In this study, following a systematic approach, we used aquatic species (bacteria Vibrio fischeri and microalgae Raphidocelis subcapitata) and different human cell lines (Caco-2, HepG2, SV-80 and HaCaT) representing different tissues and exposure pathways, to investigate how two organic stabilizers (PVA and DMSO) used for NMs dispersion influence their physicochemical properties, the persistence of metals in suspension and the toxicity/ecotoxicity of two metallic NMs (nano-Ag and nano-Cu). Although the stabilizers are expected to contribute to improve the dispersion and stability of NMs, the results obtained clearly showed that no similar changes in toxicity and morphological properties of the nano-Ag can be expected after its stabilization with PVA...

Emerging reports suggest microRNAs (miRNAs) play a vital role in the progression of malignant tumors. MiR-30a is downregulated in a variety of cancers and acts as a tumor suppressing gene. However, the molecular mechanisms of miRNA-30a in hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) are still unclear. Hereby, in this study, we detected that miR-30a expression was significantly down-regulated in both HCC tissues compared with adjacent non-cancerous liver tissues, and we also observed that miR-30a expression was lower in HCC cell lines than that of normal controls...

For many years, the impact of hyper- and hypothermia on mammalian cells has been examined. With the exception of short, low temperature storage, which has uses in areas such as preservation for transplantation or regenerative medicine, advantages for the use of low temperature treatment in hepatocytes have not been previously reported. We have observed that alginate-encapsulated HepG2 liver spheroids that are cryopreserved or experience a cold reduction in temperature (≤10°C) for periods between 1 and 90 min display an enhanced cell proliferation during culture 7-16 days post-treatment compared with untreated samples...

Pseudomonas aeruginosa has great intrinsic antimicrobial resistance limiting the number of effective antibiotics. Thus, other antimicrobial agents such as silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) are considered potential agents to help manage and prevent infections. AgNPs can be used in several applications against bacteria resistant to common antibiotics or even multi-resistant bacteria such as P. aeruginosa. This study assessed the antimicrobial activity of commercial 10 nm AgNPs on two hospital strains of P. aeruginosa resistant to a large number of antibiotics and a reference strain from a culture collection...

Prenylated flavonoids have been demonstrated to possess diverse bioactivities including antitumor effects. One new, daphnegiravone D (1), and four known (2-5) prenylated flavonoids were isolated from Daphne giraldii. Their cytotoxic activities revealed that daphnegiravone D markedly inhibited the proliferation of cancer cells, but had no apparent cytotoxicity on human normal cells. Mechanistically, daphnegiravone D induced G0/G1 arrest and apoptosis, reduced the expression of cyclin E1, CDK2 and CDK4, and promoted the cleavage of caspase 3 and PARP in Hep3B and HepG2 cells...
