Currently, ulcerative sexually transmitted infections, including syphilis, herpes simplex virus (HSV), lymphogranuloma venereum (LGV), chancroid, donovanosis and, more recently, monkeypox (MPOX), represent a growing challenge for health care professionals. The incidence of syphilis and LGV has increased in recent years in Spain. Additionally, HSV, syphilis and chancroid can also increase the risk of HIV acquisition and transmission. The population groups most vulnerable to these infections are young people, men who have sex with men (MSM) and commercial sex workers...

BACKGROUND & AIMS: Pouchitis is the most common complication after ileal pouch-anal anastomosis (IPAA) for ulcerative colitis (UC), however clinical and environmental risk factors for pouchitis remain poorly understood. We explored the relationship between specific clinical factors and the incidence of pouchitis. METHODS: We established a population-based cohort of all adult persons in Denmark undergoing proctocolectomy with IPAA for UC from 1996-2020. We used Cox Proportional Hazard modeling to assess the impact of antibiotic, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) exposure, and appendectomy on diagnosis of acute pouchitis in the first 2 years after IPAA surgery...

Vertebrate pigmentation patterns are highly diverse, yet we have a limited understanding of how evolutionary changes to genetic, cellular, and developmental mechanisms generate variation. To address this, we examine the formation of a sexually-selected male ornament exhibiting inter- and intraspecific variation, the egg-spot pattern, consisting of circular yellow-orange markings on the male anal fins of haplochromine cichlid fishes. We focus on Astatotilapia calliptera, the ancestor-type species of the Malawi cichlid adaptive radiation of over 850 species...

The presence of intra-specific acoustic communication in diurnal butterflies is not well established. Here, we examined the function of the tympanal ear (Vogel's organ, VO) in the seasonally polyphenic butterfly Bicyclus anynana in the context of sexual signalling. We investigated how the VO and the flanking enlarged veins, which are suggested sound resonance chambers, scale with wing size across sexes and seasonal forms, and how disruptions to the VO alter courtship behaviour and mating outcomes. We found that males have VOs similar in size to females despite having smaller wings, and dry season (DS) male cubital and anal veins do not scale with the wing size...

Elevated rates of human papillomavirus (HPV)-related anal high-grade squamous intraepithelial lesions (HSIL) and anal cancer (AC) in populations like men who have sex with men (MSM) living with HIV underscore the need for effective screening. While high-resolution anoscopy-guided biopsy is the gold standard, limited provider availability poses a challenge. This has spurred interest in identifying biomarkers for improved AC prevention. Antibodies against HPV16 oncoprotein E6, known as markers for cervical and oropharyngeal cancers, are the focus of the current study...

PURPOSE: Psychosocial distress negatively impacts coping and adaptation among young men (aged 18 to 44 years) who have sex with men (YMSM) with, or at risk of acquiring, HIV. However, the stressors and risky behaviors associated with psychosocial distress that impair viral suppression have not been clearly explicated. The current scoping review was conducted to explore the extant literature and identify research gaps. METHOD: PubMed and CINAHL were searched for peer-reviewed publications, with a total of eight articles meeting inclusion criteria...

BACKGROUND: Among men who have sex with men (MSM) and transgender women (TGW), the dynamics of human papillomavirus (HPV) infections at different anatomical sites are not well understood. Information on HPV concordance between anatomic sites can inform the extent of autoinoculation, and susceptibility of different anatomic areas to HPV infection. We described and assessed correlates of HPV concordance across anal, oral, and genital samples. METHODS: We enrolled 1876 MSM and TGW aged 18 to 26 years in 3 US cities...

BACKGROUND: In South Africa, extragenital etiological sexually transmitted infection (STI) screening among men who have sex with men (MSM) is not routinely available. The Lubricant Investigation in Men to Inhibit Transmission of human papillomavirus (HPV) Infection randomized control trial in gay, bisexual, and other men who have sex with men (gbMSM) found that carrageenan use neither reduced acquisition of anal HPV infections nor influenced infection clearance. To investigate carrageenan's lack of protective effect, we compared the change in anal HPV16 and HPV18 viral loads following carrageenan use against placebo. We restricted our analysis to participants who completed the first four study visits and had a valid baseline sample (n = 161, 54 HIV-positive)...

In the United States, HIV prevalence is increasing in rural areas, specifically among rural adolescent sexual minority males (ASMM). However, it is unclear what HIV sexual risk behaviors rural ASMM engage in and what HIV preventative services they utilize. This study aimed to (1) document the lifetime HIV sexual risk behaviors and service utilization of rural ASMM and (2) compare rural-urban differences in the prevalence of HIV sexual risk behaviors and service utilization. We analyzed data collected from 1615 ASMM who participated in a baseline survey for an online HIV prevention program from April 2018 to June 2020...

BACKGROUND: Gay or bisexual (GB) and other men who have sex with men (MSM) are disproportionately affected by human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) globally and domestically in Canada. Reliable and recent population size estimates are necessary to allocate resources to meet prevention needs and for modelling the HIV epidemic. INTRODUCTION: Pre-exposure Prophylaxis (PrEP) is a daily pill aimed at reducing HIV transmission risk when taken as prescribed. It's highly recommended for high-risk Men who have sex with Men (MSM). This study aimed to assess PrEP awareness and willingness to use it among Rwandan MSM, a critical aspect given PrEP's proven effectiveness. The findings are expected to inform policy decisions and further advance the implementation of PrEP strategies. INTRODUCTION: End-user perspectives are vital to the design of new biomedical HIV prevention products. Conjoint analysis can support the integration of end-user perspectives by examining their preferences of potential pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) products. Some clinical comparative studies have been conducted, providing evidence of its safety and oncological benefits. However, these studies are typically characterized by small sample sizes and short postoperative follow-up periods. Consequently, in this research, the authors adopt the propensity score matching method to undertake a large-scale retrospective comparative study on NOSES colectomy for left-sided colorectal cancer, with the goal of further augmenting the body of evidence-based medical support for NOSES...

Evaluating HIV preexposure prophylaxis (PrEP) use and HIV risk events concurrently remains challenging. We developed a single question method for measuring prevention-effective adherence with PrEP in self-report questionnaires.
