Motor learning involves plasticity in a network of brain areas across the cortex and cerebellum. Such traces of learning have the potential to affect subsequent learning of other tasks. In some cases, prior learning can interfere with subsequent learning, but it may be possible to potentiate learning of one task with a prior task if they are sufficiently different. Because prism adaptation involves extensive neuroplasticity, we reasoned that the elevated excitability of neurons could increase their readiness to undergo structural changes, and in turn, create an optimal state for learning a subsequent task...

Xanthophylls, such as lutein and zeaxanthin, have several functions in both plants and humans, including detoxification of oxidants (reactive oxygen species (ROS) and other radicals), maintenance of the structural and functional integrity of biological membranes, and photoprotection from intense light damage. The objective of the present study was to investigate the lutein and zeaxanthin content of 21 species of plants from a very humid premontane forest in Colombia during both dry and rainy seasons. The plants were selected based on being voluntarily eaten by laying hens under free-range conditions...

The purpose of this study was to compare the differences in the content of functional nutrients in eggs, performance parameters, and egg quality parameters of different chicken breeds. In Trial 1, 150 41-week-old hens of each breed, including the Dwarf Layer, White Leghorn, Silky fowl, Beijing-you chicken, and Shouguang chicken, were randomly assigned to the control (CON) and 2.5% flaxseed oil (FSO) groups to compare the difference in n-3 polyunsaturated fatty acid (PUFA) content in eggs. The contents of α-linolenic acid (ALA), eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA), docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), and total n-3 PUFA in eggs were increased ( p < 0...

Marigold ( Tagetes spp.) flower petals are the most vital sources of carotenoids, especially lutein esters, for the production of natural lutein to use for food, feed, and pharmaceutical industries. Several marigold cultivars are cultivated globally; however, their lutein ester composition and contents have not been widely investigated. Considering this, this study aimed to identify and quantify prominent carotenoid esters from the flower petals of ten marigold cultivars by liquid chromatography (LC)-diode-array detection (DAD)-mass spectrometry (MS)...

There are lines of evidence that ionizing radiations such as gamma rays can cause different biological effects on plants. Marigold (Calendula officinalis L.) is a member of the family Asteraceae. It possesses profound amounts of active ingredients. The aim of this study was to evaluate the changes imposed upon different dose levels of gamma radiation on some features of Calendula officinalis such as antioxidant activity, total phenolic compounds and flavonoid contents, antibacterial activity and genomic alterations...

However, it remains a challenge to develop a facile method to produce poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) microspheres with special morphologies. Herein, a micron-sized marigold-like poly(vinyl alcohol) (CE -PVATPA ) microsphere was engineered and fabricated by a feasible strategy, that is, emulsification-cross-linking, freeze-drying, and secondary acetal reaction steps...

BACKGROUND: Saffron has gained people's attention and love for its unique flavor and valuable edible value, but the problem of saffron adulteration in the market is also serious. It is urgent for us to find a simple and rapid identification and quantitative estimation of adulteration in saffron. Therefore, the excitation-emission matrix fluorescence combined with multi-way chemometrics was proposed for the detection and quantification of adulteration in saffron. RESULTS: The fluorescence composition analysis of saffron and saffron adulterants (safflower, marigold and madder) were accomplished by alternating trilinear decomposition algorithm (ATLD)...

Precise charge transfer modification and efficient activation of peroxymonosulfate are effective methods for increasing photocatalytic efficiency. Here, BiOBr/MnCo2 O4 photocatalysts with abundant Mn-Br bonds were generated by immobilizing the exposed {110} facets of BiOBr in the marigold-like MnCo2 O4 . The prepared BiOBr/MnCo2 O4 retained the marigold-like morphology of MnCo2 O4 while exhibiting good adsorption properties and interface contact effects. More importantly, the interfacial Mn-Br bond between MnCo2 O4 and BiOBr functioned as charge transport bridges, allowing for a directional transfer channel and lowering the potential energy barrier for interfacial charge transfer...

Marigold (Tagetes erecta) is an annual herbaceous flower belonging to Asteraceae, whose capitulum is composed of bilateral symmetry ray florets on the outer periphery and radial symmetry disk florets on the inside. The flower symmetry evolution from radial symmetry to bilateral symmetry has changed the morphology, inflorescence architecture and function of florets among several lineages in Asteraceae. Several studies have identified that CYC2 genes in TCP transcription factor family are the key genes regulating the flower morphogenesis, such as corolla symmetry and stamen development...

The antiulcer mechanisms of the dry extract of T. erecta flowers (DETe) were studied here. The acute ulcers induced by acidified ethanol or indomethacin were reproduced in mice pretreated with DETe (3 - 300 mg/kg). The antiulcer activity of DETe was also verified in mice pretreated with NEM, L-NAME, indomethacin, or yohimbine. The antisecretory effect of DETe was verified in rats, and its anti-Helicobacter pylori activity was determined in vitro. DETe (300 mg/kg, p.o) reduced the ethanol- or indomethacin-induced ulcer by 49 and 93%, respectively...
