OBJECTIVE: Clinically, we found the increased incidence of acquired colesteatoma in the patients with osteoporosis. In this study, we used a retrospective cohort to examine this association and to investigate the possible mechanism. METHODS: We conducted a population-based retrospective cohort study by using the National Health Insurance Research Database (NHIRD). We identified an osteoporosis cohort comprising 37 124 patients newly diagnosed with osteoporosis aged 20 years or older...

UNLABELLED: Cholesteatoma is constituted of matrix, perimatrix and cystic content. Some authors affirm that, in children, its clinical behavior is more aggressive of the than in adults. AIMS: Histologic compared cholesteatomas of children and adults. METHODOLOGY: 74 cholesteatomas been analyzed, being 35 of pediatrics patients (<18 years). The average number of cellular layers and hyperplasia in the matrix had been evaluated; thickness, delimitante epithelium, fibrosis, inflammation and granuloma in the perimatrix...

Hypothalamus-pituitary tumours and their treatments (neurosurgery and/or radiotherapy) are major causes of acquired hypopituitarism. Scientific and clinical evidences show the positive effect of GH replacement therapy in severe adult GH deficiency (GHD) pointed toward the need of diagnostic screening of conditions at high risk for GHD. We screened 152 adults (82 males, 70 females; age: 52.3+/-1.2 years, age-range: 20-80 years, BMI: 26.4+/-0.8 kg/m(2)) in order to disclose the presence of GHD after neurosurgery for hypothalamus-pituitary tumours...

UNLABELLED: In this study we have assessed the frequency of karyotypes, phenotypes and some associated diseases 23 girls affected with turner's syndrome. Moreover, we have analyzed their relationships. RESULTS: The most important findings the following: 1) The mean age at diagnosis was 7.37 +/- 5.65 (0, 16) years. 2) The most frequent karyotype was monosomy 45XO, which was found in fourteen patients (60.9%), followed by isochromosome of the long arm of chromosome 46 XiXq in five cases (21...

Epithelial proliferation in colesteatoma and its influence on the subepithelial inflammatory reaction was studied using morphometry and nuclear photometry of specimens. Twenty specimens of colesteatoma and 15 specimens of skin from the external auditory canal were examined. Nuclear content was greater in the basal cells of colesteatoma epithelium than in the basal cells of external auditory canal epithelium, suggesting increased proliferative activity. This activity was found to be reted to the inflammatory infiltrate of the conjunctive tissue and varied in different specimens...

Non-traumatic pneumocephalus of otic etiology, secondary to colesteatoma or the otologic surgery is extremely rare, and very few cases are described in the worldwide literature. The existence of air in the intracranial spaces/tracts is known as pneumocephalus. Symptoms are due to the increased intracranial pressure, therefore, a differential diagnosis should be made in order to rule out other expansive processes. Surgical treatment, with closure of the existing fistula, is conclusive. We present a case of tension pneumocephalus secondary to otologic surgery and review the literature existing on the topic...
