BACKGROUND: Common primary brain tumors are meningiomas with year incidence 3-8 cases per 100 000 people. Even though we mainly speak about benign disease, with its character and localization, it worsens the life quality to its bearer. The main therapeutic methods are neurosurgery extirpation and stereotactic radiosurgery. Despite reaching very good therapeutic results with both methods, some of the patients suffer with recurrence of the disease requiring other interventions with the risk of creating or worsening a neurological deficit...

BACKGROUND: In addition to local tumor control, the aim of any curative radio-oncological treatment is to maintain quality of life. In the treatment of patients with meningioma with a close relationship to optical structures, the preservation of visual performance is a particular challenge. Use of proton therapy can reduce the dose burden to organs at risk immediately adjacent to the tumor. The aim of this study was to score the subjective assessment of visual performance in patients with meningioma involving the optical structures before and after proton therapy...

BACKGROUND: PET of the somatostatine receptors (SSR) is a well-established functional imaging modality in the dia-gnosis of the neuroendocrine tumours (NET) of the gastro-entero-pancreatic origin (GEP). However, it can have a major impact also in other clinical entities. PURPOSE: To present a literature review focusing on the effectivity of SSR PET in the dia-gnosis beyond GEP NET. CONCLUSION: SSR PET provides an accurate dia-gnosis of pulmonary NET, pheochromocytoma and paraganglioma, it may have an important impact on their treatment and clinical management...

Background and purpose: The spinal meningeomas are one of the most common types of spinal tumors. In the treatment of spinal meningeomas, the surgical removal is the gold standard method. There are many factors that have impacts on surgical outcomes such as age, preoperative neurological condition, the extent of resection and histological grade. The aim of our article is to analyze surgical experiences, prognostic features and long-term surgical outcomes of spinal meningeomas. Methods: Retrospective database of surgically treated patients with spinal meningeomas between 2008 and 2016 was made in the National Institute of Clinical Neuroscience, Budapest, Hungary...

Meningiomas constitute a large group of tumors of the central nervous system, with the prevalence of 18%-20%. Extracranial localization of meningeomas could appear due to their extracranial origin or due to the spreading of intracranial meningeomas. In this paper, we present our 15 years' experience in the diagnosis and treatment of extra- and intracranial meningiomas invading the head-and-neck region. In the period from 2001 to 2016 at our clinic, there were five patients (three men and two women), with meningiomas of extracranial origin or meningiomas of intracranial origin, spreading into the head-and-neck region...

Recently, however, minimally invasive approaches have been attempted by some. OBJECTIVE: To investigate the feasibility and safety of minimally invasive surgery (MIS) for primary intradural spinal tumors. METHODS: Medical charts of 83 consecutive patients treated with MIS for intradural spinal tumors were reviewed...

Emerging evidence reveal that long noncoding RNAs (lncRNAs) participates in the epigenetic regulation of pathophysiological process. However, the deepgoing role of lncRNAs on meningioma is still unclear. In present study, we investigate the roles of lncRNA LINC00460 in meningeoma tissue and uncover its molecular mechanism. Results revealed that LINC00460 expression level was significantly up-regulated in meningeoma tissues and malignant meningeoma cell lines (IOMM-Lee, CH157-MN). Mechanically, loss-of-function assays showed that LINC00460 knockdown significantly suppressed the proliferation ability, increased the apoptosis and decreased the proteins (MMP-2, MMP-9, ZEB1) expression...

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: The gene of death associated protein kinase 1 (DAPK1) has been reported to be methylated in various cancers including gliomas. However, its prognostic value for gliomas is still controversy, and the methylation at specific CpG sites of DAPK1 has not been investigated. The aim of this study was to prognostically evaluate the methylation level of different CpG sites within DAPK1 promoter region in gliomas. METHODS: Based on sodium bisulfite treated DNA products, we made use of DNA pyrosequencing method to evaluate overall and site-specific methylation of DAPK1 in 143 gliomas and 26 benign tumors (meningeomas) or normal brain tissues...

BACKGROUND: Neurofibromatosis type 2 (NF2) is a genetic condition with an autosomal dominant pattern of inheritance and incomplete penetrance. It is characterized by multiple benign tumors of the central and peripheral nervous system including astrocytomas, ependymomas, meningeomas, and schwannomas, among which bilateral vestibular schwannomas are the most frequent. Among ocular manifestations of NF2, juvenile subcapsular cataract is the most common followed by epiretinal membranes and combined hamartomas of the retina and retinal pigment epithelium...

There are some indications that the prevalence of benign and malign neoplasms is increased in patients with a mitochondrial disorder (MID). This study aimed at calculating the prevalence of malign and benign neoplasms in MID patients compared to the general population. Among 103 adult patients with definite or probable MID 16 had a malignancy (15.5%) and 11 (10.7%) a benign neoplasm. Four patients had thyroid cancer, three patients had prostate cancer, two patients each colon cancer, or ovarian cancer, and one each lung cancer, basalioma, Paget carcinoma of the skin, Bowen disease, renal cancer, and urinary bladder cancer...

Long-term outcome of acute megakaryoblastic leukemia (AMKL) patients without Down's syndrome remains poor. Founding mutations and chimeric oncogenes characterize various AMKL subtypes. However, for around one third of all cases the underlying mechanisms of AMKL leukemogenesis are still largely unknown. Recently, an in-frame fusion of meningeoma 1-friend leukemia virus integration 1 (MN1-Fli1) gene was detected in a child with AMKL. We intended to investigate the potential role of this oncofusion in leukemogenesis of acute myeloid leukemia...

BACKGROUND: True multiple meningiomas are defined as meningiomas occurring at several intracranial locations simultaneously without the presence of neurofibromatosis. Though the prognosis does not differ from benign solitary meningiomas, the simultaneous occurrence of different grades of malignancy has been reported in one-third of patients with multiple meningiomas. Due to its rarity, unclear etiology, and questions related to proper management, we are presenting our case of meningiomatosis and discuss possible pathophysiological mechanisms...

UNLABELLED: The aim of the study was to access clinical and topographic features of orbitosphenopetroclival meningeomas and the results of surgical and combined treatment in patients with meningeaomas of that location. Orbitosphenopetroclival meningeomas comprise a peculiar group of tumors and are the result of infiltrative sphenopetroclival meningeomas progression, when the latter extend into the orbit and temporal fossa. Development of neurosurgery, use modern approaches and adjuvant therapies such as stereotaxic radiosurgery and radiotherapy in the past years markedly improve treatment results in these patients...
