BACKGROUND: Esophagogastroduodenoscopy (EGDS) is the gold standard exam for upper gastrointestinal diseases. EGDS is very important in Early Gastric Cancer diagnosis and treatment but it is an operator-dependent exam and there are lots of factors that reduce its visibility (mucus, bubbles and foam). AIM: The aim of our study is to evaluate if the use of Lumevis™ improves mucosa visualization during EGDS without increasing the examination time and complications' rate and comparing the differences in patients prepared with water or no intervention...

Nonsmall cell lung cancer (NSCLC) represents an important cause of mortality worldwide due to its aggressiveness and growing resistance to currently available therapy. Cucurbitacins have emerged as novel potential anticancer agents showing strong antiproliferative effects and can be promising candidates for combined treatments with clinically used anticancer agents. This study investigates the synergistic antiproliferative effects of a new semisynthetic derivative of cucurbitacin B (DACE) with three chemotherapy drugs: cisplatin (CIS), irinotecan (IRI), and paclitaxel (PAC) on A549 cells...

Several metabolic diseases present a high cardiovascular mortality due to endothelial dysfunction consequences. In the last years of the past century, it has come to light that the endothelial cells, previously considered as inert in what regards an eventual secretion activity, play a pivotal role in regulating different aspects of the vascular function (endothelial function). It was clearly demonstrated that the endothelium acts as a real active organ, owning endocrine, paracrine and autocrine modulation activities by means of which it is able to regulate the vascular homeostasis...

This work aimed to evaluate the effect of different substances on the permeation of geraniol through bovine hoof membranes. Different penetration enhancers were able to increase the permeability up to 25 times compared to control. It was demonstrated that acetilcysteine in association with ascorbic acid increased the permeation, even in acid formulations. In addition, some antifungal drugs were incorporated into a gel formulation of HPMC containing acetylcysteine 5% and ascorbic acid 0.2% and then the permeation coefficient through bovine hoof membranes was evaluated...

Different nephrotoxic drugs (antibiotic, antifungal, chemotherapeutic, NSAR, cyclosporine) as well as radio contrasts are mainly responsible for impairment of the renal funciton. Some patient populations, like diabetics, older patients and dehydrated patients are in additional risk for kidney failure. The challenge for protection of kidney function is complex, but it is possible in different clinical conditions to influence nephrotoxicity. The prevention of acute renal failure is very important, because this complication is according to many publications a significant risk for mortality...

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Rumack's nomogram is usually used to indicate the treatment with N-acetilcysteine in the paracetamol poisoning, but it has several limitations. Paracetamol half-life elimination (t1/2) is approximately of 2 h with therapeutic doses and it increases to more than 4 h in patients with hepatotoxicity. The aim of this study was to determine the usefulness of estimated paracetamol t1/2 as greater than or inferior to 4 h by using a simple ratio in relation to the development of hepatotoxicity...
