Lactococcus lactis subsp. lactis CRL 1584 isolated from a bullfrog hatchery produces a bacteriocin that inhibits both indigenous Citrobacter freundii (a Red-Leg Syndrome related pathogen) and Lactobacillus plantarum, and Listeria monocytogenes as well. Considering that probiotics requires high cell densities and/or bacteriocin concentrations, the effect of the temperature on L. lactis growth and bacteriocin production was evaluated to find the optimal conditions. Thus, the growth rate was maximal at 36 °C, whereas the highest biomass and bacteriocin activity was achieved between 20 and 30 °C and 20-25 °C, respectively...

OBJECTIVE: Little is known about the natural changes in parathyroid function after successful parathyroid surgery for primary hyperparathyroidism. The association of intact parathyroid hormone (iPTH) and calcium (Ca) with "temporary hypoparathyroidism" and "hungry bone syndrome" (HBS) was evaluated. DESIGN: Potential risk factors for temporary hypoparathyroidism and HBS were evaluated by taking blood samples before surgery, intra-operatively, at postoperative day (POD) 1, at POD 5 to 7, in postoperative week (POW) 8 and in postoperative month (POM) 6...

OBJECTIVE: Prolonged hypocalcaemia but normal intact parathyroid hormone (iPTH) levels after surgery for primary hyperparathyroidism (PHPT) are referred to as "hungry bone syndrome" (HBS). The aim was to evaluate preoperative risk factors for HBS with a focus on the impact of 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25(OH)D) deficiency. DESIGN: Patients having undergone initial successful surgery for sporadic PHPT within 6 years were considered for retrospective analysis. METHODS: A total of 385 patients were evaluated, of whom 33 (8...

Follicular thyroid carcinomas (FTCs) are the second most common malignant neoplasia of the thyroid and in general its prognosis is quite favorable. However, the occurrence of metastases or non-responsiveness to radioiodine therapy worsens the prognosis considerably. We evaluated immunohistochemically the expression of hypoxia-associated proteins by hypoxia-induced factor 1α (HIF-1α), the stroma-remodeling marker Tenascin C, as well as markers for the epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT), namely E-cadherin and slug in a series of 59 sporadic FTCs...

OBJECTIVE: Normal or elevated 24-hour urinary calcium (Ca) excretion is a diagnostic marker in primary hyperparathyroidism (PHPT). It is used to distinguish familial hypocalciuric hypercalcaemia (FHH) from PHPT by calculating the Ca/creatinine clearance ratio (CCCR). The variance of CCCR in patients with PHPT is considerable. The aim of this study was to analyse the parameters affecting CCCR in patients with PHPT. DESIGN: The data were collected prospectively. Patients with sporadic PHPT undergoing successful surgery were included in a retrospective analysis...

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to demonstrate the high number of kidney stones in primary hyperparathyroidism (PHPT) and the low number of in fact "asymptomatic" patients. METHODS: Forty patients with PHPT (28 female, 12 male; median age 58 (range 33-80) years; interquartile range 17 years [51-68]) without known symptoms of kidney stones prospectively underwent multidetector computed tomography (MDCT) and ultrasound (US) examinations of the urinary tract prior to parathyroid surgery...

Medullary carcinoma (MTC) is an aggressive tumour that derives from the thyroid parafollicular calcitonin-secreting cells (C cells). Lymph node metastasis may occur early in disease pathogenesis and is one of the most important negative prognostic parameters. Surgery is the only curative therapy while chemotherapeutic options are limited. Neuroendocrine differentiated C cells may express somatostatin receptors (SSTR), which have a wide range of biological actions including inhibitory effects on cell survival and angiogenesis and antiproliferative effects on cancer cell lines...

BACKGROUND: In terms of morbidity, prophylactic central neck dissection (CND; level 6) in potentially malignant thyroid disease is discussed controversially. The rates of (transient and permanent) hypoparathyroidism and palsy of the recurrent laryngeal nerve (RLN) after "first-step" (FS-)CND are analyzed in this study. METHODS: Bilateral and unilateral FSCND, i.e., lymph node dissection along the RLN before (total) thyroidectomy, was performed bilaterally in 68 (group 1) and unilaterally in 44 patients (group 2), respectively...

OBJECTIVE: The effects of thiazide medication in patients with primary hyperparathyroidism (PHPT) have so far not been elucidated. The aim of this study was to analyse the extent to which the administration of thiazides may influence biochemical parameters and therefore the diagnosis of PHPT in a large cohort of patients. DESIGN AND PATIENTS: The biochemical parameters of 1066 patients with PHPT were analysed, and drug history was documented. Calcium (Ca)/creatinine clearance ratio (CCCR) was calculated...

Net carbon sinks capable of avoiding dangerous perturbation of the climate system and preventing ocean acidification have been identified, but they are likely to be limited by resource constraints (Nature 463:747-756, 2010). Land scarcity already creates tension between food security and bioenergy production, and this competition is likely to intensify as populations and the effects of climate change expand. Despite research into microalgae as a next-generation energy source, the land-sparing consequences of alternative sources of livestock feed have been overlooked...

BACKGROUND: Fludarabine-based chemoimmunotherapy with rituximab is frequently used in patients with indolent and mantle-cell lymphomas who relapse after alkylating chemotherapy. We aimed to compare the efficacy and safety of rituximab with bendamustine or fludarabine in patients with relapsed, indolent, non-Hodgkin lymphoma and mantle-cell lymphoma. METHODS: For this randomised, non-inferiority, open-label, phase 3 trial, we recruited patients from 55 centres in Germany, who were subsequently randomised centrally according to prespecified randomisation lists with permuted blocks of randomly variable block size to rituximab (375 mg/m(2), day 1) plus either bendamustine (90 mg/m(2), days 1 and 2) or fludarabine (25 mg/m(2), days 1-3) every 28 days for a maximum of six 28-day cycles...

BACKGROUND: Adherence to medication and lifestyle interventions are essential keys for the management of hypertension. In this respect, a structured educational program for hypertensive patients has got remarkable merits (herz.leben). In order to determine the isolated effect of participation in the educational program, neglecting the possible impact of more intense care, this prospective multicenter randomized controlled study was designed (NCT00453037). METHODS: A total of 256 patients in 13 centers were enrolled and randomly assigned to 2 groups (G)...
