Pediatric Pneumonia is one of the principal causes of death by year on children under the age of five worldwide. The diagnosis is commonly made by clinical criteria with support from imaging tools like radiography. Lung ultrasound has been considered a low-cost and portable alternative for pneumonia imaging; however, interpretation is subjective and requires adequate training. In the present work, a pneumonia detection algorithm based on the measurement of the fundamental bandwidth downshift over depth of ultrasound radiofrequency (RF) signals is presented...

Pneumonia is a disease which causes high mortality in children under five years old, particularly in developing countries. This paper proposes a novel application of ultrasound video analysis for the detection of pneumonia. This application is based on the processing of small video chunks, in which an image processing algorithm analyzes each frame to get some overall video statistics. Then, based on these quantities, the likeness of presence of pneumonia in the video is determined. The algorithm exploits different geometrical properties of typical anatomical and pathological features that commonly appear in lung sonography and which are already clinically typified in the literature...

Patients with respiratory distress present a frequent and challenging dilemma for emergency physicians (EPs). The accurate diagnosis and treatment of the underlying pathology is vitally important in these sick patients to ensure the best outcome and minimise harm from unnecessary treatments. Within the last decade, studies have shown lung ultrasonography (LU) to be valuable in the accurate diagnosis of a variety of lung pathologies, including cardiogenic pulmonary oedema, pleural effusion, pneumothorax, haemothorax and pneumonia...

BACKGROUND: Physicians are increasingly using point of care lung ultrasound (LUS) for diagnosing pneumonia, especially in critical situations as it represents relatively easy and immediately available tool. They also used it in many associated pathological conditions such as consolidation, pleural effusion, and interstitial syndrome with some reports of more accuracy than chest X-ray. This systematic review and meta-analysis are aimed to estimate the pooled diagnostic accuracy of ultrasound for the diagnosis of pneumonia versus the standard chest radiological imaging...

Mediastinitis is a rare complication of endobronchial ultrasound-guided transbronchial needle aspiration (EBUS-TBNA). Recent reports of infectious complications following EBUS-TBNA involved oropharyngeal bacteria. Here, we report 2 unusual cases of post-EBUS-TBNA mediastinitis involving Streptococcus pneumoniae and Pseudomonas aeruginosa, which were likely the result of direct inoculation of the organisms at the time of transbronchial needle aspiration. The first case was successfully treated with computed tomography-guided drainage and antibiotics, whereas the second case had >50% distal tracheal obstruction and near total occlusion of the left main stem bronchus, requiring rigid bronchoscopy, stent placement, debulking, and antibiotics...

We evaluated the use of vaginal implant transmitters (VITs) as a means of detecting, capturing, and radio collaring Rocky Mountain bighorn sheep ( Ovis canadensis canadensis) lambs to estimate survival and to facilitate carcass recovery to assess causes of mortality. We focused on one of several bighorn herds in Colorado, USA, suffering from depressed recruitment that was not preceded by a classic all-age die-off. We captured, radio-collared, diagnosed pregnancy by ultrasound examination, and inserted VITs into 15 pregnant ewes from a herd residing near Granite, Colorado...

Thoracic ultrasound is used at the bedside in emergency and critical care settings. Advantages of ultrasound include rapid real-time, low-cost, diagnostic information that can direct patient care without the use of ionizing radiation. We describe methods on how to perform lung ultrasound, with the intent to educate the radiologist who might otherwise be relatively unfamiliar with thoracic sonography. We describe and depict the normal sonographic appearance of lung anatomy. We also show the sonographic appearance of a wide range of lung and pleural pathologies such as pneumonia, pneumothorax, as well as lung and pleural masses...
