OBJECTIVES: Information on the long-term safety, efficacy and durability of third-generation stentless aortic valves is lacking. METHODS: In this single-centre, single-surgeon retrospective observational study, between 2003 and 2015, consecutive, non-selected aortic valve replacement (AVR) patients were implanted with the LivaNova-Sorin Pericarbon Freedom™, a third-generation stentless aortic xenograft. Changes in clinical and echocardiographic parameters were examined, as were mortality, structural valve deterioration and reoperation, according to age at 5, 10 and 14 years...

Sutureless aortic valves are increasingly used for aortic valve replacement (AVR) with excellent outcomes. Implantation requires device expansion in a subannular position within the native aortic root. We report a patient with severe aortic stenosis who received a Perceval sutureless AVR (LivaNova, London, United Kingdom), resulting in a competent prosthesis with an absence of paravalvular leak and aortic regurgitation. However, this implantation resulted in the exacerbation of mitral regurgitation. The sutureless valve required explantation, and a traditional sutured valve was subsequently implanted, which returned the mitral regurgitation to baseline...

BACKGROUND: Aortic stenosis is the most common valvular disease and has a dismal prognosis without surgical treatment. The aim of this meta-analysis was to quantitatively assess the comparative effectiveness of the Perceval (LivaNova) valve versus conventional aortic bioprostheses. METHODS AND RESULTS: A total of 6 comparative studies were identified, including 639 and 760 patients who underwent, respectively, aortic valve replacement with the Perceval sutureless valve (P group) and with a conventional bioprosthesis (C group)...

Interaction between the water adsorption ability of aluminium-oxide-based sorbents and their chemical composition, acid-base properties of the surface, and textural characteristics has been analysed. Alumina desiccants were synthesized with the centrifugal-thermal activation of gibbsite followed by the hydration of the gibbsite under mild conditions. It was demonstrated that the multicyclic adsorption regeneration of samples under realistic conditions results in structural transformations and changes in the acidity of their surfaces and water adsorption ability...

BACKGROUND: Current retrospective evidence suggests similar clinical and superior hemodynamic outcomes of the Sorin Freedom Solo stentless aortic valve (SFS) (LivaNova PLC, London, UK) compared to the Carpentier Edwards Perimount stented aortic valve (CEP) (Edwards Lifesciences Inc., Irvine, California, USA). To date, no reports exist describing case-matched long-term outcomes and analysis for treatment of native valve endocarditis (NVE). METHODS: From 2004 through 2014, 77 consecutive patients (study group, 59...

Gaseous microemboli (GME) are a potential complication of cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB). Though it is difficult to prove that GME is the only major cause of neurological deficits, it may increase the chance of post-operative cognitive dysfunction if not removed. The objectives of this research were to compare LivaNova-Sorin Inspire (Inspire) oxygenator with a Medtronic arterial filter to the Medtronic Fusion (Fusion) oxygenator with and without a Medtronic arterial filter based on each system's ability to handle GME...

Extensive mitral annulus calcifications are considered a contraindication for valve surgery. We describe the case of a 76-year-old female with severe mitral and aortic stenosis associated with extensive calcifications of the heart. The patient underwent an open mitroaortic valve replacement using transcatheter aortic valve implantation with an Edwards SAPIEN XT valve (Edwards Lifesciences Corp., Irvine, CA, USA) in the mitral position. The aortic valve was replaced using a stentless valve prosthesis (LivaNova SOLO; LivaNova PLC, London, UK)...

BACKGROUND: Surgical treatment of active prosthetic aortic valve endocarditis presents a challenge for cardiac surgeons because of tissue friability and destruction caused by infection. Sutureless prostheses, such as the Perceval S® (LivaNova, Saluggia, Italy), have emerged as an option among the different surgical approaches for these complicated cases. METHODS: This study presents data from nine patients who underwent aortic valve re-replacement with the Perceval S® due to active prosthetic aortic valve endocarditis, between January 2014 and August 2016...

BACKGROUND: Stentless aortic valves have been developed to overcome obstructive limitations associated with stented bioprostheses. A new concept of surgical sutureless (SU) bioprosthesis has been developed in the last decade. In this multi-institutional study we sought to compare hemodynamics of different bioprosthesis concept as transcatheter (TAVR), Livanova Perceval S sutureless valve and Freedom Solo Stentless (FS) valve in patients undergoing aortic valve replacement (sAVR). METHODS: From 2010 to 2016, 478 patients underwent sAVR with FS, 518 Perceval S and 367 patients underwent TAVR...

BACKGROUND: An alarming rate of early failure has been recently reported for the LivaNova (previously Sorin) Mitroflow (LivaNova, London, UK) bioprosthesis. Here, we aimed at verifying if this possible underperformance is confirmed in a large, single-center experience and identifying the risk factors associated with early deterioration. METHODS: In all, 459 Mitroflow valves have been implanted from July 2009 to December 2013 (patients' mean age 73 years; 204 women)...

BACKGROUND: The prevalence of hypo-attenuated leaflet thickening (HALT) and reduced leaflet motion (RLM) is unknown in surgically implanted bioprostheses because systematic investigation of HALT and/or RLM is limited to a few catheter-based valves. The aim of this study was to investigate the prevalence of HALT and RLM by cardiac computed tomography in patients who underwent surgical aortic valve replacement and received a Perceval sutureless aortic valve bioprosthesis. METHODS AND RESULTS: This was a single-center prospective observational study that included 47 patients (83...

BACKGROUND: Since 2013, over 100 cases of Mycobacterium chimaera prosthetic valve endocarditis and disseminated disease were notified in Europe and the USA, linked to contaminated heater-cooler units (HCUs) used during cardiac surgery. We did a molecular epidemiological investigation to establish the source of these patients' disease. METHODS: We included 24 M chimaera isolates from 21 cardiac surgery-related patients in Switzerland, Germany, the Netherlands, and the UK, 218 M chimaera isolates from various types of HCUs in hospitals, from LivaNova (formerly Sorin; London, UK) and Maquet (Rastatt, Germany) brand HCU production sites, and unrelated environmental sources and patients, as well as eight Mycobacterium intracellulare isolates...

New generation oxygenators incorporate arterial line filtration either sequential to, or directly in, the gas exchange module. This unique design may affect gas exchange performance by altering the operational characteristics of the device. The present study was designed to evaluate three oxygenators in a clinical setting using a goal-directed perfusion algorithm during cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB). After institutional review board approval, 60 adult patients undergoing cardiac surgery for acquired heart disease were matched for disease state and body size into three groups based on oxygenator type: Terumo SX18™ ( n = 20), Terumo FX15™ ( n = 20), and LivaNova Inspire6F™ 6 Dual ( n = 20)...

Despite advances in surgical techniques for mitral valve repair, more than 20% of patients require reoperation within 10 years due to recurrence of severe mitral regurgitation. However, reoperations on the mitral valve are often associated with increased morbidity and mortality. We report a transapical mitral valve-in-ring implantation in a patient who had undergone mitral valve repair for ischemic mitral regurgitation using a complete semi-rigid Memo 3D mitral ring (LivaNova Group, Milan, Italy).

SUMMARY: Reliable diagnosis of mood disorders continues to pose a challenge. This is surprising because they have been recognised clinically since classical times. Mood disorders are also common: major depressive disorder affects nearly 300 million people worldwide and bipolar affective disorder nearly 60 million and they are a major cause of disability. Nonetheless, the reliability trials of the updated Diagnostic and Statistical Manual, Fifth Edition (DSM-5) found that the reliability of the diagnosis of major depressive disorder was in the 'questionable' range...

To compare structural valve deterioration (SVD) among bioprosthetic aortic valve types, a PubMed search found 54 papers containing SVD-free curves extending to at least 10 years. The curves were digitized and fit to Weibull distributions, and the mean times to valve failure (MTTF) were calculated. Twelve valve models were collapsed into four valve types: Medtronic (Medtronic, Minneapolis, MN) and Edwards (Edwards Lifesciences, Irvine, CA) porcine; and Sorin (Sorin Group [now LivaNova], London, United Kingdom) and Edwards pericardial...
