While pregnancy is a time of relative immunosuppression, infective endocarditis and bacterial meningitis remain rare. We present a case of a pregnant woman with Streptococcus oralis endocarditis and meningitis. This is the first reported case of Streptococcus oralis meningitis in a patient without predisposing risk factors. This case highlights the importance of collecting blood cultures in febrile illness during pregnancy and illustrates that effective management plans can be formulated without performing invasive diagnostic tests such as transesophageal echocardiography...

BACKGROUND AND AIM: The presence of blood in the stomach has been thought to affect the performance of diagnostic tests used in detecting Helicobacter pylori ( H. pylori ) in the stomach. This study evaluates the effect of upper gastrointestinal bleeding on the efficacy of a rapid urease test (RUT) and compares the results with the pathologic method. METHODS: In this descriptive study, 100 patients presented with upper gastrointestinal bleeding, confirmed from endoscopy, referred to Shahid Rahimi Hospital in Khorramabad were enrolled...

Natural Killer (NK) cells can recognize and kill Mtb -infected cells in vitro, however their role after natural human exposure has not been well-studied. To identify Mtb -responsive NK cell populations, we analyzed the peripheral blood of healthy household contacts of active Tuberculosis (TB) cases and source community donors in an endemic region of Port-au-Prince, Haiti by flow cytometry. We observed higher CD8α expression on NK cells in putative resistors (IGRA- contacts) with a progressive loss of these circulating cells during household-associated latent infection and disease...

The term "destroyed lung" signifies the complete degradation of lung tissues, typically due to chronic or recurring lung infections, with tuberculosis often identified as a primary culprit. This condition, when occurs after tuberculosis and is known as post-tubercular destroyed lung syndrome, poses considerable difficulties, especially in areas where tuberculosis is prevalent. This paper outlines a case study involving a 50-year-old Indian man afflicted with destroyed lung syndrome. Despite having undergone tuberculosis treatment three years earlier, the patient exhibited symptoms such as a dry cough, coughing up blood, and difficulty breathing...

Neonatal hypotonia presents with low muscle tone and an array of symptoms that vary depending on the etiology. The differential diagnosis for this condition is complex. It is crucial to exclude life-threatening causes before following a diagnostic algorithm and performing additional tests. Given the wide range of clinical symptoms and etiologies for neonatal hypotonia, rapid genetic testing has the potential to expedite diagnosis, reduce invasive testing such as muscle biopsy, reduce hospital stays, and guide condition management...

The immune mechanism underlying hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg) loss, particularly type I inflammatory response, during pegylated interferon-α (PEG-IFN) therapy remains unclear. In this study, we aimed to elucidate such immune mechanisms. Overall, 82 patients with chronic hepatitis B (CHB), including 41 with HBsAg loss (cured group) and 41 uncured patients, received nucleos(t)ide analogue and PEG-IFN treatments. Blood samples from all patients, liver tissues from 14 patients with CHB, and hepatic perfusate from 8 liver donors were collected for immune analysis...

BACKGROUND: Post-Operative Atrial Fibrillation (POAF) is the most frequent complication of cardiac surgery and is associated with reduced survival, increased rates of cognitive changes and cerebrovascular accidents, heart failure, renal dysfunction, infection, length of stay and hospital costs. Cardiac tamponade although less common, carries high morbidity and mortality. Shed mediastinal blood in the pericardial space is a major source of intrapericardial oxidative stress and inflammation that triggers POAF...

BACKGROUND: Studies have shown that Omicron breakthrough infections can occur at higher SARS-CoV-2 antibody levels compared to previous variants. Estimating the magnitude of immunological protection induced from COVID-19 vaccination and previous infection remains important due to varying local pandemic dynamics and types of vaccination programmes, particularly among at-risk populations such as health care workers (HCWs). We analysed a follow-up SARS-CoV-2 serological survey of HCWs at a tertiary COVID-19 referral hospital in Germany following the onset of the Omicron variant...

BACKGROUND/AIM: There are several complications of hematopoietic stem cell transplantation. Without any doubt, most important of these is aGvHD that increases transplant-related mortality. The aim of this study is to investigate whether ST-2 and Reg3α levels measured at an early stage in pediatric patients undergoing allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation can be individual biomarkers identifying future GvHD and predicting treatment response. High-density linear probes, like Neuropixels, provide an unprecedented opportunity to understand how neural populations within specific laminar compartments contribute to behavior. Marmoset monkeys, unlike macaque monkeys, have a lissencephalic (smooth) cortex that enables recording perpendicular to the cortical surface, thus making them an ideal animal model for studying laminar computations. Here we present a method for acute Neuropixels recordings in the common marmoset ( Callithrix jacchus ). The approach replaces the native dura with an artificial silicon-based dura that grants visual access to the cortical surface, which is helpful in avoiding blood vessels, ensures perpendicular penetrations, and could be used in conjunction with optical imaging or optogenetic techniques...

The aim of this study was to investigate the in vitro and in vivo antiviral effects of CLEVir-X, against porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome virus (PRRSV). CLEVir-X is a nucleoside analogue and a dialdehyde form of xanthosine. CLEVir-X demonstrated antiviral action during the in vitro portion of this experiment with its inosine monophosphate dehydrogenase (IMPDH) inhibition against PRRSV. The anti-PRRSV effect of CLEVir-X was recovered through supplementation with guanosine. This suggests that PRRSV replication may be regulated through IMPDH and its guanosine biosynthetic pathway...

Introduction Post-Neurosurgical Meningitis (PNM) is a serious medical condition with high mortality and morbidity caused by organisms like Staphylococcus aureus and Gram-negative organisms like Acinetobacter baumannii. Optimum concentration of antibiotics in the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) to treat these infections are difficult to achieve. Intraventricular antibiotic administration bypasses the blood-brain barrier and can achieve high CSF concentration without causing systemic toxicity. Methods Retrospective review of all patient records were done to identify patients who developed post-neurosurgical meningitis and received intraventricular antibiotic therapy during the period of July 2017 to December 2022...
