BACKGROUND: Sentinel node navigation surgery (SNNS) in early gastric cancer (EGC) is technically feasible according to previous literature, however its long-term oncologic safety has not been reported. METHODS: A single-center, single-arm, phase II trial was conducted to determine the oncologic outcomes of laparoscopic sentinel node (SN) biopsy in clinical stage T1N0M0 gastric cancer patients. Cases with positive SNs on intraoperative pathologic examination underwent conventional gastrectomy with radical lymphadenectomy (SN-positive group), whereas those with negative SNs underwent laparoendoscopic-limited gastric resections without further lymph node dissections (SN-negative group)...

Currently, the use of radioisotope and blue dye for sentinel lymph node biopsy (SLNB) for axillary staging in breast cancer is common. Recently, indocyanine green (ICG) has been proposed as an alternative sentinel lymph node (SLN) tracking agent. We evaluated the clinical value of ICG as an additional tracer in combination with Technetium99m and as an alternative to Technetium99m for the identification of SLN in 104 breast cancer patients. 21 patients had at least 1 histologically tumor-positive SLN. All 21 patients were detected by ICG; in one of these 21 sentinel-positive patients, Technetium99m was unable to identify lymph node involvement...

OBJECTIVES: In case of large breast cancer, neoadjuvant chemotherapy (NAC) can be performed to reduce the size of the tumor and thus perform a conservative surgery. The place of the sentinel lymph node biopsy (SLNB) in case of NAC is still debated. The main aim of this study is to assess the risk of axillary recurrence after negative SLNB before NAC. METHODS: It is a retrospective, observational and uni-centric study. We included 18 to 80-year-old patients with unilateral breast cancer requiring a NAC and with a negative SLNB before NAC...

Objective: Invasive lobular carcinoma (ILC) of the breast makes up 5 to 15 percent of all invasive breast cancers. It has distinctive clinical and histopathological features when compared to invasive ductal carcinoma (IDC). This study intends to describe factors influencing sentinel lymph node (SLN) positivity in patients with "pure" ILC. Materials and Methods: Data of 105 patients, who were treated at a tertiary oncology center, with lobular carcinoma of the breast that were subjected to SLN biopsy was probed retrospectively...

Background: Metaplastic breast cancer (MBC), characterized by admixed epithelial, squamous or mesenchymal elements, constitutes <1% of breast cancers and has a poor prognosis but a paradoxically low reported rate of axillary lymph node (LN) involvement. Due to its rarity, data on appropriate axillary management is lacking, prompting this investigation of LN status and outcomes. Methods: We identified 41 MBC patients treated at our institution 2001-2011 who were followed for a median of 66 months...

Technetium (99mTc)-radiolabeled colloids are popular tracers used to map lymphatic vessels and regional lymph nodes (LNs). The regional LN status is a significant determinant of cancer stage and patient prognosis, and strongly influences treatment. Regional LN dissection has become part of surgical treatment. However, not all patients with LN involvement benefit from extensive lymphadenectomy in terms of prolonged survival. Moreover, overtreatment of patients with localized disease carries unnecessary risk of complications...

OBJECTIVE: Sentinel lymph node (SLN) biopsy is a widely accepted staging procedure for cutaneous melanoma patients who are at risk of clinically occult nodal metastases. Numerous predictive factors for regional lymph node metastases have been identified; however, few have been found to be reproducibly significant. Also, the role of blue dye in identification was questioned in recent trials. Time to procedure was also found to be predictive of SLN positivity, but this was not confirmed in other studies...

OBJECTIVE: The requirement for and extent of lymphadenectomy in endometrial cancer is still controversial. Clinicopathological prognostic factors could be helpful to predict lymph node involvement and avoid therefore unnecessary lymphadenectomy. The aim of this study was to investigate which factors can predict lymph node involvement and how lymph node metastases are distributed in the pelvic and para-aortic regions. METHODS: This retrospective analysis was performed by analyzing data from patients with endometrial cancer treated with standard surgery and lymphadenectomy at the Department of Gynecology and Obstetrics of the University Hospital Ulm in 2000 to 2013...

The level of axillary lymph node involvement in breast cancer is a critical decision factor for adjuvant therapy and the most important indicator of prognosis and survival. Sentinel lymph node biopsy is a minimally invasive technique with low morbidity in axillary staging of breast cancer. Radiocolloid substances (Technetium-99m) and/or blue dyes such as methylene blue or isosulfan blue are used during sentinel lymph node biopsy. Isosulfan blue stain is frequently used in sentinel lymph node biopsy and rarely causes complications...

A diketopyrrolopyrrole-based semiconducting polymer nanoparticle (PDFT1032) has been developed as a NIR-II (near infrared window II, 1000-1700 nm) fluorescent probe. It shows high photostability, a favorable absorption peak at 809 nm, a large Stokes shift of 223 nm, outstanding biocompatibility and minimal in vivo toxicity. More importantly, the versatile use of PDFT1032 for several important biomedical applications in the NIR-II window has been demonstrated, including the NIR-II optical imaging of tumors on a subcutaneous osteosarcoma model, assessing the vascular embolization therapy of tumors, and NIR-II image-guided orthotopic tumor surgery and sentinel lymph node biopsy (SLNB) with high spatial and temporal resolution...
