Antibiotics are widely used in medicine, but they are not fully metabolized in the body and can end up in wastewater. Conventional wastewater treatment methods fail to completely remove antibiotic residues, which can then enter rivers and streams. Adsorption is a promising technique for removing antibiotics from wastewater, even at low concentrations. The successful one-pot synthesis of an adsorbent, iron-containing porphyrin-based porous organic polymer (Fe-POP), was achieved through the reaction of pyrrole groups and terephthalaldehyde in the presence of FeCl3 ...

How to realize efficient treatment of coal slime generated by a coal washing operation is an urgent problem to be solved in this industry. The presence of clay minerals, especially highly hydrophilic montmorillonite (MMT), is the key to the poor treatment effect of coal slime. Polyacrylamide (PAM) is very popular as a polymer agent to improve the treatment of coal slime. However, when it is used to treat coal slime with a high content of MMT, the selection of PAM type and the mechanism of action are still lacking...

Loss of PTEN tumor suppressor is an important event during colorectal cancer (CRC) development and is a target for therapeutic exploitation. This study reports that bromodomain and extra-terminal motif (BET) is a synthetic lethal partner of PTEN in CRC. BET inhibition (BETi) selectively induced G1 cell cycle arrest and apoptosis in PTEN-/- CRC. Further, BETi selectively and dose-dependently suppressed the growth of PTEN-/- CRC tumor xenografts in mice and patient-derived organoids. Mechanistically, PTEN-deficient CRC cells elevated the level of cytoplasmic p21CIP1/WAF1 that is hyper-phosphorylated at Thr145 by AKT...

Carbons form critical components in biogas purification and energy storage systems and are used to modify polymer matrices. The environmental impact of producing carbons has driven research interest in biomass-derived carbons, although these have yield, processing, and resource competition limitations. Naturally formed fungal filaments are investigated, which are abundantly available as food- and biotechnology-industry by-products and wastes as cost-effective and sustainable templates for carbon networks. Pyrolyzed Agaricus bisporus and Pleurotus eryngii filament networks are mesoporous and microscale with a size regime close to carbon fibers...

The growing textile industry produces large volumes of hazardous wastewater containing dyes, which stresses the need for cheap, efficient adsorbing technologies. This study investigates a novel preprocessing method for producing activated carbons from abundantly available softwood bark. The preprocessing involved a continuous steam explosion preconditioning step, chemical activation with ZnCl2 , pyrolysis at 600 and 800 °C, and washing. The activated carbons were subsequently characterized by SEM, XPS, Raman and FTIR prior to evaluation for their effectiveness in adsorbing reactive orange 16 and two synthetic dyehouse effluents...

In the present work, the biomass of Aspergillus flavus (AF) was modified using magnetic nanoparticles MnFe2 O4 and metal-organic framework of ZIF-67, and its ability to remove tetracycline antibiotic (TCH) was investigated. With the help of physicochemical tests, AF biomass modification with ZIF-67 and MnFe2 O4 magnetic nanoparticles was confirmed. Based on the BET value, AF-MnFe2 O4 -ZIF-67 (139.83 m2 /g) has a higher surface value than AF (0.786 m2 /g) and AF/MnFe2 O4 (17.504 m2 /g). Also, the magnetic saturation value revealed that the modified biomass can be isolated from the treated solution using a simple magnetic field...

The resulting polymers were obtained in excellent yields and displayed weight-average molecular weights ( M w ) ranging from 12.2 to 20.2 kg/mol with polydispersity indices ( M w / M n ) ranging between 1.8 and 2.4, suggesting that the molecular masses are narrowly distributed and thus implying homogeneous polymer chains...
