BACKGROUND: Neurofibromatosis type 2 (NF2) is a genetic condition with an autosomal dominant pattern of inheritance and incomplete penetrance. It is characterized by multiple benign tumors of the central and peripheral nervous system including astrocytomas, ependymomas, meningeomas, and schwannomas, among which bilateral vestibular schwannomas are the most frequent. Among ocular manifestations of NF2, juvenile subcapsular cataract is the most common followed by epiretinal membranes and combined hamartomas of the retina and retinal pigment epithelium...

Experiences acquired in our department with endoscope assisted microsurgical transsphenoidal pituitary surgery encouraged us to expanded the endoscopic approach to skull base lesions. The endoscopic endonasal transsphenoidal approach proved to be less traumatic to the traditional microsurgical approaches, yet very effective. The endoscopic transsphenoidal technique was applied in a patient havin anterior skull base tumor. The patient was a 49-year-old woman with several months history of left visual defect...

There are some indications that the prevalence of benign and malign neoplasms is increased in patients with a mitochondrial disorder (MID). This study aimed at calculating the prevalence of malign and benign neoplasms in MID patients compared to the general population. Among 103 adult patients with definite or probable MID 16 had a malignancy (15.5%) and 11 (10.7%) a benign neoplasm. Four patients had thyroid cancer, three patients had prostate cancer, two patients each colon cancer, or ovarian cancer, and one each lung cancer, basalioma, Paget carcinoma of the skin, Bowen disease, renal cancer, and urinary bladder cancer...

Long-term outcome of acute megakaryoblastic leukemia (AMKL) patients without Down's syndrome remains poor. Founding mutations and chimeric oncogenes characterize various AMKL subtypes. However, for around one third of all cases the underlying mechanisms of AMKL leukemogenesis are still largely unknown. Recently, an in-frame fusion of meningeoma 1-friend leukemia virus integration 1 (MN1-Fli1) gene was detected in a child with AMKL. We intended to investigate the potential role of this oncofusion in leukemogenesis of acute myeloid leukemia...

BACKGROUND: Neuro-oncologists are familiar with primary brain tumors, intracerebral metastases meningeal carcinomatosis and extracerebral intracranial tumors as meningeoma. For these conditions, and also some other rare tumor entities several treatment options exist. Cancer can also involve structures around the brain as the dura, the base of the skull, the cavities of the skull and tissue around the bony skull, the skin, the tissue of the neck. and either compress, invade or spread in the central or peripheral nervous system...

BACKGROUND: True multiple meningiomas are defined as meningiomas occurring at several intracranial locations simultaneously without the presence of neurofibromatosis. Though the prognosis does not differ from benign solitary meningiomas, the simultaneous occurrence of different grades of malignancy has been reported in one-third of patients with multiple meningiomas. Due to its rarity, unclear etiology, and questions related to proper management, we are presenting our case of meningiomatosis and discuss possible pathophysiological mechanisms...

UNLABELLED: The aim of the study was to access clinical and topographic features of orbitosphenopetroclival meningeomas and the results of surgical and combined treatment in patients with meningeaomas of that location. Orbitosphenopetroclival meningeomas comprise a peculiar group of tumors and are the result of infiltrative sphenopetroclival meningeomas progression, when the latter extend into the orbit and temporal fossa. Development of neurosurgery, use modern approaches and adjuvant therapies such as stereotaxic radiosurgery and radiotherapy in the past years markedly improve treatment results in these patients...

OBJECTIVES: there are indications that patients with a mitochondrial disorder (MID) develop malignomas or benign tumors more frequently than the general population. The aims of the study were to find out if the prevalence of tumors is actually increased in MID-patients and which of the malignomas or benign tumors are the most frequent. METHODS: The charts of MID-patients were retrospectively evaluated for the presence of malign or benign tumors. MID was diagnosed according to the modified Walker-criteria...

In the region of the petrous bone, inner acoustic canal and cerebellopontine angle, a variety of different tissues can be found, such as bony, epithelial, neural and vascular structures. Tumorous or tumor-like lesions, vascular or bony malformations or other pathologies can therefore be found in all of these areas. We discuss various frequently occurring tumorous or tumor-like pathologies including congential lesions, such as mucoceles, inflammatory disorders including osteomyelitis, pseudotumors and Wegener's granulomatosis...

Preclinical evaluation of a 0.5 M solution of the manganese(II)- trans-1,2-diaminocyclohexane-N,N,N',N'-tetraacetate complex (Mn-DCTA, Cyclomang) has been carried out with a view to substitution of potentially toxic gadolinium-containing paramagnetic contrast agents for clinical MRI routines. The toxicological tests of Mn(II)-DCTA were performed on mice and rats. Liquid phantoms were used for evaluating the relaxivity of Mn(II)-DCTA in comparison to that of Gd(III)-DTPA and Mn-DTPA. The diagnostic imaging properties of Mn(II)-DCTA were quantitatively assessed on dogs with cerebral meningeomas (n = 10)...

Direct combination of cavitron ultrasonic surgical aspirator (CUSA) and sonic spray ionization mass spectrometry is presented. A commercially available ultrasonic surgical device was coupled to a Venturi easy ambient sonic-spray ionization (V-EASI) source by directly introducing liquified tissue debris into the Venturi air jet pump. The Venturi air jet pump was found to efficiently nebulize the suspended tissue material for gas phase ion production. The ionization mechanism involving solely pneumatic spraying was associated with that of sonic spray ionization...

The proliferation indices of immunohistochemically detected bromodeoxyuridine, Ki-67 antigen (antibodies Ki-67 and MIB 1), and proliferating cell nuclear antigen were determined manually and with computer assisted morphometry in 38 gliomas, 29 meningeomas, 9 metastases, and 16 other tumors. Comparing the markers among one another the highest correlation coefficient was found for bromodeoxyuridine and MIB 1 (0.9). The proliferation indices of all markers correlated significantly with the tumor grading. The highest correlation coefficient for proliferation index and grading (0...
