PURPOSE: To investigate the visualization capabilities of high-speed swept-source optical coherence tomography (SS-OCT) in cataract surgery. METHODS: Cataract surgery was simulated in wet labs with ex vivo porcine eyes. Each phase of the surgery was visualized with a novel surgical microscope-integrated SS-OCT with a variable imaging speed of over 1 million A-scans per second. It was designed to provide four-dimensional (4D) live-volumetric videos, live B-scans, and volume capture scans...

Cutaneous T cell lymphomas (CTCLs), encompassing mycosis fungoides (MF) and Sézary syndrome (SS), present a complex landscape influenced by cytokines and cellular responses. In this work, the intricate relationship between these inflammatory proteins and disease pathogenesis is examined, focusing on what is known at the clinical and therapeutic levels regarding the most well-known inflammatory mediators. An in-depth look is given to their possible alterations caused by novel immunomodulatory drugs and how they may alter disease progression...

The aim of this study is to determine if post-operative patient-reported outcome measures (PROMs) are influenced by hip arthroscopy traction duration. Patients from a local prospective hip arthroscopy database were retrospectively analyzed. Four hip-specific PROMs were utilized: modified Harris Hip Score (mHHS), Hip Outcome Score-Activities of Daily Living (HOS-ADL), Hip Outcome Score-Sports Specific (HOS-SS), and international Hip Outcome Tool (iHOT). PROMs were collected pre-operatively and 6 months, 1 year and 2 years post-operatively...

BACKGROUND: Constitutive inflammation and hemostatic activation have been identified as key contributors to the pathophysiology of sickle cell disease (SCD), leading to clinical consequences such as vaso-occlusive crises and stroke. Patients with hemoglobin SS (HbSS) and hemoglobin SC (HbSC) genotypes are reported to have different symptoms, as do patients in steady-state and crisis situations. Differences among these groups remain unclear in pediatric patients. OBJECTIVES: To compare hemostatic activity in HbSS and HbSC pediatric patients during steady state, in crisis, and in clinical follow-up and compare HbSS and HbSC patients with normal healthy children...

The occurrence of vaso-occlusive crisis greatly depends on the competition between the sickling delay time and the transit time of individual sickle cells, i.e., red blood cells (RBCs) from sickle cell disease (SCD) patients, while they are traversing the circulatory system. Many drugs for treating SCD work by inhibiting the polymerization of sickle hemoglobin (HbS), effectively delaying the sickling process in sickle cells (SS RBCs). Most previous studies on screening anti-sickling drugs, such as voxelotor, rely on in vitro testing of sickling characteristics, often conducted under prolonged deoxygenation for up to 1 hour...

Polar compounds with switchable polarization properties are applicable in various devices such as ferroelectric memory and pyroelectric sensors. However, a strategy to prepare polar compounds has not been established. We report a rational synthesis of a polar CoGa crystal using chiral cth ligands ( SS -cth and RR -cth, cth = 5,7,7,12,14,14-hexamethyl-1,4,8,11-tetraazacyclotetradecane). Both the original homo metal Co crystal and Ga crystal exhibit a centrosymmetric isostructure, where the dipole moment of metal complexes with the SS -cth ligand and those with the RR -cth ligand are canceled out...

OBJECTIVE: Women with sickle cell disease (SCD) have adverse maternal and infant outcomes. Our aim was to determine whether the outcomes of SCD mothers and their infants differed from African or Caribbean women not affected by SCD and whether there were differences between SCD individuals with the haemoglobin SS (HbSS) or haemoglobin SC (HbSC) genotypes. Furthermore, we wished to determine if any differences related to deprivation. DESIGN: A matched cohort study...

In the study, we report an in situ corrosion and mass transport monitoring method developed using a radionuclide tracing technique for the corrosion study of 316L stainless steel (316L SS) in a NaCl-MgCl2 eutectic molten salt natural circulation loop. This method involves cyclotron irradiation of a small tube section with 16 MeV protons, later welds at the hot leg of the molten salt flow loop, generating radionuclides 51 Cr, 52 Mn, and 56 Co at the salt-alloy interface. By measuring the activity variations of these radionuclides at different sections along the loop, both the in situ monitoring of the corrosion attack depth of 316L SS and corrosion product transport and its precipitation in flowing NaCl-MgCl2 molten salt are achieved...

The results showed that the LRC/SS pyrolysis mitigated the environmental burden with an average improvement of 43 % across 18 impact categories compared with SS pyrolysis. Minimizing the emission of arsenic (As) is one of the urgent problems during co-gasification of Shenmu coal (SM) and sewage sludge (SS). The intrinsic mechanism of As retention was obtained by analyzing the effect of different SM addition ratios on the As form transformation during co-gasification at 1000 °C under CO2 atmosphere. The results showed that the addition of SM effectively promoted the enrichment of As in the co-gasified residues. Especially, the best As retention rate of 65.71% was achieved with the 70 wt% addition ratio of SM...
