Vitamin C interferes with assays involving the redox-reaction. However, the interference of Vitamin C with electrolytes has not been reported. In the present case, we describe a 61-year-old lady with severe electrolyte abnormalities after administration of high doses of vitamin C. This patient, who had terminal colon cancer, presented to hospital with anuria. Her electrolytes were extremely abnormal (determined on the Beckman Synchron LX20): serum sodium 200 mmol/L, potassium 7.0 mmol/L, and chloride 50 mmol/L...

BACKGROUND AND AIM: High fruit and vegetable intake is associated with health benefits for cancer and cardiovascular disease. An increase is therefore integral in recommendations for the prevention of chronic disease. However, measuring intake requires either extensive dietary assessment or the measurement of specific bio-markers which is neither cheap nor feasible for the routine assessment of an individual's diet in a community or primary care setting. Within the context of a study evaluating a dietary counselling programme to increase fruit and vegetable intake our aim was to assess the use of a simple tool to estimate fruit and vegetable intake...

BACKGROUND: The validity of dietary assessment methods should be established before diet-disease associations are reported. OBJECTIVE: Our objective was to validate a 7-d food diary and a food-frequency questionnaire (FFQ) against independent biomarkers of intake in urine (nitrogen, potassium, and sodium) and blood (plasma ascorbic acid). DESIGN: A total of 146 healthy middle-aged men and women were recruited from the European Prospective Investigation into Cancer UK Norfolk cohort, a free-living cohort of approximately 25000 persons...

The purpose of this study was to investigate the possible contribution of different dietary nutrients in the development of esophageal cancer (EC) in the Caspian littoral of Iran. Forty-one cases and 145 members of their households were matched for age and gender with 40 non-blood-relative controls and 130 members of their households for their nutrient intake. A standard 24-hour dietary recall questionnaire was used to estimate the daily intake of energy, protein, P, Fe, Na, K, vitamins C and A, thiamin, riboflavin, and niacin...

The relation between selected micronutrients and oral and pharyngeal cancer risk was investigated using data from a case-control study conducted between January 1992 and November 1997 in Italy and Switzerland. Cases were 754 incident, histologically confirmed oral cancers (344 of the oral cavity and 410 of the pharynx) admitted to the major teaching and general hospitals in the study areas. Controls were 1,775 subjects with no history of cancer admitted to hospitals in the same catchment areas for acute, non-neoplastic diseases...

Various types of cancer occur in peroxidase-rich target tissues of animals exposed to aryl alcohols and amines. Unlike biotransformation by cytochrome P450 enzymes, peroxidases activate most substrates by one-electron oxidation via radical intermediates. This work analyzed the peroxidase-dependent formation of phenoxyl radicals in HL-60 cells and its contribution to cytotoxicity and genotoxicity. The results showed that myeloperoxidase-catalyzed redox cycling of phenol in HL-60 cells led to intracellular formation of glutathionyl radicals detected as GS-DMPO nitrone...

Biomarkers of nutrition intake were used to validate the dietary assessments proposed for use in the European prospective study of diet and cancer (EPIC). In the UK validation studies, the accuracy of several tested methods was assessed with weighed food records and biomarkers, 24 h urine nitrogen, potassium and plasma carotenoids and vitamin C. Correlations between dietary nitrogen intake from weighed food records and 24 h urine excretion were high (0.78-0.87). The correlations between nitrogen from estimated food diaries and urinary nitrogen were r = 0...

Patulin is immunosuppressive and there is limited evidence of its carcinogenicity in experimental animals. The International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) initiated a programme for the development of degradation techniques for the commonly investigated mycotoxins. As a part of this programme, the following techniques were tested for the degradation of patulin: treatment with ammonia, treatment with ascorbic acid, and treatment with potassium permanganate in acidic or in alkaline conditions. Patulin analysis was performed by using HPLC with UV detection...

The level of O6-methylguanine (O6MeGua) in the colonic DNA of rats treated with 1,2-dimethylhydrazine was determined. The effect of various tumorigenesis inhibitors on the formation of this modified base was also studied. Rats were given a single s.c. injection of 1,2-[14C]dimethylhydrazine. Six hr later, they were killed, and colonic DNA was extracted and analyzed by high-pressure liquid chromatography. The inhibitors tested were disulfiram (DSF), pyrazole, sodium selenite, butylated hydroxyanisole, butylated hydroxytoluene, potassium ascorbate, and 13-cis-retinoic acid...
