The integration of artificial intelligence (AI) in healthcare, particularly in the field of dermatology, has experienced significant progress through the creation of advanced tools such as the Large Language and Vision Assistant (LLaVA). This comprehensive review examines whether LLaVA represents a significant breakthrough or merely a passing trend in dermatological practice. By incorporating both language and visual analysis capabilities, LLaVA aims to support enhanced diagnostic accuracy, patient engagement, and customized treatment planning, as evidenced by current research and case studies...

Biosimilars are biologic agents the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has deemed to have no clinical difference from their reference biologics. In dermatology,  biosimilars are approved for the treatment of psoriasis and hidradenitis suppurativa. Although dermatologists are high prescribers of biologics, they are more reluctant to prescribe biosimilars than other specialists. This survey-based study sought to characterize dermatologists’ current perspectives on biosimilars.  Methods: A 27-question survey was distributed via email to dermatologists between September and October of 2022...

Introduction Topical corticosteroids are a valuable tool for treating many dermatoses, offering anti-inflammatory and immunosuppressive properties. However, preexisting knowledge gaps and safety concerns may hinder treatment compliance. This study aims to evaluate knowledge and attitudes towards topical corticosteroids among former users within the general population of Saudi Arabia. Methods This cross-sectional study utilized an online survey to collect data. Knowledge was assessed through three dimensions: indications, proper use, and adverse reactions...

Description Acne vulgaris is a common inflammatory skin condition of the pilosebaceous unit in adolescents and young adults and is primarily characterized by the presence of open and closed comedones. In patients of various skin pigmentations, skin-colored comedones may be difficult to appreciate and lead to incorrect or delayed diagnosis of acne. To aid in the identification of acne vulgaris in patients of various skin pigmentations, we present comedonal acne in different skin types and commonly encountered differential diagnoses...

Sebaceous cysts are a prevalent form of benign cutaneous cysts that often manifest as epidermal cysts when their size exceeds 5 cm in diameter. Despite their infrequent occurrence, cases of massive epidermal cysts measuring 5 cm or larger have been documented. Malignant transformations within epidermal cysts are exceedingly rare but not impossible. Although their development into malignancies is a rare event, it is essential to acknowledge the potential for benign epidermal cysts to undergo such transformation...

Smartwatches have proven life-saving in medical specialties such as cardiology. Smartwatches actively warn us of arrhythmia risk and loud noise exposure. However, dermatologic health metrics are rarely monitored, and users are never alerted of potential skin health issues. Furthermore, the role of these devices within dermatology has not been evaluated in the literature. This study aims to analyze the current data points monitored by smartwatches and discuss potential adaptations to support dermatologic patient education and improve clinical management...

We aimed to identify the main cosmetic ingredients with suspected endocrine-disrupting properties, and analyse their presence in current marketed products. Particular attention was given to products intended for susceptible (due to physiological status) and vulnerable (due to specific pathologies) groups with a view to informing cosmetologists and related health professionals of the scientific basis and current status of any concerns...

BACKGROUND: Psoriatic disease (PsD), including plaque psoriasis (PsO) and psoriatic arthritis (PsA), comprises a wide spectrum of manifestations and significantly impacts quality-of-life (QoL). Here, we assessed patients' understanding of PsO and PsA as a systemic disease, its impact on their physical and emotional well-being, and patients' experiences with healthcare professionals for shared treatment decision-making. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The Global Psoriatic Disease and Beyond Survey was a cross-sectional, qualitative, online survey conducted on patients with moderate-to-severe PsO with/without concomitant PsA...

We report the case of a newborn with aplasia cutis congenita characterized by the absence of skin in the left parietal region, superficial dilatation of the scalp veins, facial dysmorphia, limb anomalies, and severe intrauterine growth retardation. Maternal milk enabled the baby to gain weight, and dermatological treatment was performed for scarring of the vertex. Psychomotor development and stature were spectacular. Background: Pediatric oncology patients receive multiple modalities of therapy to treat their malignancies. These modalities have the potential for acute toxicity and late effects. In the last decade, a new modality known as targeted biological therapy, has become an integral part of treatment for pediatric cancers. As targeted therapy use has increased, adverse events specific to these targeted agents have emerged, requiring a new effort focused on providing education to patients and families regarding how best to report, monitor, and manage these adverse events...

Introduction This study presents an innovative model of integrated dermatology service delivery. Kauri HealthCare (KHC) is a general practice serving around 19 000 patients in Palmerston North, New Zealand. A 'mini clinic' is provided by an on-site dermatologist that is available for patients of KHC. Referring practitioners are required to attend with the patient to present their case and seek dermatologist input. This allows for patients to receive a specialist opinion, as well as for the referrer to receive practical and academic teaching, record findings, and arrange any further investigations, follow-up, or management...

Social media has established its place in our daily lives, especially with the advent of the COVID-19 pandemic. It has become the leading source of information for dermatological literacy on various topics, ranging from skin diseases to everyday skincare and cosmetic purposes in the present digital era. Accumulated evidence indicates that accurate medical content constitutes only a tiny fraction of the exponentially growing dermatological information on digital platforms, highlighting an unmet patient need for access to evidence-based information on social media...
