: Identifying the etiology of acute pelvic pain in girls is often clinically challenging. Particularly in young girls, it is often difficult to determine if acute pelvic symptoms are originating from a gynecologic source or from a genitourinary or gastrointestinal etiology based on the child's clinical examination alone. Therefore, imaging plays a key role in establishing a diagnosis and in directing medical and surgical treatment. Pediatric gynecologic conditions, which can present acutely with pain or mass or both include ovarian torsion, hematometrocolpos, pelvic inflammatory disease, inguinal hernias containing an ovary or the uterus or both, adnexal cysts, pregnancy, vaginal foreign bodies, and ovarian vein thrombosis...

The US Medical Eligibility Criteria for Contraceptive Use (US MEC) and US Selected Practice Recommendations for Contraceptive Use (US SPR) provide evidence-based guidance to safely provide contraception counseling and services. Both documents were updated in 2016 and are endorsed by the North American Society for Pediatric and Adolescent Gynecology. The purpose of this mini-review is to highlight updates to the US MEC and US SPR that are most relevant to health care providers of adolescents in order to support dissemination and implementation of these evidence-based best practices...

: 242 Background: Communication failures cause two-thirds of sentinel events in hospitals. These adverse occurrences are often both fatal and preventable. Consequently, improving the quality of handoffs has been identified by multiple accreditation constituents as a top priority patient safety goal. This project was part of an institutional initiative to standardize handoffs among physicians, trainees, and midlevel providers. METHODS: Four subgroups were identified as pilot areas: Gynecologic Oncology (Gyn Onc) fellows to nocturnalists, Surgical Oncology fellows, Pediatric Oncology residents and fellows, and Emergency Center attending staff to inpatient hospitalists...

Since 1988, healthcare has been considered a citizen's right in Brazil. The Sistema Único de Saúde (SUS), has undergone development and expansion to ensure universal health coverage for the Brazilian public, the world's fifth largest population. The coordination of effective communications between primary care physicians, specialists and patients is a significant challenge, particularly the referral process. Our study objective was to understand the facilitators and barriers associated with referral process communications between primary care physicians and regional university hospital specialists in the State of Sao Paulo...

In this article, we describe the history and current state of psychosomatic medicine (PSM) in Japan and propose measures that could be considered based on our view of the future prospects of PSM in Japan. The Japanese Society of PSM (JSPM) was established in 1959, and the first Department of Psychosomatic Internal Medicine in Japan was established at Kyushu University In 1963. PSM in Japan has shown a prominent, unique development, with 3,300 members (as of March 2016), comprised of 71.6% of medical doctors including psychosomatic internal medicine (PIM) specialists, general internists, psychiatrists, pediatricians, obstetricians and gynecologists, dentists, dermatologists, and others...

BACKGROUND: Acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) is the most common childhood malignancy. Relapse of ALL occurs in 15-20% of patients, with 2-6% occurring exclusively in extramedullary sites. Relapse of ALL in gynecologic organs is extremely rare. CASE: We present a case of a 12 year old with a history of ALL who was referred to the pediatric gynecology clinic with abnormal uterine bleeding. She was determined to have an extramedullary uterine relapse of her ALL. SUMMARY AND CONCLUSION: Abnormal uterine bleeding in the setting of childhood malignancy is a frequent reason for consultation to Pediatric and Adolescent Gynecology services...

Carcinomas are rare tumors of the adolescent-young adult (AYA) with a different spectrum from those of adults. The most common sites outside of the thyroid is the nasopharynx, salivary gland, colon-rectum and ovaries. If nasopharyngeal carcinoma or salivary gland tumors are good prognosis, others are more reserved prognosis, such as digestive carcinomas, gynecological or midline. The revelation modes are non-specific and depend on the location: mass, tumor syndrome, pain, impaired general condition. The unusual of pediatric carcinomas led to propose a systematic oncogenetic exploration...

Surgical residents cite increased income potential as a motivation for pursuing fellowship training, despite little evidence supporting this perception. Thus, our goal is to quantify the financial impact of surgical fellowship training on financial career value. By using Medical Group Management Association and Association of American Medical Colleges physician income data, and accounting for resident salary, student debt, a progressive tax structure, and forgone wages associated with prolonged training, we generated a net present value (NPV) for both generalist and subspecialist surgeons...

Adnexal torsion is the fifth most common gynecologic emergency. The vague clinical presentation and variable imaging findings make the diagnosis difficult. If suspicion for adnexal torsion is high enough based on clinical symptoms and imaging findings, prompt intervention should include conservative management with laparoscopic adnexal detorsion and ovarian preservation even in the event of a necrotic-appearing ovary because studies persistently show follicular development and ovarian function after a short time period and no increased patient morbidity...
