OBJECTIVE: To preliminarily investigate the expression of cysteine proteinase inhibitors C (cystatin C) in primary hepatic carcinoma. METHODS: Hepatic tissue samples and peripheral blood samples were collected from 41 cases of primary hepatic carcinoma, 24 cases of cirrhosis and 40 cases of normal control. To primary hepatic carcinoma, three kinds of hepatic tissue samples were harvested, including carcinoma tissue, adjacent non-tumor tissue, and distant normal tissue...

For analyzing the structural characteristics of hepatitis G virus (HGV or GBV-C), 277 nucleic acids of 5' non-coding region of HGV were amplified using PCR from the sera of 2 paid donors, 2 chronic hepatitis patients and 2 patients with liver cirrohsis. The products were cloned and sequenced. The data were analyzed with the computer programs. The results indicated that the gene sequence homologies among 6 HGV isolates (G001-G006) obtained in this study were above 96.2%. The comparison of these 6 isolates and 3 foreign isolates reported previously showed that the sequence homologies were in the range from 86...

Our goal was to describe disease-specific survival and the clinical variables that predict survival in a large national cohort of adult liver transplant recipients. Data on 17,044 adult patients who received an initial orthotopic liver transplant between 1990 and 1996 with follow-up through 1999 was obtained from the United Network for Organ Sharing (UNOS). Disease-specific Kaplan-Meier survival plots and Cox Proportional Hazards models were estimated, and differences in the clinical characteristics of patients at the time of transplantation by disease were examined...

A 43-year-old woman with a huge portal-systemic shunt accompanied by myxedema showed slow speech and behavior. Several imaging studies revealed a bold portal-systemic shunt from the splenic vein to the left renal vein. In addition, hypothyroidism caused by chronic thyroiditis was diagnosed, and synthesized thyroxine replacement was effective for the symptoms. However, the serum ammonia and indocyanin green retention remained in the abnormal range, nevertheless the portal vein pressure was normal and findings of liver cirrohsis were not recognized histologically...

The aim of this investigation was to develop a mathematical model of mean age, mean arsenic dietary dose, and age-specific prevalence rate for endemic chronic arsenic poisoning. Data on mean age (years), mean arsenic dietary dose (mg/kg body weight/day), and age-specific prevalence rate per 100,000 population for endemic chronic arsenic poisoning in Antofagasta Commune, northern Chile, for the 1968-1971 period, were collected. Endemic chronic arsenic poisoning means here chronic arsenical dermatosis associated with marked or sever symptoms (or signs) of chronic arsenic poisoning (chronic diarrhoea, hepatic cirrohsis, chronic bronchitis, bronchiectasis, recurrent broncho-pneumonia, cardiomegaly, systemic occlusive arterial disease, cerebral thrombosis, etc...
