BACKGROUND: Subcutaneous fat necrosis of the newborn (SCFN) is a rare form of panniculitis manifesting as erythematous plaques or nodules at sites of brown fat in neonates. Surgical management may be indicated in severe cases; however, there is a paucity of literature compiling presentations and outcomes of these surgical patients. METHODS: The authors performed a systematic review, in consultation with a licensed librarian, on MEDLINE and Embase for studies including patients with SCFN who were surgically managed...

Neutrophilic panniculitides are a heterogeneous group of inflammatory disorders encompassing many different entities. This review article focuses on the epidemiology, pathogenesis, clinicopathological features, diagnosis, and treatment of selected diseases. Patients often seek care due to systemic involvement, but the variable presentation of panniculitides can present a diagnostic challenge. Most therapeutic modalities for neutrophilic disorders are anecdotal at best with a notable lack of standardization of the responses to medications...

Gamma/delta T-cell lymphoma is a rare and aggressive subtype of primary cutaneous lymphoma. Clinical manifestations typically include the development of subcutaneous nodules and ulcerated plaques. Some forms present as panniculitis with hemophagocytic syndrome. Prognosis is bleak, with a 10% 5-year survival rate. In this report, we present the case of a 20-year-old man from French Polynesia, referred for 18F-FDG PET/CT because of the progressive worsening of febrile cutaneous-mucosal infiltration on the face persisting for 1 month...

The potential liability to hypercatabolism in lipodystrophy remains to be fully elucidated. Here we report a 28-year-old Japanese woman with acquired generalized lipodystrophy, who presented with recurrence of panniculitis and anemia. After corticosteroid treatment was started, she showed rapid reductions in body weight and lean mass by 15% at maximum, accompanied by an elevated urea nitrogen/creatinine ratio, which recovered almost fully as the corticosteroid treatment was tapered and discontinued. She had multiple risk factors for hypercatabolism: lack of metabolic reserves, insulin resistance, and hyperglycemia due to lipodystrophy, lowered daily activity due to anemia, persistent inflammation, and wasting associated with panniculitis, and relatively insufficient energy and protein intake during hospitalization...

BACKGROUND: Erythema induratum (EI) is a tuberculid associated with Mycobacterium tuberculosis (TB) infection. TB has been identified in Taiwan with a high percentage of EI using PCR. However, this pathogen has rarely been detected recently. OBJECTIVE: To explore the association between EI, annual incidence of tuberculosis in Taiwan, and treatment outcomes over the past two decades. METHODS: Patients diagnosed with EI between 2001 and 2020 were enrolled based on histopathology, tissue culture, and TB-PCR tests...

BACKGROUND: The anti-programmed death 1 (PD-1) antibody has led to durable clinical responses in a wide variety of human tumors. We have previously developed the caninized anti-canine PD-1 antibody (ca-4F12-E6) and evaluated its therapeutic properties in dogs with advance-staged oral malignant melanoma (OMM), however, their therapeutic effects on other types of canine tumors remain unclear. OBJECTIVE: The present clinical study was carried out to evaluate the safety profile and clinical efficacy of ca-4F12-E6 in dogs with advanced solid tumors except for OMM...

Kikuchi-Fujimoto disease (KFD) is a benign self-limiting condition primarily affecting young females. It usually presents with fever and cervical lymphadenopathy of unknown aetiology with a preponderance of the Asian population. Histopathology is critical in making an accurate diagnosis. While the typical microscopic features include paracortical necrosis with debris, histiocytosis with immunoblasts, and absent neutrophils, rarely, KFD can show atypical features like marked immunoblastic proliferation mimicking lymphoma, demonstrate vasculitis mimicking lupus erythematosus, etc...

We present a unique case of pancreatic panniculitis (PP) in a 42-year-old male with a history of pancreas-after-kidney (PAK) transplant. The patient developed PP due to acute pancreas allograft rejection. Clinical manifestations included fevers, myalgias, arthralgias, and tender erythematous subcutaneous nodules on the lower extremities. A recent hospital admission was noted for acute pancreas allograft rejection related to low tacrolimus levels. Rheumatological and infectious disease workups were negative...

Sarcoidosis is an autoimmune multisystemic granulomatous disease with an unknown etiology. Löfgren syndrome (LS), an infrequent initial presentation of acute sarcoidosis, is characterized by the classic triad of acute arthritis, erythema nodosum (EN), and bilateral hilar lymphadenopathy (BHL). The presence of this triad offers high diagnostic specificity for sarcoidosis, eliminating the need for a confirmatory biopsy. Typically, LS follows a predictable, self-limiting clinical course. However, atypical presentations require early suspicion and closer monitoring...

A 53-year-old man with adult-onset Still's disease developed severe streptococcal toxic shock syndrome (STSS) due to Streptococcus dysgalactiae subsp. equisimilis (SDSE), following retroperitoneal panniculitis. He was receiving tocilizumab (TCZ), an interleukin-6 receptor inhibitor. The modifying effect of TCZ on the immune response and the pathophysiology of SDSE infection may have led to retroperitoneal panniculitis and atypical STSS with delayed shock and flare of soft tissue inflammation.

Clinical manifestations of dermatological and musculoskeletal conditions can sometimes overlap, leading to confusion in diagnosis. Patients with nail and skin infections may undergo imaging examinations with suspicions of muscle, tendon, or joint injuries. Dermatological infections often involve soft tissues and musculoskeletal structures, and their etiology can range from fungi, bacteria, viruses, to protozoa. Relying solely on physical examination may not be sufficient for accurate diagnosis and treatment planning, necessitating the use of complementary imaging exams...

Introduction Erythema nodosum (EN) is the most common form of panniculitis that predominantly affects the shins. While EN in atypical sites has been described by many authors, there are currently only case studies published on this topic. This study aimed to evaluate clinical differences between patients suffering from EN on the shins, compared to patients with EN in atypical locations. Methods We analyzed 105 patients in a retrospective, single-center study at a University Hospital in Switzerland. Typical EN was defined as lesions, found only on the lower legs, while atypical EN as lesions on the upper legs, trunk, arms, or face, only or in addition to lesions on the lower legs...

Subcutaneous panniculitis-like T-cell lymphoma (SPTL) is a rare subtype of non-Hodgkin lymphoma that manifests as panniculitis-like skin lesions. It frequently co-occurs with hemophagocytic lymphohistocytosis, a life-threatening hyperinflammatory syndrome. The majority of SPTL cases express αβ T-cell receptors (SPTL-AB) and have a favorable prognosis with oral immunosuppressive agents. We report a 37-year-old male patient with HIV infection who had a history of low-grade fever for one year, multiple tender subcutaneous nodules on both thighs, and cytopenia...
