Objective: The importance of hypomethylation in SLE is well recognized; however, the significance of hypermethylation has not been well characterized. We screened hypermethylated marks in SLE and investigated their possible implications. Methods: DNA methylation marks were screened in SLE whole-blood DNA by microarray, and two marks ( CD3Z and VHL hypermethylations) were confirmed by a methylation single-base extension method in two independent ethnic cohorts consisting of 207 SLE patients and 151 controls...

INTRODUCTION: Multiple factors, including proteinuria, antiphospholipid syndrome, thrombocytopenia and hypertension, are predictive of pregnancy loss in systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). In the PROMISSE study of predictors of pregnancy loss, only a battery of lupus anticoagulant tests was predictive of a composite of adverse pregnancy outcomes. We examined the predictive value of one baseline lupus anticoagulant test (dilute Russell viper venom time) with pregnancy loss in women with SLE...

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the etiology and clinical characteristics of pregnancy-emerged thrombocytopenia. METHODS: A retrospective analysis was conducted on clinical data of 159 pregnancies with thrombocytopenia, who were admitted to Peking University People's Hospital from January 2000 to January 2010. All the patients recruited in this study had no history of blood or immune system disease before pregnancy, and thrombocytopenia was the predominate clinical manifestation during pregnancy, with platelet counts less than 100 × 10(9)/L at least twice during pregnancy...

Antiphospholipid syndrome (APS) is a clinical entity characterized by arterial and venous thrombosis, adverse obstetric outcome and the presence of antibodies against phospholipids in serum or plasma. The objective of the present study is to describe a rare case of APS that occurred in a neonate born from a patient previously diagnosed as primary APS. A male, preterm born twin infant, whose mother had been diagnosed as primary APS, developed thrombocytopenia, livedo reticularis, pericardial effusion and thrombosis of the left subclavian and external jugular veins concomitantly with severe respiratory tract infection soon after his delivery, that culminated with his death two months after the birth, in spite of the large spectrum antibiotic therapy and all supportive measures...

OBJECTIVES: Adverse events and positive re-challenge of symptoms reported in the scientific literature and to the Vaccine Adverse Event Reporting System (VAERS) following hepatitis B vaccination (HBV) were examined. METHODS: The VAERS and PubMed (1966-2003) were searched for autoimmune conditions including arthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, myelitis, optic neuritis, multiple sclerosis (MS), Guillain Barré Syndrome (GBS), glomerulonephritis, pancytopenia/thrombocytopenia, fatigue, and chronic fatigue, and Systemic Lupus Erythematous (SLE) following HBV...

We describe a patient with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), whose pregnancy was complicated by fulminant lupus pneumonitis and pericarditis. Maternal disease responded to therapy and twin girls were delivered, both with thrombocytopenia, one of whom died of an intraventricular haemorrhage. Pneumonitis is a rare complication of lupus in pregnancy which may be fatal. We suggest patients with previous severe pneumonitis should have lung function tests at the onset of pregnancy, and treatment be modified to suppress flare if there is any indication of severe pneumonitis in early pregnancy...

OBJECTIVE: Familial associations of the antiphospholipid antibody syndrome (APS) offer the opportunity to study genetic mechanisms of autoantibody production and disease, but are unusual. We identified a family, including identical twins and their mother, in which all members had systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) and presented with different manifestations of the APS. METHODS: Review of case histories and clinical laboratory results, antiphospholipid antibody (aPL) studies, complement C4 protein and gene analysis, and HLA typing of family members were performed...

Marked thrombocytopenia developed during pregnancy in both identical twins mothers who had systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) and also type IIB von Willebrand's disease (vWD). The proband's platelet count decreased in the third trimester of pregnancy. Large-dose gamma-globulin and prednisolone treatments were performed because of the suspicion of immune thrombocytopenic reaction associated with SLE. These treatments were not effective. Her platelet count returned to the normal range immediately after delivery...
