Arteriviruses are RNA viruses related to coronaviruses but have not yet been associated with human infection. A murine arterivirus, lactate dehydrogenase-elevating virus (LDV), was first described in 1960 and quickly became a promising model for understanding immune failure due to its unique ability to persist in immunocompetent adult mice. However, the inability to culture LDV in vitro ultimately limited this system. Here, we demonstrate that the macrophage marker CD163 is essential for LDV infection. Expression of the murine homolog (mCD163) in otherwise mCD163-negative cell lines from mice and nonhuman primates enables productive LDV infection, creating the first immortalized cell-culture system...

PURPOSE/OBJECTIVE(S): For many patients undergoing external beam radiotherapy (EBRT), distance from home to treatment center is significant and require housing in closer proximity to minimize this travel burden. Patient transport also contributes significantly to the carbon footprint of EBRT. We sought to define the difference of carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions from commuting for patients who stay at a charity housing (CH) facility during treatment for head and neck cancer (HNC) versus a commute from home...

The adsorption of anti-Salmonella rabbit immunoglobulin (IgaR) on negatively charged polymer particles leading to the formation of immunolatex was studied using various techniques comprising atomic force microscopy (AFM) and laser Doppler velocimetry (LDV). Initially, the basic physicochemical properties of IgaR molecules and the particles, inter alia their electrophoretic mobilities, the zeta potentials and hydrodynamic diameters, were determined under different ionic strengths and pHs. Applying AFM, single immunoglobulin molecules adsorbed on mica were also imaged, which allowed to determine their size...

In this paper, we introduce a novel method to realize a multi-beam optical frequency shifting component for photonic integrated circuits, utilizing an array of parallel optical modulators and a free-propagation region (FPR), such as a slab waveguide-based star coupler. This component generates multiple optical beams with different frequency shifts, making it suitable for various systems, such as multi-beam laser Doppler vibrometry (LDV). We thoroughly elaborate on the working principle of the component through theoretical analysis and demonstrate that by applying periodic wave-like modulation in the modulator array, the discrete harmonic content of the light can be selectively directed to different outputs based on the delay between consecutive modulators...

Fiber Bragg grating (FBG) sensors have been widely applied for structural health monitoring applications. In some applications, remote bonding of the optical fiber is applied, where ultrasonic waves are coupled from the structure to the optical fiber and propagated along the fiber to the FBG sensor. The distance that this signal can propagate along the optical fiber without decaying below a threshold value can be critical to the area of the structure that can be monitored per sensor. In this paper, we develop a method to measure the acoustic mode attenuation of fiber waveguides based on laser Doppler vibrometry (LDV) that is independent of the fiber type...

BACKGROUND: Storage of potato tubers is an essential stage of the supply chain, from farm to consumer, to efficiently match supply and demand. However, the quality and yield of potatoes are influenced by physiological changes during storage. METHODS: This study tested the physiological and biochemical indices in three potato varieties (YunSu 108, YunSu 304 and YunSu 306) during their dormancy periods. Accelerated fatigue testing is one potential solution to evaluate the very high cycle fatigue behavior of composite materials within a reasonable amount of time. The ultrasonic fatigue testing methodology can be adopted to realize fatigue experiments up to 109 cycles at 20 kHz, compared to conventional fatigue experiments usually carried out between 5-50 Hz. The determination of cyclic stresses during ultrasonic loading remains to be one of the major challenges. The cyclic stresses during ultrasonic fatigue loading were investigated for a carbon fiber 5H satin fabric reinforced in Polyetherketoneketone (CF-PEKK) composite material...

Developing low platinum-group-metal (PGM) catalysts for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) in proton-exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs) for heavy-duty vehicles (HDVs) remains a great challenge due to the highly demanded power density and long-term durability. This work explores the possible synergistic effect between single Mn site-rich carbon (MnSA -NC) and Pt nanoparticles, aiming to improve intrinsic activity and stability of PGM catalysts. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations predicted a strong coupling effect between Pt and MnN4 sites in the carbon support, strengthening their interactions to immobilize Pt nanoparticles during the ORR...

Within the scope of concrete internal defect detection via laser Doppler vibrometry (LDV), the acquired signals frequently suffer from low signal-to-noise ratios (SNR) due to the heterogeneity of the concrete's material properties and its rough surface structure. Consequently, these factors make the defect signal characteristics challenging to discern precisely. In response to this challenge, we propose an internal defect detection algorithm that incorporates local mean decomposition-singular value decomposition (LMD-SVD) and weighted spatial-spectral entropy (WSSE)...

BACKGROUND: Concern for drug-drug interactions leading to treatment failure and drug-resistant strains have discouraged clinicians from attempting concomitant treatment of hepatitis C virus (HCV) and tuberculosis (TB). Increased metabolism of direct-acting antivirals (DAAs) by rifamycins has hindered concurrent use. Replacing the bulky traditional optical elements in the optical system with a holographic optical element (HOE) is conducive to the functional integration and volume miniaturization. However, when the HOE is used in the infrared system, the mismatch between the recording wavelength and the working wavelength will lead to the reduction of diffraction efficiency and the introduction of aberration, which will seriously affect the performance of the optical system. This paper proposes a design and fabrication method of multifunctional infrared HOEs that can be used in laser Doppler velocimeter (LDV), which can reduce the effect of wavelength mismatch on HOE performance while integrating the functions of the optical system...

The vocal folds (VFs) are constantly exposed to mechanical stimulation leading to changes in biomechanical properties, structure, and composition. The development of long-term strategies for VF treatment depends on the characterization of related cells, biomaterials, or engineered tissues in a controlled mechanical environment. Our aim was to design, develop, and characterize a scalable and high-throughput platform that mimics the mechanical microenvironment of the VFs in vitro.
