BACKGROUND: Childhood obesity is a complex healthcare problem that affects all aspects of a child's health. The American Academy of Pediatrics and the Expert Committee recommends that all children be evaluated for current medical conditions including the risk for obesity by identifying elevated body mass index (BMI), physical activity habits, and diet. Childhood obesity is defined as a BMI of 95th percentile or greater on standardized age-based growth charts. Abdominal and visceral fat mass has a negative effect on bone formation during childhood and adolescence...

Kawasaki disease (KD) is a form of systemic vasculitis. Regarding its pathogenesis, HAMP gene encoding hepcidin, which is significant for iron metabolism, has a vital function. In this study, we recruited a total of 381 KD patients for genotyping. Data from 997 subjects (500 subjects from cohort 1; 497 subjects from cohort 2) were used for analysis. Using TaqMan allelic discrimination, we determined five tag SNPs (rs916145, rs10421768, rs3817623, rs7251432, and rs2293689). Treatment outcome data related to such clinical phenotypes as coronary artery lesions (CAL), coronary artery aneurysms (CAA), and intravenous immunoglobulin (IVIG) effects were also collected...

In children, little is known about lipid profiles and the influence of dietary habits. In the past, we developed a dietary advice for optimizing the immune system, which comprised green vegetables, beef, whole milk, and full-fat butter. However, there are concerns about a possible negative influence of the full-fat dairy products of the diet on the lipid profile. We investigated the effect of the developed dietary advice on the lipid profile and BMI (body mass index)/BMI-z-score of children. In this retrospective cohort study, we included children aged 1-16 years, of whom a lipid profile was determined in the period between June 2011 and November 2013 in our hospital...

BACKGROUND: Many of the world's population have hearing loss in one ear; current statistics indicate that up to 10% of the population may be affected. Although the detrimental impact of bilateral hearing loss, hearing aids, and cochlear implants upon music appreciation is well recognized, studies on the influence of single-sided deafness (SSD) are sparse. PURPOSE: We sought to investigate whether a single-sided hearing loss can cause problems with music appreciation, despite normal hearing in the other ear...

AIMS: An increase in the prevalence of antimicrobial resistance among gram-negative pathogens has been noted recently.[1] A challenge in empiric treatment of complicated intra-abdominal infection (cIAI) is identifying initial appropriate antibiotic therapy, which is associated with reduced length of stay and mortality compared with inappropriate therapy. The objective of this study was to assess the cost-effectiveness of ceftolozane/tazobactam+metronidazole compared with piperacillin/tazobactam (commonly used in this indication) in the treatment of patients with cIAI in United Kingdom (UK) hospitals...

OBJECTIVE: Intracranial meningiomas are typically benign extracerebral tumors derived from dural arachnoid cells. Predominantly, these tumors are effectively managed surgically, but the prognosis is heavily dependent on tumors' histological heterogeneity and its location. It is known that reproductive and hormonal factors increase the risk for meningioma in adult females, but their prognostic value still remains controversial. This study's aim was to examine possible correlation between tumor location and outcome, and to evaluate prognostic value of the proposed simple tumor localization scale in predicting the management outcome of intracranial meningioma...
