hyperthyreosis central

Dorota Szyska-Skrobot, Aldona Kowalska, Zygmunt Jamrozik
The impact of thyroid hormones upon the proper function of central nervous system has been known for many years. The neurological symptoms and psychiatric disturbances may occur both in case of hypo- as well as hyperthyreosis. The encephalopathy Hashimoto (EH) described in this paper is a rare illness which occurs in case of patients suffering from the autoimmunological thyroid disease and increased level of antibodies in serum without any connections to the thyroid function. It is characterised by a variety of neurological symptoms and psychotic disturbances, acute state, high re-occurrence and good reaction to glicocorticosteroid treatment...

67 year old patient with chronic heart failure and persistent atrial fibrillation had overdosed glycosides for several months. The symptoms of gastrointestinal system and nervous system appeared after long term therapy with toxic doses of glycosides. Originally depression was diagnosed based on the central nervous system disturbances. Even though overdose of glycosides was diagnosed the blood serum glycoside level was within the therapeutic limits. Based on the precise analysis of the data, it was concluded that the reason for normal blood serum glycoside level in this case was coexisting hyperthyreosis...

The impedance-cardiography renders possible the recognition of central haemodynamic parameters on an unbloody way. For the judgment of the method 18 female patients with hyperthyreosis were examined before and during the thyreostatic treatment. At the same time the systolic time intervals were estimated and the results from the two methods were compared. Apart from the abbreviation of PEP and the decrease of the contractility index PEP/LVET the increase of the cardiac index and the reduction of the resistance index indicate the thyreotoxic effect on the cardiovascular system...

In literature a big number of central and peripheral parameters for the diagnosis and control of therapeutical measures in diseases of human thyroid gland is described. That means, that none of the methods used has a sufficient weight. The enzymatic estimation of pyruvate and lactate reflect the peripheral effect of the hormones of thyroid gland. The pyruvate and lactate levels differ in the several groups of patients with euthyreosis, hypothyreosis, hyperthyreosis and euthyreotic goitre. Between these all groups the lactate/pyruvate ratio showed highly significant differences...

In a well-defined area with a centralized endocrinologic and nuclear medicine care the change of manifestation of hyperthyreosis was studied by complete inquiry before and during goiter prophylaxis. The area is known as an iodine deficiency one with endemic goiter (glacial downstream). In connection of time of completing alimentary iodine the dates show an increase of hyperthyreoidism by factor 1.6 in 1985 and by factor 3 in 1987. The increase concerns both Graves' disease and Plummer's disease. Methodological problems of the investigations are discussed...
