious bacterial infection. This study aimed to investigate the reliability of urianalysis (UA) to predict UTI, to specify the colony forming units (CFU)/ml threshold for diagnosis, and to identify variables that help suspect bacteremia in infants under 3 months with UTI. METHODS: We reviewed clinical records of children under 3 months hospitalized for a fever without source and recorded age, sex, days of fever pre-consultation, temperature and severity at admission, discharge diagnoses, laboratory tests, and treatments...

BACKGROUND: Being overweight affects millions of infants and preschoolers in the world, affecting their quality and life expectancy. Exposure to day care centers may play an important role in preventing unhealthy weight (UW). OBJECTIVE: To point out the prevalence and association of day care exposure and other factors associated with UW in infants and preschoolers. METHODS: An analytical cross-sectional study was carried out. Infant population aged 6-47 months without comorbidities that compromised their nutritional status were included, and those with formal childcare different from the selected day care were excluded...

BACKGROUND: Childhood obesity is a multifactorial disease. Most of these factors start to develop before birth and worsen throughout life. Therefore, prevention efforts should begin in the first 1000 days of life. This study aimed to quantify published studies on risk factors according to the Six-Cs model of childhood obesity (cell, child, clan, culture, community, and country) and determine which of them have been related to anthropometric indicators of overweight or obesity in children under 2 years of age in Mexico...

This article aims to understand the implications of the COVID-19 pandemic on breastfeeding and health promotion actions within primary care from the perception of breastfeeding women. This qualitative study was developed with 24 women who breastfed during the first year of the pandemic. Data were analyzed using Content Analysis and interpreted in the light of the Interactive Breastfeeding Theory (IBT). The pandemic affected the vulnerability of the mental health of breastfeeding women, entailed difficulties for the continuity of breastfeeding and early insertion of formulas, impacted COVID-19 preventive measures in breastfeeding, and produced changes in the work of breastfeeding women...
