This paper describes the development and the validation of a prototype wearable miniaturized impedance monitoring system for remote monitoring in home-based dialysis patients. This device is intended to assess the hydration status of dialysis patients using calf impedance measurements. The system is based on the low-power AD8302 component. The impedance calibration procedure is described together with the Cole parameter estimation and the hydric volume estimation. Results are given on a test cell to validate the design and on preliminary calf measurements showing Cole parameter variations during hemodialysis...

The detection of arterial Blood Pressure waveform provides important information about the subject health status. Laser Doppler Vibrometry (LDV) is a non-contact technique with high sensitivity able to detect mechanical movements of the arterial wall; several previous studies have shown that LDV is able to characterize cardiac activity. Photoplethysmogram (PPG) quantifies the digital volume artery pulse, which has been demonstrated to be closely related to the pressure signal measured by an arterial tonometer...

End-systolic volume (ESV) and end-diastolic volume (EDV) are key parameters in the analysis of left ventricular (LV) function, and the study of cardiac remodeling. The volume regulation graph (VRG) relates these fundamental determinants, and permits convenient stratification for clinically relevant covariates. This contribution analyzes sex-associated differences in hemodynamic parameters for 197 heart failure (HF) patients, evaluated by biplane ventriculography, in combination with arterial pressure. We calculated LV parameters such as stroke volume (SV), cardiac output (CO), ESV, EDV, ejection fraction (EF), end-systolic elastance (Emax), besides arterial parameters: effective arterial elastance (Ea), elastance ratio (the coupling index k), peripheral resistance (Rs), pulse pressure (PP), and arterial compliance (C), all normalized for body surface area when appropriate...

Cardiac output is an important variable when monitoring hemodynamic status. In particular, changes in cardiac output represent the goal of several circulatory management therapies. Unfortunately, cardiac output is very difficult to estimate, either in experimental or clinical settings. The goal of this work is to compare four techniques to measure cardiac output: pressure-volume catheter, aortic flow probe, thermodilution, and the PiCCO monitor. These four techniques were simultaneously used during experiments of fluid and endotoxin administration on 7 pigs...

The united airways concept suggests that patients with asthma typically exhibit parallel inflammation in the upper airway. The resulting nasal symptoms should reduce quality of life and substantially affect the evaluation of asthma control among these patients. This study aimed to assess the association of nasal symptoms with the evaluation of asthma control.Fifty-eight patients with asthma and persistent nasal symptoms were prospectively recruited for evaluations of their sinonasal symptoms and asthma control in a cross-sectional study from August 2013 to June 2016...

Increasing evidence suggests that CUL4A, a ubiquitin ligase, is involved in the promotion of cancer malignancy and correlated with worse clinical prognosis in several kinds of human cancers. Although its effect and mechanism on the progression of colorectal cancer (CRC) remain unknown. Our clinical data show that CUL4A protein is overexpressed, positively associated with lymph nodes status, differentiation degree, tumor size, and poor prognosis in 80 CRC patients. CUL4A overexpression promotes cell proliferation and colony formation of CRC cells...

BACKGROUND: Forced oscillation technique (FOT) has been reported to be useful in the evaluation and management of obstructive lung disease, including COPD. To date, no data are available concerning long-term changes in respiratory system impedance measured by FOT. Additionally, although exacerbations have been reported to be associated with excessive lung function decline in COPD, the impact of exacerbations on the results of FOT has not been demonstrated. The aim of this study was to investigate the longitudinal changes in respiratory system impedance and the influence of exacerbations thereon...

BACKGROUND: Recent findings suggest that using alveolar PCO2 (PACO2 ) estimated by volumetric capnography in the Bohr equation instead of PaCO2 (Enghoff modification) could be appropriate for the calculation of physiological dead space to tidal volume ratio (VD/VT Bohr and VD/VT Enghoff, respectively). We aimed to describe the relationship between these 2 measurements in mechanically ventilated children and their significance in cases of ARDS. METHODS: From June 2013 to December 2013, mechanically ventilated children with various respiratory conditions were included in this study...

BACKGROUND: Patients with failed bioprostheses are an increasing population at high risk for redo surgery. Valve-in-valve transcatheter aortic valve implantation is a promising alternative but a limited number of first-generation devices have proven efficacy in all cases. METHODS: Patients with degenerated bioprostheses at high risk for redo surgery were included in the registry after being assigned to valve-in-valve intervention by a local heart team. Main basal and follow-up data (at 1 month and 6 months) of patients undergoing valve-in-valve transcatheter aortic valve implantation with the Lotus valve system (Boston Scientific, Natick, MA) in three high-volume Italian centers were entered in the registry...

Immunosuppressive medication dosing errors are not unfrequent and may present a number of challenges to transplant clinicians. Tacrolimus (TAC) is a widely used immunosuppressant with a narrow therapeutic index and potential severe side effects, including neurotoxicity and kidney injury. We herein report a case of 60-year-old woman who underwent deceased-donor liver transplantation at our center and due to inadvertent TAC overexposure was admitted to the Intensive Care Unit because of severe neurologic impairment, kidney injury and arterial hypotension...

Mild cognitive impairment (MCI) represents a transitional stage from normal aging to Alzheimer's disease (AD) and corresponds to a higher risk of developing AD. Thus, it is necessary to explore and predict the onset of AD in MCI stage. In this study, we propose a combination of independent component analysis (ICA) and the multivariate Cox proportional hazards regression model to investigate promising risk factors associated with MCI conversion among 126 MCI converters and 108 MCI non-converters from the Alzheimer's Disease Neuroimaging Initiative (ADNI) database...

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Although volume controlled ventilation (VCV) has been the traditional mode of ventilation in robotic surgery, recently pressure controlled ventilation (PCV) has been used more frequently. However, evidence on whether PCV is superior to VCV is still lacking. We intended to compare the effects of VCV and PCV on respiratory mechanics and haemodynamic in patients undergoing robotic surgeries in steep Trendelenburg position. METHODS: This prospective, randomized trial was conducted on sixty patients between 20 and 70 years belonging to the American Society of Anesthesiologist Physical Status I-II...

The process of DNA CpG methylation has been extensively investigated for over 50 years and revealed associations between changing methylation status of CpG islands and gene expression. As a result, DNA CpG methylation is implicated in the control of gene expression in developmental and homeostasis processes, as well as being a cancer-driver mechanism. The development of genome-wide technologies and sophisticated statistical analytical approaches has ushered in an era of widespread analyses, for example in the cancer arena, of the relationships between altered DNA CpG methylation, gene expression, and tumor status...

In large parrots electro-stimulation is suitable for collecting semen, and therefore, to facilitate semen examination and artificial insemination. Previous studies have detected differences in the semen collection success rate and semen parameters between psittacine genera. It remained unclear whether these differences were genera-related, seasonal variations or depend on the males' relationship status. To answer these questions, semen collection and spermatological analysis were performed for four psittacine groups (macaws, amazons, eclectus parrots and cockatoos) over 13 months...
