OBJECTIVE: To evaluate feasibility and initial outcomes of fetoscopic tracheal occlusion for severe diaphragmatic hernia compared with a historical cohort who had not received fetal tracheal occlusion. METHODS: Outcomes in a prospective observational cohort who underwent fetoscopic tracheal occlusion for severe fetal left diaphragmatic hernia without associated anomalies were compared with our historical nontreated cohort of matched fetuses of similar severity. Fetuses were classified using the same ultrasonography and magnetic resonance imaging methodology-prospectively in the fetoscopic tracheal occlusion group and retrospectively in the historical nontreated cohort...

BACKGROUND: Placenta previa, one of the most severe obstetric complications, carries an increased risk of intraoperative massive hemorrhage. Several risk factors for intraoperative hemorrhage have been identified to date. However, the correlation between birth weight and intraoperative hemorrhage has not been investigated. Here we estimate the correlation between birth weight and the occurrence of intraoperative massive hemorrhage in placenta previa. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We included all 256 singleton pregnancies delivered via cesarean section at our hospital because of placenta previa between 2003 and 2015...

We report on an abdominal pregnancy in human immunodeficiency virus-positive mother, currently on antiretroviral therapy, which was discovered incidentally while training the obstetric ultrasound capacity building program. Although abdominal pregnancy is a rare form of ectopic pregnancy, it may be more common in women with HIV infection because they tend to have a higher rate of sexually transmitted diseases than the general population. The positive diagnosis of abdominal pregnancy is difficult to establish and is usually missed during prenatal assessment particularly in settings that lack routine ultrasound examination as is the case in most developing countries...

INTRODUCTION: This narrative review summarizes the evidence derived from randomized controlled trials (RCTs) pertaining to the use of adjunctive ultrasonography (US) for neuraxial blocks. EVIDENCE ACQUISITION: The literature search was conducted using the MEDLINE, EMBASE and PUBMED databases. For the MEDLINE and EMBASE searches, the MESH terms "ultrasonography" and key word "ultrasound" were queried; using the operator "and", they were combined with the MESH terms "neuraxial block", "epidural anesthesia", "epidural analgesia", "spinal anesthesia", "spinal analgesia", "intrathecal anesthesia", "intrathecal analgesia", "caudal anesthesia", and "caudal analgesia"...

Post-menopausal metrorrhagias represent a frequent reason for consultation in gynecology. Our study aims to evaluate the contribution of pelvic ultrasonography in the exploration of endocavitary lesions in people experiencing this symptom and to compare the results found with those of hysteroscopy and histology. This was an analytic retrospective study of 33 cases referred for evaluation of postmenopausal metrorrhagias at the department of gynecology and obstetrics «A» in the Center of Maternity and Neonatology of Tunis in 2012...

OBJECTIVE: To screen and detect cortex gyration in fetuses with congenital heart disease (CHD) using Ultrasonography (US) during routine obstetric scans. METHODS: The depth of the Sylvian fissure (SF), parieto-occipital fissure (POF), and calcarine (CF) fissure were prospectively serially measured and compared in 45 fetuses with CHD and 45 normal fetuses. Cardiac hemodynamic parameters, including aortic valve diameter (AV), pulmonary valve diameter (PV), velocity time integral of the aortic valve (VTIav), and velocity time integral of the pulmonary valve (VTIpv), were recorded...

We performed an evidence-based review of the obstetrical management of gastroschisis. Gastroschisis is an abdominal wall defect, which has increased in frequency in recent decades. There is variation of prevalence by ethnicity and several known maternal risk factors. Herniated intestinal loops lacking a covering membrane can be identified with prenatal ultrasonography, and maternal serum α-fetoprotein level is commonly elevated. Because of the increased risk for growth restriction, amniotic fluid abnormalities, and fetal demise, antenatal testing is generally recommended...

Postpartum haemorrhage (PPH) is a potential cause of maternal mortality, and obstetricians must be prepared to rapidly diagnose and treat this condition. Optimal treatment is dependent upon the underlying cause of haemorrhage. Ultrasonography is the most helpful tool for prompt diagnosis of PPH aetiology and obstetricians must have a strong understanding of postpartum ultrasonography. In our previous report, we demonstrated the utility of ultrasonography using the focused assessment with sonography for obstetrics (FASO) technique (a modified version of FAST) as the primary postpartum obstetric survey...

OBJECTIVE: Prenatal diagnosis of complex laparoschisis is difficult and yet it is associated with a significantly increased morbidity and mortality. The aim of the study was to define ultrasonographic factor and obstetrical criteria to predicting adverse neonatal outcome. METHODS: Retrospective cohort study over 10 years, of 35 gastroschisis cases in CHU of Reims (France). The primary outcome was the neonatal death due to gastroschisis. The sonographic markers was bowel dilatation intra- or extra-abdominale, amniotic fluid, intra-uterin growth...

INTRODUCTION: Antenatal hydronephrosis (ANH) is frequently detected on screening obstetric ultrasonography. Common ANH grading systems include the anterior-posterior diameter (APD) and the Society for Fetal Urology (SFU) grading system. Recent developments in the management of ANH include the use of fetal magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), and a new grading system - Urinary Tract Dilation (UTD). This study reviewed patients who underwent fetal MRI and ultrasound, and compared the grading systems across these imaging modalities...

Point-of-care ultrasonography (POCUS) is a useful imaging technique for the emergency medicine (EM) physician. Because of its growing use in EM, this article will summarize the historical development, the scope of practice, and some evidence supporting the current applications of POCUS in the adult emergency department. Bedside ultrasonography in the emergency department shares clinical applications with critical care ultrasonography, including goal-directed echocardiography, echocardiography during cardiac arrest, thoracic ultrasonography, evaluation for deep vein thrombosis and pulmonary embolism, screening abdominal ultrasonography, ultrasonography in trauma, and guidance of procedures with ultrasonography...

OBJECTIVE: To examine potential associations between the presence of fibroids and obstetric outcomes in twin pregnancies. METHODS: A prospective cohort study compared obstetric outcomes between individuals with twin pregnancies who did and did not have fibroids. OBJECTIVE: To assess the feasibility of ultrasonographic task shifting by estimating the accuracy at which primary-level health care workers can perform community-based third-trimester ultrasound diagnosis for selected obstetric risk factors in rural Nepal. METHODS: Three auxiliary nurse-midwives received two 1-week ultrasound trainings at Tribhuvan University Teaching Hospital in Kathmandu. At a study site in rural Nepal, pregnant women who were 32 weeks of gestation or greater were enrolled and received ultrasound examinations from the auxiliary nurse-midwives during home visits...
