Background: Limited therapeutic options are available for Fontan patients with dysfunctional or failing single ventricle physiology. This study describes the evaluation of an alternative, non-invasive, at-home therapeutic compression treatment for Fontan patients. Our hypothesis is that routinely administered, externally applied compression treatments to the lower extremities will augment systemic venous return, improve ventricular preload, and thus enhance cardiac output in Fontan patients...

The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of pneumatic compression pants on postexercise glycogen resynthesis. Active male subjects (n = 10) completed 2 trials consisting of a 90-minute glycogen depleting ride, followed by 4 hours of recovery with either a pneumatic compression device (PCD) or passive recovery (PR) in a random counterbalanced order. A carbohydrate beverage (1.8 g·kg bodyweight) was provided at 0 and 2 hours after exercise. Muscle biopsies (vastus lateralis) were obtained immediately and 4 hours after exercise for glycogen analyses...

Arteriovenous malformations have a wide range of clinical presentations and an unfortunately unpredictable response to both nonsurgical and surgical intervention. The authors report on the surgical treatment of a 19-year-old man with a complex lower extremity arteriovenous malformation, previously unsuccessfully treated with numerous local sclerotherapy and interventional radiology embolization procedures leading to massive tissue necrosis and deep infection. The patient was definitively treated with wide excision of the necrotic tissue, coils, and arteriovenous malformation, but with preservation of the tibial nerve and vascular supply to the foot...
