Circulating tumor cells (CTCs) are cancer cells that slough off from the tumor and circulate in the peripheral blood and lymphatic system as micro metastases that eventually results in macro metastases. Through a simple blood draw, sensitive CTC detection from clinical samples has proven to be a useful tool for determining the prognosis of cancer. Recent technological developments now make it possible to detect CTCs reliably and repeatedly from a simple and straightforward blood test. Multicenter trials to assess the clinical value of CTCs have demonstrated the prognostic value of these cancer cells...

One of the characteristic features of ovarian cancer is its early dissemination. Metastasis and the invasiveness of ovarian cancer are strongly dependent on the phenotypical and molecular determinants of cancer cells. Invasive cancer cells, circulating tumor cells, and cancer stem cells, which are responsible for the metastatic process, may all undergo different modes of transition, giving rise to mesenchymal, amoeboid, and redifferentiated epithelial cells. Such variability is the result of the changing needs of cancer cells, which strive to survive and colonize new organs...

Fontan physiology creates a chronic state of decreased cardiac output and systemic venous congestion, leading to liver cirrhosis/malignancy, protein-losing enteropathy, chylothorax, or plastic bronchitis. Creating a fenestration improves cardiac output and relieves some venous congestion. The anatomic connection of the thoracic duct to the subclavian-jugular vein junction exposes the lymphatic system to systemic venous hypertension and could induce plastic bronchitis. To address this complication, two techniques have been developed...

A thoracoamniotic shunt was placed in a fetus affected by a right congenital diaphragmatic hernia (RCDH) complicated by voluminous nonimmune hydrops (NIH) at 30 weeks of gestation. The fetus showed congestive cardiac failure with a combined cardiac output (CCO) of 460.7 ml/min (Z-score: -1.2). After seven days, no edema, ascites, or pleural effusion was present. CCO increased significantly, reaching a Z-score of -0.2, as well as right and left cardiac output (Z-scores: -0.3 and -0.8, respectively). Two weeks later, the cardiac function and the ascites got worse despite the correct shunt placement, suggesting a possible occlusion...

INTRODUCTION: Pulmonary tumor thrombotic microangiopathy (PTTM) is a rare complication of metastatic carcinoma, which occurs in patients with pulmonary arterial hypertension, and is mostly fatal. Circulating tumor cell clusters have been recognized as critical factors during breast cancer progression. CASE PRESENTATION: An 80-year-old woman with triple-negative breast cancer was admitted to our hospital with progressive dyspnea and lower back pain. Breast cancer treatment included mastectomy, neoadjuvant and adjuvant chemotherapy as well as adjuvant radiotherapy, receiving her last cycle of radiotherapy 8 days before death...

BACKGROUND: Lymphatic filariasis (LF) is a parasitic disease transmitted by mosquitoes, causing severe pain, disfiguring, and disabling clinical conditions such as lymphoedema and hydrocoele. LF is a global public health problem affecting 72 countries, primarily in Africa and Asia. Since 2000, the World Health Organization (WHO) has led the Global Programme to Eliminate Lymphatic Filariasis (GPELF) to support all endemic regions. This paper focuses on the achievements of the Malawi LF Elimination Programme between 2000 and 2020 to eliminate LF as a public health problem, making it the second sub-Saharan country to receive validation from the WHO...

BACKGROUND: Mature endothelial cells (ECs) are heterogeneous, with subtypes defined by tissue origin and position within the vascular bed (ie, artery, capillary, vein, and lymphatic). How this heterogeneity is established during the development of the vascular system, especially arteriovenous specification of ECs, remains incompletely characterized. METHODS: We used droplet-based single-cell RNA sequencing and multiplexed error-robust fluorescence in situ hybridization to define EC and EC progenitor subtypes from E9...

The human vasculature plays a crucial role in the blood supply of nearly all organs as well as the drainage of the interstitial fluid. Consequently, if these physiological systems go awry, pathological changes might occur. Hence, the regeneration of existing vessels, as well as approaches to engineer artificial blood and lymphatic structures represent current challenges within the field of vascular research. In this review, we provide an overview of both the vascular blood circulation and the long-time neglected but equally important lymphatic system, with regard to their organotypic vasculature...

The review delves into the realm of reducing submental fat, presenting a comprehensive analysis of various lipolytic agents used in plastic surgery and dermatology. The introduction establishes the context by defining the key indicators of a youthful neck and emphasizing the significant influence of fat in the aging process, particularly in the submental area. The usage of aminophylline involves subcutaneous injections, facilitating fat breakdown by increasing cyclic adenosine monophosphate and inhibiting adenosine receptors...

BACKGROUND: The lymphatic filariasis (LF) elimination program in all sixty-three endemic districts of Nepal was based on annual mass drug administration (MDA) using a combination of diethylcarbamazine (DEC) and albendazole for at least 5 years. The MDA program was started in the Parsa district of the Terai region and at least six rounds of MDA were completed between 2003 and 2017 in all filariasis endemic districts of Central Nepal. Transmission Assessment Survey (TAS) report indicated that circulating filarial antigen (CFA) prevalence was below the critical value i...

BACKGROUND: Inside the incompressible cranium, the volume of cerebrospinal fluid is directly linked to blood volume: a change in either will induce a compensatory change in the other. Vasodilatory lowering of blood pressure has been shown to result in an increase of intracranial pressure, which, in normal circumstances should return to equilibrium by increased fluid efflux. In this study, we investigated the effect of blood pressure lowering on fluorescent cerebrospinal fluid tracer absorption into the systemic blood circulation...

Malignant melanoma (MM) is a highly aggressive tumour that can easily metastasize through the lymphatic system at the early stages. Lymph node (LN) involvement and lymphatic vessel (LV) density (LVD) represent a harbinger of an adverse prognosis, indicating a strong link between the state of the lymphatic system and the advancement of MM. Permeable capillary lymphatic vessels are the optimal conduits for melanoma cell (MMC) invasion, and lymphatic endothelial cells (LECs) can also release a variety of chemokines that actively attract MMCs expressing chemokine ligands through a gradient orientation...

Most of the malignancies detected within the brain parenchyma are of metastatic origin. As the brain lacks classical lymphatic circulation, the primary way for metastasis relies on hematogenous routes. Dissemination of metastatic cells to the brain implies attachment to the luminal surface of brain endothelial cells, transmigration through the vessel wall, and adhesion to the brain surface of the vasculature. During this process, tumor cells must interact with brain endothelial cells and later on with pericytes...

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Breast cancer therapy is a common cause of lymphedema, a chronic condition resulting from impaired fluid drainage through the lymphatic system. The accumulation of fluid in the affected limb leads to swelling, inflammation, and fibrosis, causing irreversible changes. While conservative therapy is the initial treatment for lymphedema, it may prove ineffective for advanced-stage cases that require surgical intervention. Physiological approaches such as lymphaticovenous anastomosis (LVA) and vascularized lymph node transfer (VLNT) aim to restore lymphatic circulation, while reductive approaches such as excision of excess tissue and liposuction (LS) aim to eliminate fibrofatty tissue...
