Massive weight loss following bariatric surgery is often accompanied by functional impairments due to the resulting excess skin and soft tissues. To achieve both functional reconstruction and restoration of the body silhouette, it is imperative to undergo body contouring surgery involving the strategic transposition of tissues. Several surgical techniques are available for the affected body regions and their application for treatment is determined by the unique circumstances specific to each patient. When conducted by skilled practitioners, postbariatric body reconstruction can be executed safely, leading to outcomes that are both functionally and esthetically satisfying, ultimately contributing to an enhanced quality of life for patients...

BACKGROUND: Influenza virus infections represent a major global health problem. The dynamin-like GTPase MX1 is an interferon-dependent antiviral host protein that confers resistance to influenza virus infections. Infection models in mice are an important experimental system to understand the host response and susceptibility to developing severe disease following influenza infections. However, almost all laboratory mouse strains carry a non-functional Mx1 gene whereas humans have a functional MX1 gene...

The massive production of food waste and plastic pollution necessitates innovative solutions. This study reports the first fabrication of a flexible chitosan (CH) film reinforced with lignosulfonate (LS) derived from pulping byproduct as a sustainable alternative to synthetic food packaging. The CH/LS composite film was prepared by a simple casting method with varying LS contents of 1 % and 2 %. Compared to CH film, the addition of 2 % LS increased the tensile strength by over 4 times and decreased water vapor permeability by 11 %...

BACKGROUND: Body contouring surgery after massive weight loss has emerged a safe and reliable option to improve self-esteem, social life, work ability, physical activity, and sexual activity, and it is considered as an essential step in the multidisciplinary approach to morbid obesity. In this study, we aim to provide a comprehensive overview of the current state of literature on body contouring after massive weight loss, identifying research trends and areas for future investigation...

INTRODUCTION: Weight loss after bariatric surgery causes very important modifications to the patient's silhouette. Abdominal fat and skin excess reduction are associated with several complications. The most frequent are seroma and hematoma whereas major complications, such as pulmonary embolism, are less frequent. This study aimed to describe our technical procedure for abdominoplasty in patients with massive weight loss after bariatric surgery. METHODS: In total, 196 patients were included...

Fibroblast growth factor 21 (FGF21) reduces body weight, which was attributed to induced energy expenditure (EE). Conflicting data have been published on the role of uncoupling protein 1 (UCP1) in this effect. Therefore, we aimed to revisit the thermoregulatory effects of FGF21 and their implications for body weight regulation. We found that an 8-day treatment with FGF21 lowers body weight to similar extent in both wild-type (WT) and UCP1-deficient (KO) mice fed high-fat diet. In WT mice, this effect is solely due to increased EE, which is associated with a strong activation of UCP1, so excess heat must be dissipated through the tail...

Chronic pulmonary aspergillosis (CPA) often manifests in patients with a history of pulmonary tuberculosis and is typically characterized by recurrent hemoptysis, weight loss, and frequently coexists with poorly controlled diabetes. While weight gain is acknowledged as a valuable clinical marker for monitoring therapeutic responses in CPA, there is a scarcity of case reports exploring this aspect. Furthermore, the impact of stringent blood sugar management in diminishing CPA activity and preventing the recurrence of hemoptysis is also underreported...

BACKGROUND: Changes in the skin structure, including the collagen and elastin content, have been reported with massive weight loss (MWL) following bariatric metabolic surgery (BMS) and have been correlated to a higher risk of complications after body-contouring surgery (BCS). This study aimed at comparing the histological characteristics of the skin of patients having surgical MWL (SMWL) post-BMS to those with non-surgical massive weight loss (NSMWL). METHODS: This prospective study compared the epidermal thickness, and collagen and elastin fibers content in 80 skin biopsies obtained from BCS procedures performed to patients who experienced MWL defined more than 50% of excess weight loss (%EWL) either SMWL (40 biopsies) or NSMWL (40 biopsies)...

Malrotation leading to massive chylous ascites is rare. A 9-year-old girl was investigated for slowly increasing abdominal distension under a year. She had no vomiting, weight loss, or pain, but was bothered in social situations. Medical investigations, including ultrasound and computed tomography scans, revealed massive ascites. Laparocentesis yielded milk-colored fluid, confirmed as lymph through laboratory analysis. A complete blood count, liver function and hematologic parameters, chyle cytology, bacterial cultures, and polymerase chain reaction for tuberculosis were all within normal limits...

LC-MS serves as a workhorse for chemical profile characterization of Chinese medicinal materials (CMMs) attributing to the ability of measuring fruitful MS/MS spectral information. However, it is laborious to extract the information belonging to the compounds-of-interest from the massive data matrixes even employing those well-defined post-acquisition data processing strategies. Here, efforts were devoted to propose an integrated strategy allowing rapid chemical homologs-focused data filtering through integrating the fit-for-purpose existing strategies, such as molecular weight imprinting (MWI), diagnostic fragment ion filtering (DFIF), neutral loss filtering (NLF), and isotope pattern filtering (IPF)...

BACKGROUND: The obesity pandemic in Saudi Arabia has led to a high demand for bariatric surgery (BS). Post-BS patients experience rapid and massive weight loss, with most patients experiencing redundant skin, leading to a desire for body contouring surgery (BCS). METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted from September 2022 to May 2023 among patients who underwent BS in Saudi Arabia, using an online self-administered questionnaire. The questionnaire comprised sociodemographic data, weight, and BS-related questions, and the post-BS appearance questionnaire assessed the desire for BCS, excess skin satisfaction, and overall appearance...

The metabolic benefits of GLP-1 receptor (GLP-1R) agonists on glycemic and weight control are well established as therapy for type 2 diabetes and obesity. Glucagon's ability to increase energy expenditure is well described, and the combination of these mechanisms-of-actions has the potential to further lower hepatic steatosis in metabolic disorders and could therefore be attractive for the treatment for non-alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH). Here, we have investigated the effects of a dual GLP-1/glucagon receptor agonist NN1177 on hepatic steatosis, fibrosis, and inflammation in a preclinical mouse model of NASH...

Achalasia is one of the most common esophageal motility disorders. Typical symptoms include dysphagia, food regurgitation, respiratory symptoms, chest pain, and weight loss. Respiratory obstruction due to tracheal compression by the massively dilated esophagus is a very rare but fatal complication. A 36-year-old male presented with progressive respiratory distress with a history of untreated dysphagia and regurgitation. Further diagnosis revealed dilatation of the esophagus with undigested food. A Heller myotomy with fundoplication was performed and respiratory symptoms were relieved...

von Willebrand disease (vWD) is an inherited bleeding disorder that is characterized by a quantitative or qualitative deficiency of the von Willebrand factor (vWF). Type 3 is the most severe form of vWD with a near-complete absence of vWF and a significantly increased risk of excessive bleeding and hematoma during a surgical procedure. To date, no data on surgical and hemostatic management of a type 3 vWD patient undergoing body-contouring surgery has been published. We report the case of a 47-year-old woman with type 3 vWD requiring medically indicated abdominoplasty after massive weight loss due to bariatric surgery...
