OBJECTIVES: Carpal Tunnel Syndrome (CTS) is the most common peripheral nerve compression syndrome. This study aims to evaluate the additive contribution of phonophoresis and low-level laser therapy (LLLT) to tendon and nerve gliding exercises electrophysiologically, ultrasonographically, and clinically in the treatment of moderate CTS. METHODS: The sample consisted of 45 patients with moderate CTS, randomized into three groups. Group 1 received phonophoresis and exercise, Group 2 received LLLT and exercise, and Group 3 received exercise alone...

Carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) is the most common entrapment mononeuropathy; the diagnosis is established by electrodiagnostic tests with until 34% of false positives/negatives. We present the following systematic review which objective is to analyze the most recent literature related to the ultrasound parameters described to study CTS. We selected studies that evaluated ultrasound parameters in patients with clinical suspicion following the Cochrane manual's recommendations. We include systematic reviews, meta-analyses, case-control studies and diagnostic tests, evaluating retrospective studies and bibliographic reviews with proper methodological quality...

Background and objective The gold standard of carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) treatment is the section of the transverse carpal ligament, the most common technique being the palmar cutaneous incision. Percutaneous techniques have been developed, although their risk/benefit ratio remains controversial. Objective To analyze the functional outcome of patients undergoing CTS percutaneously ultrasound-guided and compare it with those of open surgery. Material and method Prospective observational cohort study of 50 patients undergoing CTS (25 percutaneous with WALANT technique and 25 by open surgery with local anesthesia and tourniquet)...

INTRODUCTION: Nerve conduction studies (NCS) have been considered as the gold standard in carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) diagnosis, despite correlation between clinical symptomatology and NCS severity has shown to be poor. In fact, clinical symptoms precede NCS changes in months or years. Few papers have been published about the clinical response to treatment of clinically typical CTS, but with normal NCS (NNCS). OBJECTIVE: To compare the clinical response to local corticosteroid injections (LCI) in clinically typical CTS, with NNCS and abnormal NCS (ANCS)...

INTRODUCTION: Nerve compression by anomalous masses located at the wrist and distal forearm is an infrequent condition. They may compress underlying structures in the carpal tunnel region, causing pain and paresthesias, which leads to the wrong diagnosis of carpal tunnel syndrome. CLINICAL CASES: We present three cases of patients with symptomatology and clinical tests compatible with compression of the median nerve in the carpal tunnel but whose physical examination showed a soft mass in the distal region of the forearm which was compressing the median nerve, as demonstrated by ultrasound evaluation...

Carpal tunnel syndrome is median nerve symptomatic compression at the level of the wrist, characterized by increased pressure within the carpal tunnel and decreased nerve function at the level. Carpal tunnel release decreases pressure in Guyon's canal, via open techniques, with symptom and two-point discrimination improvement in the ulnar nerve distribution. We hypothesize that endoscopic carpal tunnel release improves two-point discrimination in the ulnar nerve distribution as well. This study includes 143 patients who underwent endoscopic carpal tunnel release between April 2016 to June 2019 in a single, community-based teaching hospital...

OBJECTIVES: Carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) is the most seen entrapment neuropathy. CTS is a complex syndrome arisen with entrapment of median nerve at wrist. Pain worst at night, paresthesia, hypoesthesia, paralysis, and muscle atrophy can be seen through nerve entrapment level. Besides, we see negative symptoms for sleep in our practice. It is known the effect of invasive and non-invasive treatments on the sleep. We aimed to search the effect of treatment of CTS on the sleep modalities...

Carpal tunnel syndrome belongs to the most common causative factors of surgical interventions in the wrist region. Anatomy of carpal tunnel and median nerve is a subject of current revision. Authors paid attention to etiology of the syndrome based on review of literature and their own anatomical studies. They remind basic knowledge on the median nerve and indicate that only based on number of dissections a good orthopedic surgeon may acquire experience necessary to perform procedures in a most appropriate way...

Chronic nerve compression (CNC), as in carpal tunnel syndrome, is a common cause of peripheral nerve dysfunction in humans. Previous studies using animal models have demonstrated progressive demyelination and a slowing of nerve conduction velocity. To characterize the Schwann cell response to CNC, we evaluated total Schwann cell number, apoptosis, and proliferation in an animal model of CNC. Design-based stereologic techniques revealed a striking transient increase in Schwann cell number following CNC. Schwann cell number increased sixfold relative to the normal nerve at the site of compression at 1 month and then slowly declined toward control levels...

OBJECTIVES: 1) To examine the diagnostic value of the newly proposed manual carpal compression test (mCCT). 2) To evaluate the test efficacy of a serial use of mCCT and Phalen's test (PT) in the clinical diagnosis of carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) in comparison with standard nerve conduction studies. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Prospective, controlled study of 47 patients with 63 symptomatic CTS hands according to clinical as well as electrophysiological criteria. In the control group, 39 hands of 20 healthy volunteers were examined...
