Grape pomace is a by-product of winemaking process and rich in bioactive compounds such as plant polyphenols having antioxidant and antimicrobial activities. As known, oxidative stress may cause a number of pathological conditions in farm animals and thus affecting animal welfare and production. Moreover, pathogenic bacteria affect animals' health status. Thus, the objective of this study was to investigate whether lambs' feed supplemented with grape pomace enhances the antioxidant mechanisms and reduces the growth of pathogenic bacteria...

BACKGROUND: Increased consumption of high-fat diets is associated with the development of insulin resistance and type 2 diabetes. Current models to study the mechanisms of high-fat diet-induced IR in humans are limited by their long duration or low efficacy. In the present study we developed and characterized an acute dietary model of saturated fatty acid-enriched diet induced insulin resistance. METHODS: High caloric diets enriched with saturated fatty acids (SFA) or carbohydrates (CARB) were evaluated in subjects with normal and impaired glucose tolerance (NGT or IGT)...

A rapid increase was observed in the incidence of extensively drug-resistant Acinetobacter baumannii (XDR Aba) isolates in a Greek hospital during 2014. To investigate the causes of this rise, the antimicrobial resistance profiles of all carbapenem-resistant (CARB-R) Aba isolates recovered during 2014-2015 were determined. Selected XDR Aba isolates (n = 13) were characterized by molecular methods. XDR Aba (48 isolates) represented 21.4% of the 224 CARB-R Aba recovered during the study period. The 13 selected XDR Aba isolates were positive for the blaOXA-23, the intrinsic blaOXA-51, and the adeB gene of the AdeABC efflux pump, and all belonged to the 3LST ST101, corresponding to the international clone II...

The filamentous fungus Phycomyces blakesleeanus provides a renewable biosource of industrial high-value compounds such as carotenes, other isoprenoids (ubiquinone and sterols), organic acids and fatty acids. Several Phycomyces mutants involved in the formation of β-carotene are available. For example, the carA mutants have a leaky mutation in the phytoene synthase and produce significantly lower amounts of carotenes, while the carB and carR mutants produce phytoene and lycopene, respectively, due to a null mutation in the genes encoding the phytoene dehydrogenase and lycopene cyclase, respectively...

Identification of defined cell populations with stem/progenitor properties is key for understanding prostate development and tumorigenesis. Here we show that the polycomb repressor protein Bmi1 marks a population of castration-resistant luminal epithelial cells enriched in the mouse proximal prostate. We employ lineage tracing to show that these castration-resistant Bmi1-expressing cells (or CARBs) are capable of tissue regeneration and self-renewal. Notably, CARBs are distinct from the previously described luminal castration-resistant Nkx3...

BACKGROUND & AIMS: Modification of the amount and type of dietary fat has diverse effects on cardiovascular risk. METHODS: We recruited 54 abdominally obese subjects to participate in a prospective cross-over design, single-blind trial comparing isocaloric 2000 kcal MUFA or carbohydrate-enriched diet with SFA-enriched diet (control). The control diet consisted of 15E% protein, 53E% carbohydrate and 32E% fat (12E% SFA, 13E% MUFA). A total of ∼7E% of MUFA or refined carbohydrate was exchanged with SFA in the MUFA-rich and carbohydrate-rich diets respectively for 6-weeks...

α-Fluorinated β-amino thioesters were obtained in high yields and stereoselectivities by organocatalyzed addition reactions of α-fluorinated monothiomalonates (F-MTMs) to N-Cbz- and N-Boc-protected imines. The transformation requires catalyst loadings of only 1 mol % and proceeds under mild reaction conditions. The obtained addition products were readily used for coupling-reagent-free peptide synthesis in solution and on solid phase. The α-fluoro-β-(carb)amido moiety showed distinct conformational preferences, as determined by crystal structure and NMR spectroscopic analysis...

Little is known about energy yield during exercise in the heat in boys compared to men. To investigate substrate utilization with and without exogenous carbohydrate (CHOexo) intake, seven boys (11.2 ± 0.5 yrs) and nine men (24.0 ± 3.3 yrs) cycled (4×20 min bouts) at a fixed metabolic heat production (H(.)p) per unit body mass (6 W×kg(-1)) in a climate chamber (38°C and 50% relative humidity), on two occasions. Participants consumed a (13)C-enriched 8% CHO beverage (CARB) or placebo beverage (CONT) in a double-blinded, counter balanced manner...

The crystal structure of disodium hydrogen citrate sesquihydrate, 2Na2 (+)·C6H6O7 (2-)·1.5H2O, has been solved and refined using laboratory X-ray single-crystal diffraction data, and optimized using density functional techniques. The asymmetric unit contains two independent hydrogen citrate anions, four sodium cations and three water molecules. The coordination polyhedra of the cations (three with a coordination number of six, one with seven) share edges to form isolated 8-rings. The un-ionized terminal carb-oxy-lic acid groups form very strong hydrogen bonds to non-coordinating O atoms, with O⋯O distances of 2...

The title compound, [Co(C8H8BrN4O)2]NO3·C3H7NO, is formed of discrete [CoL 2](+) cations, nitrate anions and di-methyl-formamide (DMF) mol-ecules of crystallization. The cation has no crystallographically imposed symmetry. The ligand mol-ecules are deprotonated at the phenol O atom and octa-hedrally coordinate the Co(III) atoms through the azomethine N and phenolate O atoms in a mer configuration. The deprotonated ligand mol-ecules adopt an almost planar conformation. In the crystal lattice, the cations are arranged in layers in the ab plane divided by the nitrate anions and solvent mol-ecules...

The title compound, [Sn(C4H9)2(C6H5COO)2], was synthesized in order to study the inter-action between di-n-butyl-tin(IV) oxide and some carb-oxy-lic acids. Di-n-butyl-tin(IV) dibenzoate, nBu2Sn(obz)2, exhibits the same structural features as other diorganotin(IV) dibenzoates characterized by an unsymmetrical bidentate bonding mode [Δ(Sn-O) ≃ 0.4 Å] of the two benzoate groups to tin. In a first approximation, the coordination sphere at tin resulting from the two stronger bonded O atoms [2.1227 (17) and 2...

The mol-ecular shape of the title compound, C16H12O7, is bent around the central CH2-O bond. The two benzene rings are almost perpendicular to one another, making a dihedral angle of 87.78 (7)°. In the crystal, each mol-ecule is linked to three others by three pairs of O-H⋯O hydrogen bonds, forming undulating sheets parallel to the bc plane and enclosing R 2 (2)(8) ring motifs. The sheets are linked by C-H⋯O hydrogen bonds and C-H⋯π inter-actions, forming a three-dimensional network.
