Psoriasis is a chronic inflammatory disease that places a great burden on both individuals and society. The use of East Asian herbal medicine (EAHM) in combination with conventional medications is emerging as an effective strategy to control the complex immune-mediated inflammation of this disease from an integrative medicine (IM) perspective. The safety and efficacy of IM compared to conventional medicine (CM) were evaluated by collecting randomized controlled trial literature from ten multinational research databases...

ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE: Traditional Chinese medicine believes that "blood fever" is an important cause of psoriasis. Fufang Shengdi mixture (FFSD), based on the Hongban Decoction, is composed of Rehmannia glutinosa (Gaertn.) DC., Raw gypsum (Chinese: Sheng Shi Gao), and Lonicera japonica Thunb (Caprifoliaceae). FFSD has effects on nourishing Yin, clearing heat, connecting collaterals, and cooling blood. In modern medical explanation, FFSD has the effects of anti-inflammatory and immunosuppression...

ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE: In the theory of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), the etiology of psoriasis is assigned to damp-heat internal depression, blood poisoning, Yin deficiency and loss of nourishment. Fang-Ji-Di-Huang-Decoction (FJDH), a well-known Chinese traditional formula, is recorded in Synopsis of the Golden Chamber (in the Eastern Han Dynasty). This decoction is composed of dried roots of Rehmannia glutinosa (Gaertn.) DC., dried roots of Stephania tetrandra S. Moore, roots of Saposhnikovia divaricata (Turcz...

BACKGROUND: We have developed a novel aqueous polyherbal formulation (SIRB-001) consisting of 3 herbs; Rheum palmatum L., Lonicera Japonica and Rehmannia glutinosa Libosch in the ratio 1:1:3. SIRB-001 has demonstrated efficacious effects in psoriasis patients. OBJECTIVE: This study was aimed at scientifically evaluating the in vitro antipsoriatic activity of SIRB-001. METHOD: The in vitro anti-psoriatic properties of SIRB-001 were assessed in human keratinocyte cell line; HaCaT...

Reviews and meta-analyses of clinical trials identified plants used as traditional medicines (TMs) that show promise for psoriasis. These include Rehmannia glutinosa, Camptotheca acuminata, Indigo naturalis and Salvia miltiorrhiza. Compounds contained in these TMs have shown activities of relevance to psoriasis in experimental models. To further investigate the likely mechanisms of action of the multiple compounds in these TMs, we undertook a computer-based in silico investigation of the proteins known to be regulated by these compounds and their associated biological pathways...

Clinically, oral Chinese herbal medicine (CHM) is widely used in the treatment of psoriasis. This review evaluates the effects of oral CHM in combination with pharmacotherapy for psoriasis vulgaris. The Cochrane Library, PubMed, Embase, CINAHL, CNKI, and CQVIP were searched from their inceptions to November 2012. Randomized controlled trials (RCTs) investigating CHM plus pharmacotherapy compared to pharmacotherapy were included. Data were analyzed using Review Manager 5.1.0. Seventeen RCTs were included, conducted in China, and employed a diversity of both herbal medicines and pharmacotherapies...

This review provides assessments of the efficacy and safety of oral forms of phytotherapy in psoriasis management and discusses the pharmacological actions of the plants that have been frequently used in clinical trials. It employed the methods described in the Cochrane Handbook. Ten randomized controlled trials that compared a plant-based intervention with placebo or a pharmacotherapy in the treatment of psoriasis vulgaris and used Psoriasis Area Severity Index (PASI) as an outcome measure were included. Superiority to placebo was found in two out of three studies...

The enzymes 5-lipoxygenase and elastase are therapeutic targets in dermatological disorders such as psoriasis. Fifteen extracts from traditional Chinese medicinal plants used to treat topical inflammations were screened for their inhibitory effect on lipoxygenase, cyclooxygenase and elastase activity in intact leukocytes and platelets. Astragalus membranaceus, Forsythia suspensa and Poria cocos inhibited 5-lipoxygenase, with IC50 values of 141, 80 and 141 microg mL(-1), respectively. The latter two species, along with Angelica dahurica and Angelica pubescens, also inhibited elastase (IC50 values of 80, 123, 68 and 93 microg mL(-1), respectively), while A...
