Urease from Klebsiella aerogenes is composed of three subunits (UreA-UreB-UreC) that assemble into a (UreABC)(3) quaternary structure. UreC harbors the dinuclear nickel active site, whereas the functions of UreA and UreB remain unknown. UreD and UreF accessory proteins previously were suggested to reposition UreB and increase the level of exposure of the nascent urease active site, thus facilitating metallocenter assembly. In this study, cells were engineered to separately produce (UreAC)(3) or UreB, and the purified proteins were characterized...

BACKGROUND/PURPOSE: Intracranial bleeding has been reported as one of the complications of both open and minimally invasive fetal surgery and putatively attributed to intraoperative fluctuations of carotid blood flow. The aim of this study was to look at fetal carotid blood flow and its relationship with umbilical blood flow, blood pressure, oxygen delivery, and acid-base status in the fetus at various intraamniotic pressures with both liquid and gas media during fetoscopic surgery. METHODS: Six 115- to 130-day-gestation ewes underwent continuous invasive systemic blood pressure monitoring in the descending aorta...

The correction of malocclusions in juvenile periodontitis (JP) patients completing periodontal therapy is a problem of increasing clinical concern to orthodontists, since many teeth with severe alveolar bone loss in these patients can now be successfully treated without extraction. In this report, fixed edgewise orthodontic therapy was carried out after the completion of periodontal therapy on four JP patients. The orthodontic therapy included extensive intrusion of teeth severely affected by JP. Phase-contrast microscopic analysis of subgingival plaque from orthodontically treated teeth was used to monitor longitudinally the effects of fixed orthodontic bands on the subgingival flora and also to monitor the efficacy of topical and systemic antimicrobial therapy aimed at suppression of suspected periodontopathic bacteria...

The study included ten patients with severe metabolic acidosis (pH under 7.0) and clinical signs of shock. In four of them assisted ventilation was indicated as an urgency. In the other six patients assisted ventilation was used since the beginning, simultaneously with reposition of blood volume and administration of sodium bicarbonate. There were much better results with the latter management, with faster correction of the acidosis, without any complications and good survivorship.
