isotonic saline in elderly men

R G Hahn, M Nyberg Isacson, T Fagerström, J Rosvall, C R Nyman
Isotonic saline is a widely-used infusion fluid, although the associated chloride load may cause metabolic acidosis and impair kidney function in young, healthy volunteers. We wished to examine whether these effects also occurred in the elderly, and conducted a crossover study in 13 men with a mean age of 73 years (range 66-84), who each received intravenous infusions of 1.5 l of Ringer's acetate and of isotonic saline. Isotonic saline induced mild changes in plasma sodium (mean +1.5 mmol.l(-1) ), plasma chloride (+3 mmol...

BACKGROUND: Benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) is a prevalent entity in elderly men. If medical treatment fails, monopolar transurethral resection of the prostate (TUR-P) is still considered as the standard treatment. The proportion of high-risk patients with cardiac comorbidities increases and TUR-P goes along with a relevant perioperative risk. Especially large volume influx of irrigation fluid and transurethral resection syndrome (TUR syndrome) represent serious threats to these patients...

PURPOSE: The aims of this study were to investigate how elderly people handle single-use eye drop dispensers (unit-dose pipettes) and to compare the performance with conventional eye drop bottles. METHODS: In this open-label study, the handling of unit-dose pipettes and conventional eye drop bottles was compared in 41 elderly people who had little or no prior regular use of eye drop dispensers. The participants tested both types of dispenser once, and the following 7 variables were studied: ease/difficulty of opening the dispenser; influence of the size for handling of the dispenser; influence of the shape for handling of the dispenser; observation of the contents in the dispenser; the feeling of the dispenser in the hand; ease/difficulty of drop instillation on the eye from the dispenser; and overall performance of the eye drop dispenser...

OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to assess the effect of various power settings of the potassium-titanyl-phosphate (KTP) green laser on the vaporization of biological tissue under water and its potential and feasibility to treat patients with benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) and other urological disorders. BACKGROUND DATA: BPH, ureteral strictures, and bladder tumors are common urological diseases in elderly men. KTP green laser vaporization is a safe and effective procedure used to treat urological diseases...

BACKGROUND: Treatment with thiazide diuretics is among the most frequent causes of severe hyponatremia. Previous reports indicate that elderly women develop more severe manifestations than men. The risk of developing hyponatremia increases when thiazide diuretics are given simultaneously with NSAIDs. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Three typical case-stories are presented, all cases being admitted to hospital with a tentative diagnosis of cerebrovascular stroke. RESULTS: It is shown that hyponatremia can give rise to a broad spectrum of symptoms, ranging from unspecific dizziness and headache to alarming neurological symptoms involving lethargy and severe confusion...

In response to water deprivation or heat stress, healthy elderly men experience reduced thirst compared with a young control group. Because water deprivation and heat stress produce hypertonicity as well as reduced extracellular fluid volume, the aim of this study was to determine whether the elderly also experience reduced thirst in response to hypertonicity without extracellular fluid volume depletion. To achieve this, after an overnight fast, healthy community-dwelling nonsmoking old (65-78 yr, n = 7) and young (20-32 yr, n = 7) men received 120-min hypertonic (0...
