PURPOSE: This study assesses the effects of topical oxymetazoline 0.1% on eyelid position, eye redness, and patient-perceived eye appearance in patients without severe ptosis. METHODS: This is a randomized double-blinded controlled trial conducted at a single institute. Patients aged 18-100 years were randomized to receive one drop of oxymetazoline hydrochloride 0.1% or placebo bilaterally. Marginal reflex distance (MRD) 1 and 2, palpebral fissure height, eye redness, and patient-perceived eye appearance were assessed at baseline and two hours after drop instillation...

BACKGROUND: Eyelid ptosis following periocular onabotulinumtoxinA (BoNT-A) treatment is a known complication that can be frustrating for both patients and practitioners. Iatrogenic blepharoptosis occurs due to local spread of the BoNT-A from the periocular region into the levator palpebrae superioris muscle. Although injectors should have a thorough understanding of the relevant anatomy in order to prevent it, BoNT-A induced ptosis can occur even in the most experienced hands. OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to describe a case series of patients treated effectively with topical oxymetazoline HCl 0...

Post-acne erythema (PAE) is one of the most common sequelae of acne inflammation. Unfortunately, the treatment of PAE remains challenging due to limited effective topical treatments. The objectives of this study were to evaluate the efficacy and safety of topical oxymetazoline hydrochloride (OxH) 0.05% solution for PAE. This study was a split-face, participants-and investigators-blinded, randomized, placebo-controlled trial conducted between December 2021 and March 2022 in Bangkok, Thailand. Healthy adults aged from 18 to 45 years with mild to severe PAE, according to the Clinician's Erythema Assessment (CEA), on both sides of the face were eligible...

Monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOI) are a class of drugs that were originally developed for the treatment of depression but have since been expanded to be used in management of affective and neurological disorders, as well as stroke and aging-related neurocognitive changes. Ranging from irreversible to reversible and selective to non-selective, these drugs target the monoamine oxidase (MAO) enzyme and prevent the oxidative deamination of various monoamines and catecholamines such as serotonin and dopamine, respectively...

This study observed the cutaneous analgesic effect of adrenergic agonists when combined with lidocaine. We aimed at the usefulness of 4 adrenergic agonists and epinephrine as analgesics or as tools to prolong the effect of local anesthetics using a model of cutaneous trunci muscle reflex (pinprick pain) in rats. We showed that subcutaneous 4 adrenergic agonists and epinephrine, as well as the local anesthetic bupivacaine and lidocaine, developed a concentration-dependent cutaneous analgesia. The rank order of the efficacy of different compounds (ED50 ; median effective dose) was epinephrine [0...

INTRODUCTION: Rosacea is a chronic and relapsing facial dermatosis that encompasses a wide spectrum of clinical phenotypes (transient/persistent erythema, telangiectasias, papules/pustules, edema, phymatous changes, and ocular symptoms) often with uncomfortable symptoms such as flushing, pain, burning, edema, and dryness. Current pharmacological treatment includes topical agents, spanning from several conventional (azelaic acid, metronidazole, sodium sulfacetamide) to new ones (brimonidine, oxymetazoline, ivermectine, minocycline), and systemic agents (doxycycline 40 mg modified-release), all Food and Drug Administration approved...

Introduction In the current otorhinolaryngology practice, technology has always been an essential part. Therefore, diagnostic nasal endoscopy (DNE) has become a vital examination in today's practice. In order to visualize the nasal cavity in a systematic manner without any discomfort to both patient and doctor, the nose should be well anesthetized and decongested. Objective The study is to compare and evaluate the efficacy of 4% lignocaine-oxymetazoline cotton pledget packing versus topical sprays in the preparation of nasal cavities for DNE...

Common risk factors for epistaxis include nasal irritants, nasal/facial oxygen use, certain systemic conditions (e.g., hypertension and coagulopathies) and medication use (e.g., anticoagulants and intranasal medications). This study examined risk factors for and management of epistaxis in patients admitted for other medical conditions who developed an episode of epistaxis during their hospital admission...

α2-adrenoceptors, (α2A, α2B and α2C-subtypes), are Gi-coupled receptors. Central activation of brain α2A and α2C-adrenoceptors is the main site for α2-agonist mediated clinical responses in hypertension, ADHD, muscle spasm and ITU management of sedation, reduction in opiate requirements, nausea and delirium. However, despite having the same Gi-potency in functional assays, some α2-agonists also stimulate Gs-responses whilst others do not. This was investigated. Agonist responses to 49 different α-agonists were studied (CRE-gene transcription, cAMP, ERK1/2-phosphorylation and binding affinity) in CHO cells stably expressing the human α2A, α2B or α2C-adrenoceptor, enabling ligand intrinsic efficacy to be determined (binding KD /Gi-IC50 )...

The over-the-counter nasal decongestant oxymetazoline (eg, Afrin) is used in the pediatric population for a variety of conditions in the operating room setting. Given its vasoconstrictive properties, it can have cardiovascular adverse effects when systemically absorbed. There have been several reports of cardiac and respiratory complications related to use of oxymetazoline in the pediatric population. Current US Food and Drug Administration approval for oxymetazoline is for patients ≥6 years of age, but medical professionals may elect to use it short-term and off label for younger children in particular clinical scenarios in which the potential benefit may outweigh risks (eg, active bleeding, acute respiratory distress from nasal obstruction, acute complicated sinusitis, improved surgical visualization, nasal decongestion for scope examination, other conditions, etc)...

This updated and upgraded S2k guideline deals with the diagnosis and treatment of rosacea, which is a common, chronic inflammatory skin disease mostly affecting the face. Initially, rosacea is characterized by recurrent erythema, telangiectasia and flushing. Later, the inflammatory component predominates, with persistent erythema with follicular papules, papulopustules and pustules. The development of phyma, which usually occurs on the acral localizations, is the most severe manifestation. For the treatment of rosacea, the interdisciplinary guideline committee, with representatives of the German Dermatological Society (DDG), the Professional Association of German Dermatologists (BVDD), the German Opthalmological Society (DOG), the Society for Dermopharmacy (GD), the Swiss Society for Dermatology and Venereology (SGDV) and the German Rosacea Aid e...

BACKGROUND: Oxymetazoline hydrochloride ophthalmic solution (0.1%) is a medication used to treat blepharoptosis. Patients who suffer from blepharoptosis have low-lying eyelids that can hinder their vision. Oxymetazoline hydrochloride ophthalmic solution (0.1%) is prescribed to patients to improve their vision by lifting the upper eyelids. Blepharospasm consists of involuntary, bilateral orbicularis oculi muscle movements that result in twitching and eyelid closure. Botulinum toxin is a treatment used to treat blepharospasm by preventing muscle contraction; but it is not always effective...
