The core breeding range of Swainson's warbler ( Limnothlypis swainsonii ) overlaps a zone of exceptionally high tornado frequency in southeastern North America. The importance of tornadoes in creating breeding habitat for this globally rare warbler and other disturbance-dependent species has been largely overlooked. This paper estimates tornado frequency (1950-2021) and forest disturbance in the 240 counties and parishes in which breeding was documented from 1988 to 2014. The frequency of destructive tornadoes (EF1-EF5) varied 6-fold across the breeding range with a peak in the Gulf Coast states...

CONTEXT.—: Non-smooth muscle uterine sarcomas are mostly represented by low-grade endometrial stromal sarcoma. However, several other rare, distinct types of uterine sarcoma are recognized, including high-grade endometrial stromal sarcoma, tumors with kinase fusions, uterine tumors resembling ovarian sex cord tumors, soft tissue-type sarcoma, and emerging entities such as KAT6A/B-rearranged tumors. The landscape of uterine sarcomas has changed, mostly because of the increasing knowledge concerning their molecular aberrations...

OBJECTIVE: Elder abuse, an important human rights issue and public health problem, contributes to increased disability and mortality. In the last decades, several reviews have synthesized primary studies to determine its prevalence. This umbrella review aimed to estimate the worldwide overall prevalence rate of elder abuse in the community and care setting. METHODS: Following prospective registration at PROSPERO (CRD42021281866) we conducted a search of eight electronic databases to identify systematic reviews from inception until 17 January 2023...

BACKGROUND: Infective endocarditis continues to be a significant concern and may be undergoing an epidemiological transition. METHODS: Were studied 1804 consecutive episodes of infective endocarditis between 1978 and 2022. The mean age was 48 ( ± 19), and 1162 (64%) patients were male. Temporal trends in demographic data, comorbidities, predisposing conditions, microorganisms, complications and in-hospital death have been studied over the decades (1978-1988, 1989-1999, 2000-2010 and 2011-2022)...

Plasmodium vivax is one of the most geographically widespread malaria parasites in the world, primarily found across South-East Asia, Latin America, and parts of Africa. One of the significant characteristics of the P. vivax parasite is its ability to remain dormant in the human liver as hypnozoites and subsequently reactivate after the initial infection (i.e. relapse infections). Mathematical modelling approaches have been widely applied to understand P. vivax dynamics and predict the impact of intervention outcomes...

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: The cancer-immunity cycle (CIC) is defined as a series of progressive events that cause an anticancer immune response leading to the killing of the cancer cell. The concept of CIC has important guiding significance for the clinical and basic tumor immunotherapy research. As one of the methods of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), Chinese herbal medicine (CHM) has shown unique advantages in multitarget and multipathway immune regulation. However, the tumor immune circulation targeted by CHM is generally unclear at present...

The genus Chisosa Huber, 2000 previously included only three species of small to tiny North American and Caribbean spiders that are rare in collections and poorly studied. Originally placed in the subfamily Ninetinae, Chisosa is currently considered a representative of Arteminae, close to the North American genus Physocyclus Simon, 1893. This placement has been suggested by molecular data, and it affects the interpretation of morphological characters that were originally thought to support the monophyly of Chisosa: they are shared with Physocyclus and thus plesiomorphic for Chisosa...

The genus Thraulus is widespread throughout much of the Eastern Hemisphere. Since Eaton established Thraulus in 1881, 62 species have, at one time or another, been placed in this genus. Thirty-eight of those species were eventually moved to other genera. Any comprehensive study of the remaining species, based on the published literature, is difficult as they were described by many authors, using different criteria, over a period of 142 years. The purpose of this study was to redescribe this genus, based on previously described species and nine new species, and to provide a format for future taxonomic and morphological studies of Thraulus...

Bauhinia glauca subsp. hupehana (Craib) T. C. Chen 1988, a member of the Leguminosae family, Cercidoideae subfamily, and Bauhinia genus, has a rich history of traditional usage in Chinese medicine. Renowned for its analgesic properties, it is commonly employed for managing inflammation and pain. This study aimed to sequence the complete chloroplast genome of B. glauca subsp. hupehana using Illumina paired-end sequencing data. The chloroplast genome spans 156,967 bp and consists of four main regions: the large single-copy (LSC) region (89,185 bp), the small single-copy (SSC) region (19,146 bp), and a pair of inverted repeats (IRs) (24,318 bp)...

Microsporum canis is a widely distributed dermatophyte, which is among the main etiological agents of dermatophytosis in humans and domestic animals. This fungus invades, colonizes and nourishes itself on the keratinized tissues of the host through various virulence factors. This review will bring together the known information about the mechanisms, enzymes and their associated genes relevant to the pathogenesis processes of the fungus and will provide an overview of those virulence factors that should be better studied to establish effective methods of prevention and control of the disease...

BACKGROUND: In Italy, there is a network of centres headed by the Italian Association of Pediatric Hematology and Oncology (AIEOP) for the diagnosis and treatment of paediatric cancers on almost the entire national territory. In semi-arid sub-Saharan Africa, climate change and the intensification of human activities have altered the hydrological balance and modified the recurrence of extreme hydroclimatic events, such as droughts and floods. The geomorphological heterogeneity of river catchments across the region, the variable human pressure, and the lack of continuous hydroclimatic data preclude the definition of proper mitigation strategies, with a direct effect on the sustainability of rural communities. Here, for the first time in Africa, we characterize hydrological extreme events using a multidisciplinary approach that includes sedimentary data from dams...
