The dragon fruit is native of Mexico, and Puebla is the third-largest producing state (SIAP 2023). In June 2023, field sampling was conducted in El Paraíso, Atlixco (18° 49' 5.275" N, 98° 26' 52.353" W), Puebla, Mexico. The mean temperature and relative humidity were 20 °C and 75% for seven consecutive days. Dragon fruits cv. 'Delight' close to harvest with gray mold symptoms were found in a commercial area of 2 ha, with an incidence of 35 to 40% and an estimated severity of 75% on infected fruit...

AIM OF STUDY: To assess the impact of pH level on force decay and color stability of orthodontic elastomeric chains (EOC) after exposure to commonly used beverages. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 120 chain cuts were prepared from 2 different manufacturers (GC Orthodontics Europe GmbH, Breckerfeld, Germany, and FORESTADENT® - Bernhard Foerster GmbH, Pforzheim, Germany). According to the distance between loops, two types of chains were selected from each manufacturer: short and medium ones...

To explore whether apple polyphenol extract (APE) ameliorates sugary-diet-induced depression-like behaviors, thirty male C57BL/6 mice (3-4 weeks old) were assigned to three groups randomly to receive different treatments for 8 consecutive weeks: (1) control group (CON), (2) S-HSD group (60% high sucrose diet feeding with 0.1 mg mL-1 sucralose solution as drinking water), and (3) S-APE group (S-HSD feeding with 500 mg per (kg bw day) APE solution gavage). The S-HSD group showed significant depression-like behaviors compared with the CON group, which was manifested by an increased number of buried marbles in the marble burying test, prolonged immobility time in both the tail suspension test and forced swimming test, and cognitive impairment based on the Morris water maze test...

Bitter rot is an emerging disease of apple ( Malus domestica ) fruit in Ontario in part due to changing weather conditions. The disease was mostly documented in warm and humid regions such as the southern USA, and Central and South America. Thirteen Ontario orchards in the fall of 2019 and 15 in 2020 were scouted for bitter rot based on their previous history of the disease. 100 fruit were collected from ten asymptomatic trees per cultivar and two susceptible cultivars, 'Empire' and 'Ambrosia' were scouted per orchard...

The Nai plum (Prunus salicina var. cordata cv. Younai) holds significance as an important deciduous fruit crop in China. In July 2023, symptoms of postharvest fruit rot were observed on Nai plum with a 10% disease incidence of harvested fruits in three supermarkets, located in Nanchang City, Jiangxi Province, China. Infected fruits displayed brown, circular lesions, accompanied by a transition in the surrounding peel color from cyan to red. To investigate the causal agent, small sections (3 to 4 mm2) from the periphery of ten infected fruits were subjected to surface sterilization using 75% ethanol for 30 seconds...

The identification of natural remedies for the management of the skin aging process is an increasingly growing issue. In this context, ursolic acid (UA), a ubiquitous molecule, mainly contained in Annurca apple (AA) fruit, has demonstrated valuable cosmetic potential. To this end, in the current study, the AA oleolite (AAO, extract in sunflower oil containing 784.40 ± 7.579 µg/mL of UA) was evaluated to inhibit porcine elastase enzymatic reactions through a validated spectrophotometric method. AAO has shown a valuable capacity to contrast the elastase enzyme with a calculated IC50 of 212...

Apple, a major fruit of temperate Himalayas, is sprayed with chemical pesticides around 12 times during the cropping season. Various systemic and contact fungicides are applied for the management of major diseases. In order to manage disease, flusilazole 40 EC is frequently used. However, excessive chemical application has been found to be detrimental for consumer safety. Keeping in view consumer safety, risk assessment, the half-life and waiting period for flusilazole 40 EC were evaluated on the Red Velox variety of apple...

UNLABELLED: Final fruit size of apple ( Malus domestica ) cultivars is related to both mesocarp cell division and cell expansion during fruit growth, but it is unclear whether the cell division and/or cell enlargement determine most of the differences in fruit size between Malus species. In this study, by using an interspecific hybrid population between Malus asiatica "Zisai Pearl" and Malus domestica cultivar "Red Fuji," we found that the mesocarp cell number was the main causal factor of diversity in fruit size between Malus species...

Osmanthus pear in orchard, Liuzhou City, Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region. In August, field investigation and sample collection were conducted in orchard. Forty pear trees were selected for symptomatic observation, which of 21 had lesions ranging from 10 to 24 per tree, and 19 with 1 to 8 lesions, respectively. In this study, an electrochemical and aptamer-based aptasensor was developed for the sensitive detection of patulin, a mycotoxin commonly found in fruits and fruit-based products. The aptasensor used an innovative structural switching signal-off platform for detecting patulin. The aptamer immobilization on screen-printed carbon electrodes was achieved through Au electrodeposition and thiol group (-SH) route. Response surface methodology was used to determine the optimal incubation times for the aptamer, blocking agent, and target molecule, which were found to be 180 min, 40 min, and 89 min, respectively...

Panic attacks are an impairing mental health problem that impacts more than one out of every 10 adults in the United States (US). Clinical guidelines suggest panic attacks occur without warning and their unexpected nature worsens their impact on quality of life. Individuals who experience panic attacks would benefit from advance warning of when an attack is likely to occur so that appropriate steps could be taken to manage or prevent it. Our recent work suggests that an individual's likelihood of experiencing a panic attack can be predicted by self-reported mood and community-level Twitter-derived mood the previous day...

The impact of the ethylene inhibitor, 1-methylcyclopropene (1-MCP), on four apple cultivars (Braeburn, Fuji, Jazz and Golden Delicious) over 150 days of storage at 2 °C was assessed. Proton transfer reaction quadrupole mass spectrometry (PTR-QUAD-MS) was used to monitor changes in VOC composition, while texture analysis and X-ray microcomputer tomography (µ-CT) scanning were used to study microstructural changes. The application of 1-MCP on apples reduced VOC emissions, concurrently maintaining a firmer texture compared to the untreated apples at each time point...

Gait variability (GV) is a crucial measure of inconsistency of muscular activities or body segmental movements during repeated tasks. However, it has not been clarified whether GV is associated with walking speed, a clarification needed to exploit effective better bilateral coordination level. For this aim, fourteen male students (age 22.4 ± 2.7 years, body mass 74.9 ± 6.8 kg, and body height 1.78 ± 0...
